 We initially wanted to make them look pretty, but after doing a deep dive with Daniel Beck on the different widgets we decided to be conservative and do the minimum styling, in order to avoid breaking anything

 I'm gonna go ahead and put the checklist of TODO items here: * -Style for hierarchies of nested elements. This includes _hetero lists_ and repeatable elements.- * -Indentation problems caused by the {{.container}} class and the 15px padding it sets. Maybe we should create a new class for forms instead of reusing {{.container}}. This would also work to remove the width changes on this class.- * -Checkbox fixes for the Git plugin & similar (I have a JS based solution for this but it needs a bit more work).- * -{{}} refactor: move the helper text to inside the form entry element.- * -{{}} refactor: move the validation errors to inside the form entry element - not the easiest due to the _javascript_.- * -Verify that form submission (_buildFormTree_) still works properly.- * -Too much spacing on the API key list on the user configuration (easy).- * -Broken scroll-aware headers on the job configuration (this one is medium at best, difficult if we need to do lots of fixing for the JS tests).- * -⚠️ Broken drag & drop of repetable elements-Pending: * Forms are IMO too wide. I'd suggest adding a max-width for inputs but maybe it is out of scope for this. * Fix offset Tune styling of _ nesting indicator * Provide backwards compatibility for {{findFollowingTR(e, "validation-error-area")}} . Used directly in many plugins ([https://github.com/search?q=org%3Ajenkinsci+ validation-error- area_ area=Code])

Checkbox fixes for the Git plugin & similar (I have a JS based solution for this but it needs a bit more work).
 refactor: move the helper text to inside the form entry element.
 refactor: move the validation errors to inside the form entry element - not the easiest due to the _javascript_.
Verify that form submission (buildFormTree) still works properly.
Too much spacing on the API key list on the user configuration (easy).
Broken scroll-aware headers on the job configuration (this one is medium at best, difficult if we need to do lots of fixing for the JS tests).
⚠️ Broken drag & drop of repetable elements
 Pending:

Forms are IMO too wide. I'd suggest adding a max-width for inputs but maybe it is out of scope for this.

 Creating this issue on Core because I think the solution should be here. The buttons on the modal when clicking "Help us localize this page" look wrong. This has been introduced with the button changes on 2.233. The solution I suggest is modifying the YUI CSS that removes references to the buttons in order to override it.

 This was caused because the YUI skin.css file is no longer used: https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/commit/d1cd03f48103f5624790b15335eaf6ac04fdb6ad#diff-d00c6bc3369be9674b400c1a8163acb6 I wouldn't want to restore the whole file because it will mess up the button styles a lot. Also, restoring just the following code fixes the issue:

.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac {
  position: relative;
  font-family: arial;
  font-size: 100%;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-input {
  position: absolute;
  width: 100%;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-container {
  position: absolute;
  top: 1.6em;
  width: 100%;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-content {
  position: absolute;
  width: 100%;
  border: 1px solid #808080;
  background: #fff;
  overflow: hidden;
  z-index: 9050;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-shadow {
  position: absolute;
  margin: 0.3em;
  width: 100%;
  background: #000;
  -moz-opacity: 0.1;
  opacity: 0.1;
  filter: alpha(opacity=10);
  z-index: 9049;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac iframe {
  opacity: 0;
  filter: alpha(opacity=0);
  padding-right: 0.3em;
  padding-bottom: 0.3em;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-content ul {
  margin: 0;
  padding: 0;
  width: 100%;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-content li {
  margin: 0;
  padding: 2px 5px;
  cursor: default;
  white-space: nowrap;
  list-style: none;
  zoom: 1;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-content li.yui-ac-prehighlight {
  background: #b3d4ff;
}
.yui-skin-sam .yui-ac-content li.yui-ac-highlight {
  background: #426fd9;
  color: #fff;
}

 I'll be creating a patch.

 I did some testing on a 2.204 image and found out this:It seems that the margin was being set as inline styles, and not anymore. I'd suggest creating a css class for this and add it on the pluginSetupWizard.less file.

[JIRA] (JENKINS-61480) Dark Theme

  Re: Dark Theme

 I don't know how well would that play on normal UI development. I think it would be a bit of an annoyance to need to always remember the dark mode. My ideal solution would be to use CSS variables that a dark theme could override. Example:

// Jenkins core stylesheet
:root {
--body-background: #fefefe;
}

body {
background-color: var(--body-background);
}

// On the dark theme stylesheet
:root {
--body-background: #000;
}

 I think it's the only way to make it so that the changes will scale. It still has coupling problems, as the CSS variables would then become an API that plugin stylesheets could use. It also needs some deep refactors and changes to happen, but no lesser than having to add a dark comment to all styleshets.

 AFAIK ui-theme is unmaintained, only simple-theme is active. I'm not really sure what your goal with modifying all css files is, is it at runtime? still looks really intense and brittle (changes on the main css would always break the dark mode)

 TBH I don't think scanning and substituting existing files will scale well, and it may not be ressilient to changes. I agree with Oleg Nenashev that a better alternative would be to use a custom theme using the simple-theme-plugin. You can take inspiration on the material or neo2 themes. In the medium/long term I would like to have the UI themable using CSS variables, but we lack infrastructure at the moment for that.

 There's an open PR that handles this: https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/pull/3895. For context, labels above input elements and to the right of boolean elements is pretty standard. Bootstrap, which follows rather standards UI patterns, implements them like this: https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.4/components/forms/#overview

 Introduced in 2.217+ I believe. There is no spacing between form errors on the setup wizard, as shown in the picture: There should be at least 0.5rem of spacing between them.

 If you work with bootstrap alerts, it's better if you don't bring the library in, just bring the code you need.

  Re: update notice odd spacing before closing parenthesis

 The issue comes from the fact that the HTML code for the monitors popup is located within the header and the .page-headerhyperlinks div. I already needed to make a hack so that the header styles would not apply here (https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/blob/144550b2fc4ef59ce1af0abe4dace9e4fe394c89/core/src/main/resources/jenkins/management/AdministrativeMonitorsDecorator/resources.css#L92). A solution would come from resetting the margin there as well.

  Re: Rename the root breadcrumb

 Something like that indeed. My OG idea was to to have on the Java side 2 models:

Breadcrumbs: has the logic to build the whole breadcrumb trail (maybe a getBreadcrumbItems method) and hooked into the jelly view. It would also allow prepending and appending breadcrumbs, and renaming the first one (??)
BreadcrumbItem: has logic to determine if it's the last one, get the parent, check if it has a contextual menu, etc.
 Then on the jelly side you would get the breadcrumb model and iterate on the breadcrumb items

  Re: Rename the root breadcrumb

 It would be great if you can work on this one! TBH there's no good support for breadcrumbs atm in Jenkins. They are just generated iterating through request ancestors, something that I guess is provided by Stapler (https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/blob/07c48b03fb4c651e7314e7adbe3a0ef0fe249586/core/src/main/resources/lib/layout/breadcrumbBar.jelly#L44). A hacky way to do it that comes to mind could be to check if the ancestor points to the rootURL, then it could be replaced. That said, I'd favour using some Java code to do this. If we get a Breadcrumbs module going on, then we can expand it in the future with some utilities like:

Get the last breadcrumb item.
Check if a breadcrumb item is the current one (good for styling purposes).
Prepend/append items to the breadcrumbs.

 It would make sense to revisit the banner. Can someone add it to the https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/browse/JENKINS-60919 epic and mark this as an improvement? We can triage it on the SIG meeting. *Edit:* nevermind, I did that

[JIRA] (JENKINS-61429) Unable to move/reorder steps within a job

  Re: Unable to move/reorder steps within a job

 I have a better idea of what caused this regression. I’ll try to explain it. The war/src/main/js/config-scrollspy.js JS entry point contains some fixes for drag & drop behaviour for the job and folders form forms. Fixes are applied on a proxied Behaviour.specify call on the tabbar.js file it imports. These fixes are initialized by a function wrapped within a $() jquery block .(https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/blob/23ab517cb4de3edd80e07b77d332d47eb9049276/war/src/main/js/config-scrollspy.js#L29). Before 2.217, the code would run in the following order:

config-scrollspy.js loads and it’s executed.
The initialization code runs immediatly and the Behaviour.specify call registers the fixes (https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/blob/1ca9f6e8d649be88adb364da5dc2533706a8bfa5/war/src/main/js/widgets/config/tabbar.js#L13)
The window.onload event handler is triggered, and runs all pieces of code set up via Behaviour.specify
 On 2.217+:

config-scrollspy.js loads and it’s script-level code is executed, but the initialization code does not run.
The window.onload event handler is triggered, and runs all pieces of code set up via Behaviour.specify. Because the intialization code was not yet run on the config-scrollspy.js file, drag & drop widgets existing on the page are not initialized.
The initialization code for the drag & drop fixes is run. Because it came after the _window.onload _event, it will only apply to draggable widgets added after this point (i.e. recently added and unsaved steps).
 Basically, jQuery will wait until window.onload event to run the subscription code on 2.217+. The fix consists on moving the Behaviour.specify call on the tabbar.js file to be run when the script loads, so that it happens before the window.onload event. I don’t think it will negatively impact any other part of the app / plugin.

 You're right. I'm still having trouble thinking of a good solution. Leaving the icon on at all times may give the impression that it's a purely dropdown button, not a link. It would also affect uses across the whole application. The downside with just making it bigger is that it would cause a rather big empty space next to the breadcrumb link. Cannot think of a good solution for this tbh

 Did you have the chance to take a look at https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/browse/JENKINS-60972 ? It may be at odds with this one. I think having just that item be a dropdown can be a bit inconsistent. BTW, I think this is an improvement not a bug. AFAIK this behaviour is intended and has been present since forever.

 On the setup wizard there will only be type updates, no font sizes. This is due to the fact that changing the font sizes would probably cause the layout to break.

 The font-family used:

-apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Noto Sans", Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Fira Sans", "Droid Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Arial, sans-serif, "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol"

 This makes use of available system faults, defaulting to sans-serif in the end.

 Add the PostCSS pre-processor ([https://postcss.org/]) to improve the generated CSS bundles with features like .h3.Plugins needed:- Autoprefixer (https://github.com/postcss/ autoprefixer or REM fallbacks )h4 . Possible candidatesSome research is needed to determine if the following plugins are useful:- Flexbugs fixes(https://github.com/luisrudge/postcss-flexbugs-fixes)The most straightforward way to go is to apply it the `webpack.config.js` file located under the `war` module

[JIRA] (JENKINS-60972) Rename the root breadcrumb

 One of the items discussed on the UX SIG meetings ([https://jenkins.io/sigs/ux/]) was renaming the root breadcrumb to _"Home"_. The reason for this is that it can be confusing having Jenkins in 2 consecutive lines. An example of how it could look:!rootbreadcrumb.png! The solution probably should take into account i18n capabilities.

 I sort of agree with you. I think having a good, meaningful label would be better. On the other side, having a bad label is even worse. I'll be happy to create a patch to remove this if more people agree that it should be done.

 The method JenkinsRule#assertAllImageLoadSuccessfully tries to download all images provided by ``  tags. It does so by reading the height of the image. It throws an exception when trying to load SVG images on tags like ``, because SVGs cannot be read by a buffered reader.

 One of the items discussed on the UX SIG meetings (https://jenkins.io/sigs/ux/) was renaming the root breadcrumb to "Home". The reason for this is that it can be confusing having Jenkins in 2 consecutive lines.   An example of how it could look:

  Re: Update the Header and Breadcrumb styles

 Some technical considerations:

Started using material icons as SVG sprites using the  tag.

Icons are taking from the symbol files on the material repo (https://github.com/google/material-design-icons/tree/master/sprites/svg-sprite). Currently only the action and social sprites are included and used.
Added the svgxuse JS library to polyfill svg sprites on IE 11. It does not block rendering but causes a Flash Of No Icons on IE 11.

Use the [BEM|http://getbem.com/] methodology to namespace the CSS when possible.

Do a visual revamp of the Admin monitor and warnings.
If possible, remove bootstrap from the /manage page and only use it on the setup wizard.
