1. Open Windows Exploer
2. Select Options
3. Select tab for File Types
4. Find Entry for Microsoft Excel Worksheet from the registered file types
5. Select Edit
6. Select Open from Actions
7. Check Confirm Open After Download.

I think the Tomcat mime type doesn't have a setting for xls type. If not
present specify it and restart.

Buddy this cannot be done in IE 5 and above , ie if are going to download a
word doc and u have winword in ur mach , tyour requirement wont work

This is not browser that does force the file to download...
Its basically a content type property that you are setting...
the following code will force your browser to give your file as download.

response.setContentType(application/csv);
response.setHeader(Content-Disposition,attachment;
filename=UPLOAD.csv;);

You know, personally, I think knowledge is more important than imagination,
because knowledge presents the framework in which imagination makes sense,
and without that framework, imagination might as well be the babbling of a
newborn. With that framework, you can use the imagination to create new
plateaus, new heights to shoot for.

Ignore me, I'm babbling, it's just that every time I see this signature I
think the EXACT SAME THING. :)
