[plasmashell] [Bug 397662] Activity Switcher not cycles through more than two activities on Wayland with Meta+Tab shortcut

2021-10-17 Thread Shavez
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=397662

Just updated to 5.23 and the Activity Switcher adds an entry to task manager
sometimes when I switch activities in quick successions with some windows open
in all activities. This happens both in X and Wayland.

In addition to it, on Wayland, the switcher behaves like a window and shifts
the windows already open instead of overlapping the windows.

Git commit 2958881264caf8d3bd83a34411e9586f8fcb7211 by Vlad Zahorodnii.
Committed on 18/10/2021 at 05:26.
Pushed by vladz into branch 'Plasma/5.23'.

Restore old behavior of Workspace::clientArea(clientOpt, Toplevel)

When geometry updates are blocked, the output doesn't get updated. This
breaks Workspace::clientArea() overload that takes only the window.

Previously, clientArea() would look up the output where the window is
every time it's called, so the fact that the screen id or AbstractOutput
is unsynchronized with the frame geometry was irrelevant.

This change restores the old behavior as 5.23 is affected by the
output() being out of sync with the frameGeometry(). Specifically, when
kwin starts managing an X11 window, it will block geometry updates,
setup the window, e.g. make it fullscreen, and unblock geometry updates.

Since Workspace::clientArea(clientArea, Toplevel) uses the output(),
X11Client::setFullScreen() will most likely put the X11 window at a
wrong output if it's called inside X11Client::manage().

where to add the conditional behavior, or where/how to pull in configuration.

After upgrading to Plasma 5.23.0, I was bummed to find out that sub-categories
no longer work, as I have a huge number of audio production tools that I've
sorted into categories like "Music Creation", "Audio Tools", "Media Players",
etc. Now everything is smooshed into one really long list.

Similarly, Wine applications no longer show up in their natural Start Menu
hierarchy, so I have five "Uninstall" apps that I can no longer see what
program they're associated with.

I'd definitely vote for a "Show sub-categories" option to enable the old
behavior, especially since the new menu is otherwise quite superior to kickoff,
IMO.

Screenshot of top window border line

SUMMARY
The new distinct top window border line in 5.23 looks out of place on maximised
windows. This applies to both light and dark themes, but it is more noticeable
in the latter where the contrast between the title bar colour and border colour
is higher.

Other DEs (including Windows) don't render borders for maximised windows. This
also provides a visual hint to help distinguish between maximised and
non-maximised windows.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Maximize a window

OBSERVED RESULT
Top window border line is visible.

EXPECTED RESULT
Top window border line is not visible.

This doesn't happen on 5.23. I think the upgrade fixed it. I just tried to
reproduce it, but the notifications stack shows up just fine. I have even tried
moving the panel to different edges of the screen, and it was still working
well. I think it is safe to mark this bug as resolved.

I have found out why it was happening. I had my resolution set to 1800 instead
of 2160. There is only one resolution on wayland, so I couldn't tell you. I
still think krunner and the panel editing menu should adjust based on the
resolution of the screen.

2021-10-17 Thread Nate Graham
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=443576

Indeed, it is quite interesting, and not at all obvious!

I'm actually taking advantage of this bug to work around a deficiency of my
hardware. My 14" 4K screen's optimal scale is around 250%, but if I set it to
that, things would be blurry. So I use 200% scale with 11pt Noto Sans which
makes everything 22% bigger. This gives me roughly the same effect as 244%
scale with nice crisp lines. :)

So you're going from Noto Sans 10 to 11, right? In this case, the issue is
actually in Noto Sans itself, believe it or not. The issue is that the metrics
of Noto Sans 11pt are about 22% bigger than the metrics of Noto Sans 10pt,
rather than 10% bigger.

As you're aware, tons of things in Plasma respect the font size by deriving
their size directly from the font metrics, or by using GridUnit, LargeSpacing,
or another common unit, all of which also take into consideration the font
size.

As a result, going to Noto Sans 11pt makes everything 22% bigger rather than
10% bigger, which is what you expect. If you change the font to something else
without this weirdly huge jump in the size between 10 and 11, you'll get the
sizing you expect.

The correct fix would be in Noto Sans itself, believe it or not. There isn't
anything we can do in KDE code to work around it short of using a different
default font.

Oh I see where.

The label is actually accurate, since it is actually telling you how many watts
of power are currently being consumed. It doesn't matter if the batter ys
charged or not; that's the current power draw.

In Bug 443149, I encountered an issue I think is the same as this bug:

...a flickering black square to appear above the menu (the icon's right-click
menu appearing and disappearing rapidly), and/or causes the entire desktop to
act as if the mouse was constantly spamming right-click inputs to the app under
the cursor (menus appearing and disappearing, hundreds of Konsole "configure
shortcut" dialogs opening). At this point, Xorg is burning 1 core of CPU,
plasmashell is burning between 1 and 2 cores of CPU, and the apps you hovered
might burn CPU as well.

Killing the app whose icon you right-clicked fixes the infinite right-clicks,
but plasmashell keeps burning 2 CPU cores (though Xorg no longer burns CPU).
Killing plasmashell fixes the CPU burning (but may not stop the app whose icon
you right-clicked from burning CPU).

I reinstalled Neon using a new image and the bug is still present. Curiously,
while in the live mode the bug was gone, things would just load as normal, but
after installing I get the same issue. This is probably Neon specific then.

KDE Neon doesn't give that option. Settings->Workspace Behaviour->Screen
Locking. It shows a login screen (which should never have exited to) but it's
not possible to login.

Actually I think I know what might've been causing it. We were running an
ethereum miner on the graphics card's GPUs and that may have taken too much GPU
resources and caused the display to not work as well... but I don't know why
that would logout the user. This wasn't happening since we shut off that
miner.
