I'm not sure what you bean about changing depending on 'where I'm
using the plugin'.

you could use an if statement to set the parameter to change.
for instance

if(q=='foo'){
var term=q;
}
if(term==null){
term=q;
}
[/code]

something like that I think, but you haven't really spelled out what
you are trying to do .
