[kde] Enabling key clicks
In the Input - Keyboard tab of System Settings, one can enable sounds when keys are pressed. I cannot get this feature to work, in fact the Help page specifically mentions that this feature will not work on all computers. Why won't it work, and how can I get it to work? Sound on this machine otherwise works fine. Thanks. -- Dotan Cohen http://gibberish.co.il http://what-is-what.com ___ This message is from the kde mailing list. [kde] Re: Link (impossibly generic systemsettings and system monitor): GNOME KDE Developers Go To Battle Over A Name
Big Snip I have found that having all apps named via a K at the start infuriating in the past. Also that the name often doesn't have any bearing on the function of the app. In some cases this may be due to language and as most software uses an English language naming convention I can understand why people might like that. System Settings - In my view this is probably the messiest aspect of kde4. I can understand why people might feel that it isn't really system settings but in some respects some of it is. As to K's ;-) I didn't have any problem with Kcontrol really and in real terms there is no reason why it shouldn't still be called that but in my view a more apt title would be Settings. That can grow without problem and bears no relationship to control panel or the like. Not that I hate windoze and everything to do with it. Once in it as it stands I have to wonder. Account details for instance, surely that should be admin. Then there is Common Appearance and Behaviour against Workspace Appearance and Behaviour. Both sound vaguely similar to me - Desktop Settings. And then there is File Associations, now just where should that be. To me the whole thing needs breaking down to further levels to allow people to get to what ever they are after. Eg The 2 I mentioned might come under Desktop, we know we are in settings so there is no need for anything else. Desktop can then be broken down further. Other top level names might be Admin, Network, and yes even System to cover things like launches at start up, back ground searches, associations etc. Software is likely to be another candidate as well but many regard KDE's attempts at that with disdain. I have already had problems with it so have others. It's best left to the distro's really and they should maintain it, John ___ This message is from the kde mailing list. I'm not /sure/ about this, but I /think/ that feature may use the traditionally on-board PC-speaker/piezo/buzzer, now legacy and often omitted especially since most mobos come with full onboard sound these days, not the regular sound system. Some add-on sound-cards have a two-pin input plug that can be connected to the onboard pc-speaker output, in place of or in addition to it, and then a separate volume control for the pc-speaker input. There's also the pc-speaker kernel driver. If your kernel doesn't have that module loaded or built-in, it probably won't work even if you have the hardware. -- Duncan - List replies preferred. Dotan Cohen posted on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 23:04:38 +0300 as excerpted: No, way too much latency! #!/bin/bash while [ 0 ]; do read -p mplayer tick.wav done I wonder if it is due to PulseAudio, Mplayer, or what else. I'm not about to install jack for this, though. LOL! That reminds me, way back in the 486 and MS Windows 3.1 era, when I bought my first computer, it didn't originally have a sound card. Later, I bought one, and it came with a sound effect program that could be configured to play a sound for various events. I had the bright idea of recording all the letters and numbers using the mic, and setting the corresponding recording for each one. BUT! THAT WAS A 486SX, 25 MHz! (With a grand total of 4 MB of RAM and 130 MB of hard drive!) I *VERY* *QUICKLY* realized THAT wasn't going to work, as the letters were playing about 10 characters behind where I was **TRYING** to type, and then only playing about every third to fifth one, with random delay between, depending on what else the computer might have been trying to do! If I'd actually been able to do it without messing up (say I plugged in the headphones and let someone else listen and watch, so I couldn't hear them), it would have probably been at least 20-30 characters behind. But it never got that far... You think latency is bad your way, just a tick and with a modern computer, consider trying it ith a 25 MHz 486SX... saying the actual letters... in your own voice.. and only getting every 2nd to 5th letter more or less at random! -- Duncan - List replies preferred. [kde] Re: KDEPIM 4.6 prob^Wimpressions
Restoring the .kde4/share/config directory from backups did not help. But I saw lots of stuff like kdeinit4 / knotify4 processes, and then I finally did what I never did before in such cases: I rebooted. And things are working again now.
