Title: Message Title Tim Jaacks commented on JENKINS-26612 Re: svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW Thank you very much for your effort, Manuel Jesús Recena Soto. With the new release 2.5.5, my checkout times are back to normal (13 GB in 55 minutes). It's not as fast as with 2.4.5 (41 minutes), but at least it is usable again, compared to version 2.5 (10.5 hours). Thanks a thousand times! For me this ticket may be resolved as fixed. Title: Message Title Tim Jaacks commented on JENKINS-26612 Re: svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW Well, maybe it does not make sense for YOU, but we actually need this. How can you know what makes sense for me? The 13 GB is a complete Android AOSP source tree, and we need nightly builds on this since a complete build takes 1 hour. If this is increased by 10 hours due to the long checkout time (for EACH job, we have multiple of those), we cannot work with it anymore. Title: Message Title Steven Christou commented on JENKINS-26612 Re: svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW The problem is not specific to the subversion plugin, but the svnkit library (https://issues.tmatesoft.com/issue/SVNKIT-553). I did a lot of profiling for this issue. The issue is that for each file that is committed there are several sql query operations being done in SVNCancellableEditor.closeFile. Performing a "closeFile" operation create 3 sql queries against the sqljet engine this I believe causes the performance issue. I'm not sure if this is specific to how large the repository is vs the number of files/folders that exist in the repository, but it's easily reproducible if you perform a checkout of a repository that's over several MB large, and contains a lot of files/folders. Maybe that'll help? Note that memory issues can be investigated by using JDK specific tools such as jmap which you could try using. It's possible that Java just grabbed the memory one and doesn't return it until another process needs it, but you provide no information to help investigate further. I'd even prefer if jenkins allowed me to run my script regularly and the script would return status if jenkins should start a build job or not. Something like that. Tim Jaacks commented on JENKINS-26612 svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW I can confirm this behaviour using Jenkins 1.580.3 on Ubuntu LTS 14.04. We have a quite large SVN repository here (~13 GB), which normally checks out in ~40 Minutes (natively on the Linux command line as well as via Jenkins). After upgrading the subversion-plugin in Jenkins, the checkout time increased to 10 1/2 hours. That is nearly 16 times slower. It makes no difference whether Jenkins is configured to use SVN 1.7 or 1.8. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. [JIRA] [subversion-plugin] (JENKINS-26612) svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW
Steven Christou commented on JENKINS-26612 svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW Could you take several thread dumps while the checkout is happening (kill -3 $PID, or jstack $PID)? This would help with debugging and understanding where some slow points are happening, and any places in the code threads are stuck at. While doing initial testing before I released I was able to perform checkouts (svn 1.8) with speeds with little (to sometime no) difference than through command line. I will look into setting up an environment to perform svn checkouts with several GB. Pablob P I have tried to make several attempts at using a native api (javahl, svnkit + native libraries, etc.), however I do not believe they are safe to use. Debugging issues increases the complexity because each native library has a different libsvn implementation (default *nix libsvn libraries, vendor libsvn implementations, etc). SVNKIT offers a pure java implementation which is easier to debug. Another issue is we would need to be careful and make sure to guard against native code potentially crashing the JVM. We could try something similar to what the git plugin does (define the svn executable or pick svnkit), but that would require a major rework. Pablob P I understand your frustration, but please do not use bad language. I am really sorry about the issue you are experiencing, and I am making efforts to resolve any performance issues users are experiencing. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. [JIRA] [subversion-plugin] (JENKINS-26612) svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW
Pablob P created JENKINS-26612 svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW Issue Type: Bug Assignee: Unassigned Components: subversion-plugin Created: 26/Jan/15 5:28 PM Description: I have no clue how broken svn plugin is, but it takes way to much to do svn update on my svn repo. Looks like it uses something else (e.g. svn client implementation made in pure java?!) instead of real svn-client. My svn repo is 4GB, 76,220 Files, 4,371 Folders. If I simply cd into the top dir and do svn update from command prompt it takes 7 seconds. When jenkins runs the svn update it takes a few minutes (I didn't even try to measure, but every time I take a look the console progress is stuck on "Updating ... step". Please provide a way to make it use normal svn-client instead, otherwise it's just unusable that way. For the same reason I actually had to use simple update option, update and revert was exceptionally ass proken option that I think was taking like half an hour to complete. I had to write my own batch script that makes the build and I do svn revert -R manually from my own build script instead. steve rathmann commented on JENKINS-26612 svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW We noticed a substantial slowdown when updating from 2.4.5 to 2.5. Our repo is about 12 GB and when moving from 2.4.5 to 2.5 full checkout times more than doubled on Window and more than tripled on OSX. Reverting back to 2.4.5 restored the previous checkout times. Pablob P commented on JENKINS-26612 svn: absolutely unacceptably SLOW Is it possible to use regular svn client binaries directly? Maybe there is an alternative svn plugin for jenkins that uses installed svn-client? This message is automatically generated by JIRA.
