Ah - I was looking at the Session Manager startup and shutdown screen. No
wonder I didn't find it :-) Looking in Login screen for shutdown options is
about as logical as Microsoft's telling you to use Start when you want to
shutdown :-)

Thanks. Both the mis-behaving netbook and the behaving laptop have
/sbin/poweroff as the command. I'll try changing the netbook's setting to
/sbin/shutdown -hP (after I've looked at the man page to see what -hP sets).

I can confirm that that has cured the problem. I knew -h - I use that when I
have to do a command-line shutdown, but I didn't know -P

Thanks

This is just wrong. Option -p doesn't even exist. If I change it to:

/sbin/shutdown -hP now

 then it works correctly again.

In which file will I find this? I want to check if my problem laptop is the
same. Thanks

It's '/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc'.

 Hi all,

since I have updated to 4.6.2 the shutdown doesn't work anymore. KDE an
X are terminated but I get a login console, where I have to login and
type 'sudo shutdown -h now' to finally shut my system down.

 Reboot works fine.

I also tested with a new user, same problem.

Is there anybody with the same problem, or some ideas how to fix it?
 I'am running ArchLinux x86_64.

Same here on Gentoo.  Impossible to shutdown the machine from KDE.

Same here for x86 but not for x86-64. My ArchLinux running on AMD64
shuts down well but not on a 32 bit ArchLinux.

Also got kded hogging up 100% CPU on AMD64 but not on x86.

Running KDE SC 4.6.2.

I run Fedora 14 with 4.6.1 on two laptops. One of them has exactly this
problem, the other does not. Go figure!

Sorry, I run 4.6.1 instead of 4.6.2 in this machine, the other is untested.
