Never mind found the solution. As per
http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=HowDoISecureTheJMXConnection
the Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL & Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS are propagated.
so adding these to my properties helps:
props.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, username);
props.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS,
passwd);
