The three dots in the upper right are the menu button, unless perhaps your
device has a hardware menu button. Tap that, then Send, then Share.

I'm not trying to be obnoxious here, but why put messages that you want to keep
into the trash in the first place? Trash is for messages you never want to see

Yes, Android wants it to be obsolete, but many devices still have them, like
all of my Samsung devices.

However, I can't see any hint of one on Samsung's web pages, so perhaps they've
caught up. The 7" tablet I got as a bank promotional recently had one, so I
assumed yours did too.

Re: [k-9-mail] Backup the K9 mail POP3 data

2015-08-27 Thread Dennis Rockwell

On 08/27/2015 06:13 PM, GlueFactoryBJJ wrote:
I agree. I have a Samsung Note *2* that I have been unable to upgrade
because I have (some VERY old) POP3 emails that I HAVE to have (work
and my hosting company which doesn't support IMAP and cannot switch
right now for various reasons) among 3 different POP3 accounts.

Frankly, it is BEYOND my ability to understand why K-9 Mail doesn't
have a backup option for both settings AND data (emails). This
feature has been asked for by users (on various forums) since at least
2009 and is an extraordinarily reasonable request! Surely, with 5-10
million users (per Google Play Store) K-9 Mail can make this a bit of
a priority.

This answers both the above email and your direct reply, since the
answers are very connected.

I use IMAP for all of my accounts; I dumped Earthlink maybe six years
ago because they didn't offer IMAP until this year. So, adding a new
device means just transferring the settings (via google drive for me),
then letting K9 download the messages in the folders I choose; K9
currently takes about 500MB of storage. I'd be terrified if my only
copy of precious email was on a portable (loseable, stealable,
breakable) device.

Are your emails stored locally, or on your POP servers? If they're
still on the servers, you can fire up a thick email client on a PC,
something like Thunderbird, and pull down copies. Thunderbird (at
least) stores its mail in easily-readable flat files instead of a database.

If your email is all on your device, I'd suggest that you make an IMAP
account on some provider (there have been lots of discussions here about
which; I just use gmail, but I know that's not acceptable for
everybody), and use the 'Forward' command to get (mangled, but readable)
copies off your device. There are some hackerish ways of clearing off
the forwarding crap, but that involves programming, or at least
familiarity with MH or similar software packages and some scripting.

Mailers used to support a feature like 'Forward', called 'Resend', which
didn't mangle the message being sent; I used that to get decades of my
old email off of my work computer (BSD Unix) up to gmail when I
converted from desktop storage.

Also, gmail will happily poll POP accounts for you; perhaps others will,
too. I still get some of my email through Earthlink that way.

As a last resort, if your device is rooted, you can copy off the
database files and use a desktop version of the database software to
read them. When I was using a rooted device, I used an Android-native
database browser to investigate K9's message storage. It wasn't simple,
but it wasn't completely opaque, either, and I'm not a database wonk.

But really, get the emails off your too-fragile device into an IMAP
server where you can manage them properly!

Good luck! If you feel like hacking Thunderbird email files, I'll
gladly chip in.

[k-9-mail] Backup/restore issues

2015-08-23 Thread Dennis Rockwell
I just transferred K9 to a new device, and used backup and restore and had the
following issues:

Some folders had the wrong "show in top group" setting.

The order of accounts was not preserved.

The number of preview lines was not preserved.

More if I find any.

Same K9 version (5.107), both devices are gen 1 Nexus 7, old Android
5.1.1Lollipop, new device 4.4.3. Performance issues (of everything) drove me
to downgrade.

back as a .doc online but on my phone it comes in as a winmail.dat.

As a doc online how? A Microsoft email application, perhaps? What does
a webmail interface show you?

A Microsoft app will show you a winmail.dat as a doc file.

I used to be able to open and read my own .doc contracts on my phone
but it changed a while back (can't tell you the exact date it changed)
but something has changed with k9 to cause this problem since the
document is fine out on the web and when it comes into my desktop.

Your Microsoft desktop? On the web as viewed via Outlook?

Microsoft has a long history of creating applications that violate
standards (they do NOT write the standards, the code they write is NOT
gospel) and hiding that from the users.

Since k9 used to be able to open these just fine, I know that they
should be able to fix whatever is causing the problem now.

I can confidently assure you that the K-9 developers (I'm NOT one of
them) have no interest in writing and maintaining the code for
converting a .doc to a winmail.dat.

Even if no one has the answer at present, k9 needs to look into
changes they have made that might be causing the issue and fix it back
to the way it was. Are the k9 coders reading these posts to know of
the problem?

Please email me a doc file and cc yourself. I will look at it via
gmail's web interface (chrome and firefox on Linux), K-9 (Android 4.4.2
and 5.1.1), and Thunderbird on Linux. I promise to be honest about what
I see.

They do get deleted eventually. I suspect that if a background fetch or other
processing is going on (note the unintelligible mumbling in the header), delete
is taken care of later. Also, if you hit it just right, you'll get a No Text

5.105 fixed this as well, after clearing and reloading.

Another symptom that arose with 5.1 is that the message formatting isn't
working quite right;I see lots of = and other encoding artifacts in messages.

It will take some hours for the fixed version to show up in Google

I updated K-9 on my Nexus-7[2012]/Android 5.1 tablet to the just
released 5.104 (alpha) -- from .103 (alpha) -- and am still getting
a crash on the message list "select all" (which the change log

Confirm. Same hardware, software, and symptom. Selecting messages one

I think I'm seeing the same thing, and it's been briefly discussed

The way it's supposed to work is that you clear the app's defaults in the app
manager, and from them on, Android should ask the "open with" question when you
tap a phone number. Just never ever tap the "always" selection, or you'll have
to go clear the default again.

I haven't tried it with a phone number.

Is there a URI scheme like mailto for phone numbers? I'd hope that uses the
same mechanism.

account settings/folders is where you *tell* k-9 which folders to use. It
doesn't pick the right settings for gmail (I don't know why). Set trash,
drafts, spam to [gmail]/ whatever and it will work fine. Just tap the
designation and pick the folder you want.

Not trivially. Since the block is external, an app would have to attempt it,
then diagnose the problem.

K-9 isn't good at displaying its issues regarding network troubles. Can you see

Can't you remove it from the home screen the same way you'd remove anything

In the system settings/apps (or app manager), you can often tap disable. It

Hit "Select all" in the trash folder, but then it gets hard to describe,

Account settings/sending mail/composition defaults, there's a checkbox for
BCC'ing to yourself.

There's also the "sent" folder (account settings/folders); k-9 puts a copy of

Pedantry: SSL/TLS is an encrypted transport layer, run over TCP, and used by
HTTPS, SMTP, IMAPS, and maybe POP to encrypt an otherwise plaintext

The layering is intended to be clearly separated and should be thought of that

As others have said, moving messages to your server's spambox trains it.

Additionally, I deal with my gmail spambox with my desktop Thunderbird,
training its filter at the same time; I know that there are lots of
K-9/TBird users here.

Odd, that's the behavior I have with 4.903. Both the back button the

What folder does K-9 use to store the sent email on your phone? Any
folder that is synced should be synced in both directions.

Check Account Settings/Folders/Sent folder; this should point to your

Hmmm... the "right" way to deal with this might be something like the

You can't share to Docs2Go, dagnabbit. Searching for "android share to

I'm afraid that's not correct. The "Expunge" button sends the expunge

Ah! Does "Clear local messages" (long-press on the folder) do what I

Ah, so you might have some control over how the attachment is tagged.
Figure out how the email client (a simple perl script would suffice for
a scriptable task like this) marks its attachments and make it
better/smarter/configurable. Depending on the mailer, it might be as
easy as a command-line argument, or perhaps a manually-constructed mime

A suffix-to-mimetype map for use with a useless mimetype would be an

I expect that K-9 hands the file off to Android along with its mimetype

There has to be an app that prints and can be shared to. I use PrintBot.

The share list is generated by Android, and apps have to advertise what can be

This requires that you have a folder designated as your Archive folder;
check Account Settings/Folders (NOT Folder Settings) and see what
Archive is set to.  That must be set to a folder that already exists;

How default do you want to get? If you have a folder designated "Archive"
(account settings/folders) you can show the Archive action on messages (global
settings/display, I think), which looks like an older-style menu(?), and will
toss the message into the Archive folder immediately.

I am really not a dumb user. But, where and how do I get to the accounts?

You can hit the K-9 in the upper left until it no longer has a < next to
it. That'll be the accounts list.

Have you used at Galaxy S4? I swear it's really different.

Do any other apps display the menu button?

IN K-9, there are 4 options at the bottom.

Those are the normal controls for that screen. The three-dot menu

I get audio notifications on my Nexus 7 with no trouble.

Check the system (not K-9's settings) Sound/Volumes and make sure that the
"Notifications" volume is up. The Media, Notification, and Alarm volumes are
independent, and the last two get adjusted if you push one of the volume
buttons when a notification or alarm is playing.

Hi,

why can´t I set up an email-address with username/log in "*@xxx.de"? If
I type in this, the buttons are disabled. It only works if I type
something else than the "*".

* is not a valid character in an RFC 2822 address.

The list of valid characters can be found in
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2822

Didn't see anything of the kind there...

3.2.4, atext includes *, dot-atom includes atext.
3.4.1, local-part can be a dot-atom, addr-spec is local-part "@" domain

So, *@domain is explicitly allowed. I can't say I *like* it...

Regardless, just because the RFC says something you want to do isn't
illegal doesn't mean you should automatically do it.

But conforming applications should accept everything that's legal.

The fact is, the vast majority of mail servers in the world will
reject many email addresses that are *technically* legal.

The real world often doesn't care what the RFCs say.

(for which I read: arrogant/ignorant developers think they can ignore
the specs)

And people wonder why applications don't interoperate in a sensible way.

Each account has folders designated for tasks; messages are composed in the
folder designated "Drafts" (not necessarily named Drafts), then a folder named
(yes, named) "Outbox" until it's sent to the SMTP server, then in the folder
designated "Sent".

I concur. I just sent an email each way between two of my accounts via
TBird. It showed up within seconds on TBird, but I had to manually
check with K-9. That eliminates server issues.

To make sure that TBird wasn't, umm, optimizing things, I sent from K-9
to each account, Tbird picked them both up within seconds, K-9 waited
for the next poll.

Is there interference between push and poll? Should we disable poll for
pushed folders?

The two accounts were gmail and corporate LookOut servers, very
different code bases, AFAIK.

Try setting the "push" and "poll" folders to "None".

While I can't say much about my speculated frequency change, I can now report a
new symptom: the blank messages always display properly after rotating the
device. There is no correlation between initial orientation and success.
Returning to the original orientation always (so far) displays the message
properly.

I hope this is a useful clue.

I'm talking about 4.802, not 4.801. 4.801 does not show this bug for me, but
it apparently does for some others. Is the N7 being an Asus device relevant?

In any case, because you nonetheless make good sense, I uninstalled 4.801 and
installed 4.802, imported my saved settings. The problem still exists,
although perhaps with less frequency. I'll know more after a bit of testing.

I'm extremely reluctant to recreate my configuration from scratch; I'd have
several hundred folders to set up, even knowing how to use the classes properly.

I haven't done this because uninstalling, re-installing and re-syncing my email
is a serious pain, even with settings export and import; Android won't allow me
to just freakin' install an older version, dammit.

That said, I'm sicker than a dog and so I actually have some time. I tried to
characterize this bug with no definitive results. I haven't found a message
that will always or never display, so I can confidently conclude that it's not
dependent on message content, or on theme.

More explicitly, any given message may or may not display. It (definitely)
doesn't alternate or (AFAICT with 15 min of testing) depend on how I get to a
message (prev/next, folder view), or whether the previous message displayed
properly.

In short, I can't reliably reproduce the bug on demand, but it happens with
about 50% probability any time I attempt to display any given message.

Again, unrooted 1st gen Nexus 7, stock Android 4.4.2.

You need to use a root-capable file manager (like Root Explorer), the database
(like most app-private files) are in directories with restrictive permissions.
