This behavior is correctly performed by kate on my system. All .tex file choose my XML file for highlighting when I open them. However, kile does not. It always chooses the default settings and not my custom ones. I can switch to my highlighting scheme manually but this has to be done for each file separately which can be very annoying for a larger project. After removing the limitation for the number of shown characters, kate becomes unusable. Navigation, scrolling, etc. is hardly possible and the CPU consumption is very high. It's not even possible to work with a 500kB file on a machine with 12 cores. Attached is an example file (generated with json-generator.com) causing such problems. We discovered the same problem with the plasmashell process.
Several reboots needed to hit the problem. It looks that the problem is timing
related.(race condition)
Process ends with errorcode 141, which means process receives SIGPIPE.
The SIGPIPE-defaulthandler terminates the process.
To figure out the sender of the SIGPIPE we installed the following signal
handler:

My internet connection is rather narrowband and extremely slow sometimes. The update of comets ans astreroids seems to go very fast; as if there was a time-out and no download occurred. Does KStars report a failed update? Anyway I then used What's Interesting Tonight. The first usage after an ephemeris update showed all asteroids and comets with RA=0 abd DEC=0. After restarting KStars WIT showed the correct RA and DEC. In fact WIT does not start correctly the first invokation.
