[JOYnet] Saint of the Day

2002-12-01 Thread jose joseph
December 01, 2002

Saint of the Day : St. Eligius
  (Patron of metalworkers)

Eligius (also known as Eloi) was born around 590 near
Limoges in France. He became an extremely skillful
metalsmith and was appointed master of the mint under
King Clotaire II of Paris. Eligius developed a close
friendship with the King and his reputation as an
outstanding metalsmith became widespread. With his
fame came fortune. Eligius was very generous to the
poor, ransomed many slaves, and built several churches
and a monastery at Solignac. He also erected a major
convent in Paris with property he received from
Clotaire's son, King Dagobert I. In 629, Eligius was
appointed Dagobert's first counselor. Later, on a
mission for Dagobert, he persuaded the Breton King
Judicael, to accept the authority of Dagobert. Eligius
later fulfilled his desire to serve God as a priest,
after being ordained in 640. Then he was made bishop
of Noyon and Tournai. His apostolic zeal led him to
preach in Flanders, especially Antwerp, Ghent, and
Courtai where he made many converts. Eligius died on
December 1, around 660, at Noyon. He is the patron of
metalworkers and his feast day is December 1. The use
of one's talents and wealth for the welfare of
humanity is a very true reflection of the image of
God. In the case of St. Eligius, he was so well liked
that he attracted many to Christ. His example should
encourage us to be generous in spirit and kind and
happy in demeanor.

The 7 Ups

1. Wake Up !!
Decide to have a good day.
This is the day the Lord hath made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalms 118:24

2. Dress Up !!
The best way to dress up is to put on a smile.
A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.
I Samuel 16:7

3. Shut Up!!
Say nice things and learn to listen.
God gave us two ears and one mouth,
so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking.
He who guards his lips guards his soul.
Proverbs 13:3

4. Stand Up!!
. . . for what you believe in.
Stand for something or you will fall for anything.
Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time,
we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good...
Galatians 6:9-10

5. Look Up !!
. . . to the Lord.
I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13

6. Reach Up !!
. . . for something higher.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not unto your own understanding.
In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.
Proverbs 3:5-6

7. Lift Up !!
. . . your Prayers.
Do not worry about anything; instead
PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING.
Philippians 4:6

A POSITIVE THOUGHT
If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.
He sends you flowers every spring, and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen.
He could live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.
What about the Christmas gift He sent you in Bethlehem;
not to mention that Friday at Calvary.
Face it, He's crazy about you.

Send this to the people you care about.
I thought this was mighty special, just like you.
Pass this on and brighten someone's day, and remember . . .

[JOYnet] ADVENT - TIME OF GRACE

2002-12-01 Thread FR. THOMAS THARAYIL
Dear friends,
Today we begin the new liturgical year, with the season of Advent. I just would
like to share a few thoughts. What is it, after all, year after year we keep this
season? So much so, it has become a mere routine]]] Just as we begin this season we
know that Christmas is coming, and we begin the preparations (external, this worldly)
for it. But how much do we concentrate on the time of Advent itself??
BE ALERT (WATCHFUL)
---
If we pay close attention to the liturgical celebrations of this season, we
can find a very peculiar reality. For the past few weeks the Church had been asking us
to think about 'the end' (Parousia - the second coming of Our Lord), and prepare for
it. There the importance was for repentance and renewal of life so that we would be
found worthy to receive the Lord. Ironically, the message for this season of Advent
also is the same : 'be watchful and alert' for the Lord is coming. That is why we pray
in this season come Lord Jesus, come.
We are a people who live in between two comings of the Lord: the first coming
at Christmas (to save) and the second at the end (to judge). So the important message
of this season of Advent is be alert, and watchful for the Lord who comes. But when,
where and how does He come?
Though we are absolutely uncertain (Mk.13:32) of the hour of His coming, we are
so absolutely certain of the fact of His coming. That is mostly applicable to the
second coming of the Lord. But taken in the context of Advent, when does the Lord come
to us? every day / every moment of our life. Only thing is that we have to identify
Him in the little day to day events of our life.
Where does He come? At our home, our schools, colleges, workplace, marketplace,
business, on the bus / train, in the slum, in the prayer group, in the parish church,
in the hospital - rather everywhere where there are human beings, He comes to us. Only
thing is that we should recognize Him.
How does he come? He may come as a friend, a teacher, a coworker, a superior,
a beggar, a homeless person, a sick person, a hungry person, a lonely person, an
enemy, a traitor, a helper, etc, etc,. He also may come through the word of God, the
sacraments, the prayers, the fellowships, the services that we give and receive, the
sharing in the family, the reaching out to the needy etc,. Only thing is that we
should accept Him. Do not forget, BE ALERT AND WATCHFUL.
POLITICALLY CORRECT
---
These days people have a tendency to be politically correct in this season,
even in greeting one another. A famous news channel was discussing how to make the
greeting for the season 'politically correct', in order not to offend anybody. So they
wanted to find out something to substitute happy Christmas, because it contains
Christmas which has Christ in it]. How ridiculous, isn't it?? But that is the
world in which we live. But let us not forget that Christ is 'THE reason for this
season'. Let us not avoid Christ from Christmas. Be bold enough to wish everyone the
peace and joy that ONLY CHRIST can give. Again BE ALERT, AND WATCHFUL.
Wishing a very Fruitful Advent,
Fr. Thomas Tharayil

[JOYnet] Jesus youth in Malaysia - Our first prayer meeting was today !!!

2002-12-01 Thread Saju PJ
Hai Friends,

Yesterday, I slipped down and got a fracture on my left wrist, and so I was a bit
disappointed. But today is the happiest day for me in Malaysia. Our first Jesus Youth
prayer meeting took place here today with three persons!

Two friends- Michael from Nagarkovil, Tamilnadu Biju from Kanjirappally, Kerala -
whom I had met in the church, came to visit me. We have been desiring for a JY group
for the last few weeks. Today when they came here, we just talked for a while (some
“kochu varthamanam”) and then said to each other – “Let’s pray for a while” it
happened just like a typical Jesus Youth prayer meeting, except that we could not sing
any hymns since we didn’t want to disturb others. But Lord guided us through Praise
worship, Reading the Word of God and Intercession. Most importantly, Jesus has made
our desire more strong, to ‘canvass’ many others to Jesus youth, so that they too will
taste this joy. We are hopeful of getting some more friends, whom we met in the church
and somebody else who are working nearby. Also, hope that Jaison George in Kualalampur
also will be able to find some time, though he is under very much work pressure.

Hope, you remember my previous prayer request for a JY group getting evolved here in
Malaysia. I am sure many of you were praying for this intension. I feel our loving
Lord has started answering our prayers.

Also, our JY friends in Singapore (Eddy chettan also was with them) prayed for me
yesterday. Lord heard the prayer and He helped me to accept the pain, and has filled
me with inner joy and all positive thoughts. Yes, now I am sure, this will be a
turning point in my life since I will be getting enough time to be with God, and read
The Word, and to be in touch with others through phone or mail. Please pray that my
rest days (medical leave until 17th Decemer ) be a nice preparation period for
Christmas, for me. I am really happy that this 17 days “retreat” starts today, on 1st
December, the stating day of Advent. And another beautiful coincidence is that my
birthday falls on 15th. Decmber. I promise to you and to our Lord that, this will be a
transformation period in my life - from a “Pathetic sinner” into a “Saint in
training”, as all JYs are called to be saints. Please pray that it come true.

Dexon is planning to come here from Singapore, on Tuesday. Jesus has been utilizing
him, for the last one and a half years as a powerful instrument in Singapore, in
evolving a strong network of Jesus Youth there. Please pray that Lord will do the same
thing here too. Also, I hope, we will get Santhosh Chettan in this week end to guide
us. Also, Santhosh Chettan has introduced Dr.Xavier in Kualalampur for giving us
constant guidance and support. (During his study in Bangalore , Dr.Xavier was active
in the prayer group there and now in the Charismatic movement here too). Let’s thank
Jesus for His plans.

Once again, I am asking your prayers for the growth of Jesus Youth in Malaysia.

With love and prayers,

Saju P.J

[JOYnet] AIDS Day and Safe Sex ?

2002-12-01 Thread abbyabraham
Clear Day
Dear JYs,

Today seems to tell us that AIDS is the largest epidemic that is catching up
with the youth and the seniors . Why is the media harping only on 'safe sex'
and not writing on the 'true sex'? Aren't the people still thinking that we
can fool God by the so called 'safe sex' ? I don't think God ever thought of
the so called 'safe sex' when He crated the whole idea of sex at all !! The
fight against AIDS is all useless unless people become holy and lead an
upright life. Isn't it?

It is time that the people treat their body as a living temple of God's
Grace. Halleluiah !!

[JOYnet] Teach me to forgive

2002-12-01 Thread lyann dandge
Dear friends,

surely this advent teaches us to be alert and watchfull which means be alert
with repentance and forgiveness and watchfull for the lord who speaks to us
at every moment.

   Teach me to forgive

One day a while back, a man, his heart heavy with grief, was walking in
the woods. As he thought about his life this day, he knew many things
were
not right. He thought about those who had lied about him back when he
had
a job.

His thoughts turned to those who had stolen his things and cheated him.
He
remembered family that had passed on. His mind turned to the illness he
had
that no one could cure. His very soul was filled with anger, resentment
and frustration.
Standing there this day, searching for answers he could not find,
knowing
all else had failed him, he knelt at the base of an old oak tree to
seek
the one he knew would always be there, and with tears in his eyes, he
prayed

Lord- You have done wonderful things for me in this life. You have told
me to do many things for you, and I happily obeyed. Today, you have told
me to forgive. I am sad, Lord, because I cannot. I don't know how. It is
not fair Lord. I didn't deserve these wrongs that were done against me
and I shouldn't have to forgive. As perfect as your way is Lord, this
one
thing I cannot do, for I don't know how to forgive. My anger is so deep
Lord,
I fear I may not hear you, but I pray that you teach me to do this one
thing
I cannot do - Teach me To Forgive.

As he knelt there in the quiet shade of that old oak tree, he felt
something fall onto his shoulder. He opened his eyes. Out of the corner
of
one eye, he saw something red on his shirt. He could not turn to see
what
it was because where the oak tree had been was a large square piece of
wood in the ground. He raised his head and saw two feet held to the wood
with a large spike through them. He raised his head more, and tears came
to his eyes as he saw Jesus hanging on a cross. He saw spikes in His
hands, a gash in His side, a torn and battered body, deep thorns sunk
into
His head. Finally he saw the suffering and pain on His precious face. As
their eyes met, the man's tears turned to sobbing, and Jesus began to
speak.

Have you ever told a lie, he asked?
The man answered - yes Lord.

Have you ever been given too much change and kept it?
The man answered yes Lord. And the man sobbed more and more.

Have you ever taken something from work that wasn't yours, Jesus asked?
And the man answered yes Lord.

Have you ever sworn, using my Father's name in vain?
The man, crying now, answered yes Lord.

As Jesus asked many more times, Have you ever? The man's crying became
uncontrollable, for he could only answer yes Lord.

Then Jesus turned His head from one side to the other, and the man felt
something fall on his other shoulder. He looked and saw that it was the
blood of Jesus. When he looked back up, his eyes met those of Jesus, and
there was a look of love the man had never seen or known before. Jesus
said, I didn't deserve this either, but I forgive you.

It may be hard to see how you're going to get through something, but
when
you look back in life, you realize how true this statement is Read the
first line slowly and let it sink in. This is simple, and important.
Read
onThis first line is deep.

If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it. Lord I love You
and I need You, come into my heart, Today. For without You I can do
nothing.

God bless you.

Re:[JOYnet] Jesus is not 'just' Great

2002-12-01 Thread Shobith Thomas
Dear All

Dear Prejomy that was a great Sharing on suffering. I would also like to share some
similar experiences

During my journey home this weekend I had some similar exp like these. Although I
could not offer it then after reading ur mail I was able to suffer it with christ. I
was expecting to go by a particular Travels and booked the ticket. But when the bus
came it was a Bus by another Travels(Had I known I would not have booked). Since the #
of people who go in afternoon was less they had a joint venture. Two Travels
collaborated and put up a Bus that I did not like Travelling with.

It was very very slow and took almost 5 hours. On getting down I got a bus that takes
me to my house's doorstep. I thanked the Lord for seeing that I was late and got this
particular bus. But to my dismay I found that they had changed route and I had to walk
about 1.5 KM. Praise the Lord that I was able to say a decade of rosary (I couldn't
complete it as I drawn into some other thing)and reach home

dear all I want to throw light to the fact that if we can see our God shining in all
our adversaries then as Micheal Jackson sings we can
Heal the World
Make it a better place
For U and for Me and the entire Universe
