For people having this problem: I had success in creating a freestyle project type. When executing that, I saw what was the actual error - out of PermGen memory. Once I could thus identify the issue, I changed the original project to have more memory and the build didn't break anymore.
So it's something in the maven project type that causes the errors not to be displayed in the console.
