Re: [Jmol-users] Is there a simple way to create an ellipse?

2007-03-07 Thread Dean Johnston
I don't know any "standard", but I guess at minimum you would need a center
point, a second point that defines a perpendicular axis, and two axis
lengths (major and minor axes). I don't know that we need another way to
define a plane, but the same info could be used for both planes and
ellipses.

I think you could eliminate one of the axes lengths by giving an
eccentricity similar to the ellipsoid. The scale of the ellipse would then
be proportional to the length of the perpendicular vector.

Hmm, maybe I am getting Jmol-users messages again. Though I didn't get
the original of this.

The problem with flat ellipsoids -- that is (I think), ellipsoids that
have three different perpendicular
axes lengths -- is in defining the orientation of the second two axes.
What is the reference point?
I couldn't figure out how to do that, or what was a "standard" way of
doing it, so I left that out.

As soon as someone tells me how to do it, I will do it.

That doesn't really work because isn't a flat ellipsoid (large
eccentricity) just a circle? And you can't really get it totally "flat".

Can you do this with the draw command? All I can get is lines (two
points), triangles (three points), and four-sided figures. It seems to
ignore any points beyond four. I guess I could create an inline pmesh, but
that definitely is not easy...

A flat ellipsoid?
I wouldn't call that easy, but...

You can also create a polygon with as many vertices as you are
willing to calculate.

[Jmol-users] Is there a simple way to create an ellipse?

2007-03-06 Thread Dean Johnston
Jmol users,

I¹d like to create a representation of a plane that is an ellipse rather
than a rectangle. Is there a simple way to create a representation of an
ellipse in Jmol? Thanks for any pointers / suggestions.
