[kwin] [Bug 452941] Crashes when wide window opened

2022-05-26 Thread Aaron Williams
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452941

--- Comment #9 from Aaron Williams  ---
I am using OpenSUSE. The problem is that when this happens it's almost
impossible to get a backtrace since the desktop becomes unusable, and using gdb
becomes very problematic when this happens.

I do have debug symbols installed.

[Discover] [Bug 454422] New: RFE: Improve the way updates are downloaded, applied and the user is notified

2022-05-26 Thread Timothée Ravier
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454422

Bug ID: 454422
   Summary: RFE: Improve the way updates are downloaded, applied
and the user is notified
   Product: Discover
   Version: master
  Platform: unspecified
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: discover
  Assignee: lei...@leinir.dk
  Reporter: trav...@redhat.com
CC: aleix...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

We should update different resources at different frequencies. Flatpaks should
be updated daily, "silently", in the background with an extra low priority for
network and disk io.

On Kinoite, system updates should behave pretty much the same but with a
different frequency.

If not on metered connection, not on battery and auto updates enabled, discover
should prepare everything in the background and then notify only when user
action is required: restarting apps or rebooting

> sometimes I feel that way about Fedora TBH. When I see the notification I
> feel compelled to go and apply those updates just to make the notifier go
> away from my system tray

Exactly my feeling. I don't want to be bothered every time I open my session by
something that will distract me from what I wanted to do on the computer

Even notifying for reboot is not ideal. In the best case, we would change the
sleep button to suggest poweroff when there are updates to apply. Or have an
apply updates and shutdown button

Thus no notification at all in the best case. Only notify if there is an issue
we can not automatically fix or wait a bit for it to be resolved.

[kate] [Bug 454423] New: PageUp and PageDown when holding left mouse button - selection works improperly

2022-05-26 Thread Semjon Kravtšenko
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454423

Bug ID: 454423
   Summary: PageUp and PageDown when holding left mouse button -
selection works improperly
   Product: kate
   Version: 22.04.1
  Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kwrite-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: semjon...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

When I try to select a large chunk of text, I start with holding left mouse
button from the start position of the selection. After that I need to drag the
cursor to last character of the selection I want to make. The easiest option
would be to press PageDown multiple (or many) times. However, when I do so,
kate "forgets" the start selection position - it resets both the start and the
end selection positions to the cursor position.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a large file
2. Try to select a large chunk of text (about 1000 lines) using PageDown

OBSERVED RESULT
Pressing PageDown prevents you from making the selection

EXPECTED RESULT
Pressing PageDown helps you to make the selection quicker

[kwin] [Bug 454425] New: Windows are resized to a minimal height if I unplug external monitors

2022-05-26 Thread Peter Tselios
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454425

Bug ID: 454425
   Summary: Windows are resized to a minimal height if I unplug
external monitors
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.24.4
  Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: multi-screen
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: ptsel...@outlook.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Created attachment 149225
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=149225&action=edit
Screenshot with the issue.

SUMMARY
***
My current setup is this:
1. Laptop screen at  2560x1440
2. 2xExternal screens at 1920x1080, one at DVI-D and one at HDMI port or the
dock.
3. KDE with X11

Problem: When I suspend the laptop, or I close the lid, or I unplug any of the
external monitors, or I simple undock the laptop, all open windows placed at
the un-plugged screen are moved to one of the other screens, BUT with very
minimal height!
If the session is locked, and I have at least 2 screens, the unlock screen is
visible to only ONE screen. If I use only the laptop's screen, the unlock
screen is not visible and I cannot even see if I type the password to unlock
the screen. Yes, when I manage to unlock, the windows are in a very minimal
HEIGHT. Windows placed on a screen that is not unplugged, are not affected.

This is the outcome when I undocked the laptop this morning. Firefox and
Dolphin where placed on the external screens. The other windows where placed at
the laptop's screens, thus they are not affected by this issue.

Note: Telegram, which as far as I can tell is not a KDE app, is NOT affected by
this issue. However, Libreoffice, Firefox, Chrome, ALL of the other KDE apps
ARE affected.

I have no clue if this is a KWin, KScreen or anything else related, I open in
here because it looks like a mis-calculation of the window size from KWin, but
please move it to the right project if it doesn't belong here.

***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Login to KDE in a multimonitor setup, preferably using screens with
different resolutions
2. Suspend the PC/Undock the laptop
3. Notice the height of the windows.

OBSERVED RESULT
Windows have very short height when they are automatically moved to another
screen.

EXPECTED RESULT
Windows size is maintained.

Selecting past last char -> extend to last column

When selecting past the last character, extend the selection to the last
column. This allows the user to know when the selection has extended
past the last character on a line, even in the presence of trailing
spaces, and will get a newline added to the last line.

This is the behavior of xterm, VTE and rxvt. mlterm doesn't allow
selections to extend past the last non-space character on a line.

Change wording "Leading Column Padding" to "Side Padding"

Since it actually adds padding on both left and right sides,
"Side Padding" might be more accurate.

This change is also propagated to variable and method names.

[kwin] [Bug 454428] New: Touchpad based kinetic scrolling in gtk applications does not work

2022-05-26 Thread Marcus Gursch
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454428

Bug ID: 454428
   Summary: Touchpad based kinetic scrolling in gtk applications
does not work
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.24.5
  Platform: Manjaro
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: input
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: marcus.gur...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

Touchpad based kinetic scrolling in gtk applications does not work when using
kwin (wayland). After doing some digging and testing I found that the reason is
the way wl_pointer.axis_stop events are sent to application windows. kwin
(actually kwayland-server before it was merged in kwin) currently sends the
stop event for each axis in its own frame:

```
[13:  wl_pointer] frame
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_source: 1 (finger)
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_stop: time: 1054759; axis: 0 (vertical)
[13:  wl_pointer] frame
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_source: 1 (finger)
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_stop: time: 1054759; axis: 1 (horizontal)
[13:  wl_pointer] frame
```

In other compositors (weston, wlroots based like sway, mutter) the stop events
for both axes are bundled in a single frame:

```
[13:  wl_pointer] frame
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_source: 1 (finger)
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_stop: time: 1054759; axis: 0 (vertical)
[13:  wl_pointer] axis_stop: time: 1054759; axis: 1 (horizontal)
[13:  wl_pointer] frame
```

After patching kwayland-server to behave like sway etc kinetic scrolling works.
The patch needs more work obviously and is only intended to show the bare
minimum of changes to "make it work":

```
diff --git a/src/server/pointer_interface.cpp
b/src/server/pointer_interface.cpp
index b552ac4..128c6d9 100644
 }
 }
 }
```

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open some gtk application, e.g. use gedit to display a large text file.
2. Scroll using touchpad and lift fingers while they are moving.

OBSERVED RESULT

The scrolling stops immediately after lifting the fingers.

EXPECTED RESULT

The scrolling goes on after lifting the fingers up.

LOL, what no command line? geez, silly gui stuff abstracts too much.

This was a refresher on Linux, but was working on some Microsoft projects

I installed KUbuntu, wiped Neon this was too unstable. Hope Kubuntu is
supported by command line, dpkg, apt, synaptic...
Will have to look up Steam, heard about it off and on, gaming right?

Add Perspective Ellipse Assistant Tool

This assistant is meant to help create an ellipse
within a quadrilateral (tetragon).
It helps the user to draw circles in perspective.
The assistant draws the vanishing points that fit
that perspective.

This commit however doesn't have correct calculations,
so the end result assistant doesn't work properly.

[dolphin] [Bug 453700] dolphin in detailed view open files and folders also if I click elsewhere on the line not only on the filename

2022-05-26 Thread Johannes Schmidt
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=453700

--- Comment #14 from Johannes Schmidt  ---
The biggest issue is that it's very unintuitive to have no empty space in the
view that doesn't cause an action on drop or click.

For example, I used to click into the empty space to select the view (in split
mode) for toolbar commands or to sync the terminal directory. Now, after some
adjustment period I found that I can click the scroll bar if the directory list
is full.

Similarly drag&drop works same as before by dropping on the column headers
instead of directly into the pane. It works and I'm starting to get used to it,
but it sure as hell isn't intuitive. It took me a few seconds of trial and
error to find some surface I can use to get my file where it should.

Adding to the unintuitiveness of these weird usage patterns that this behavior
encourages, there is also the inconsistency. For example, when clicking to the
left of a file, an unfolded directory tree, or exactly between the arrows, that
space still seems to have the old behavior where a click doesn't select the
line. I've caught myself a few times unfolding a directory just to have a
reliable space to click into.

So while I would much prefer the old behavior back, I would also happily settle
for a consistent, less unintuitive compromise.

that "pixel granularity" would be more correct. Perhaps that was not a
bright idea. Change it back to GL_LINEAR.

I have always used just the Meta+L as that's the key combination that I'm used

Also I didn't know about the CTRL+ALT+L (until now), but even if I did, I would
probably never used it as it requires more keys.

In my opinion Flatpaks should be updated as the user prefers for other updates,
automatic or manual.

 Or some options could be added for each type of packages, system, Flatpak,
Snap and AppImage in the future.

I normally prefer to update them manually as I don't work to have anything
broken during the work days and also I don't want to do it over mobile
connections with limited traffic data.

go to "kde settings" > "work space" > "start and stop" > "automatic start"
add connexion script to launch any Chrome web app.
Skype settings adds Skype in "Applications"

2) Are you using X11 or wayland? (Available in System Settings > About this

3) Do apps other than web apps work?

Skype as the others is launched then disappears.

If I launched manually any app also skype and the script to launch web app then
no problem.

[kwin] [Bug 454433] New: External display is not detected when laptop is running on battery

2022-05-26 Thread VesperLlama
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454433

Bug ID: 454433
   Summary: External display is not detected when laptop is
running on battery
   Product: kwin
   Version: 5.24.90
  Platform: Archlinux Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: platform-drm
  Assignee: kwin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: k...@vesperllama.anonaddy.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
My laptop has a dGPU which is the AMD RX 6600M to which external monitors
connect to. When I plug in the HDMI cable on Wayland session after login and
the laptop is running on battery then the external monitor is not detected by
Plasma but the monitor shows that it is connected to a source but it just shows
a black screen. When I plug in the charger and then plug in the HDMI cable then
the monitor is detected by Plasma.

A regression in 5.24.90 –
In Plasma 5.24.90, after plugging in the charger, the display shows up in
Display Configuration, but it still doesn't display the output to the monitor
and only outputs on the laptop screen and it incorrectly identifies the
displays.
But on 5.24.5, the display correctly outputs to the monitor after following the
previous steps.

On X11 (both 5.24.5 and 5.24.90) and if I connect the monitor before logging in
through SDDM, it works without having to connect the laptop to the charger.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Login to Plasma Wayland
2. Connect HDMI cable to laptop
3. Check Display Configuration

OBSERVED RESULT
The external display is not detected until laptop is plugged in to charger and
then reconnecting HDMI cable.

EXPECTED RESULT
The external monitor should work even on battery.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Distro: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.5 and 5.24.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.94.0
Qt Version: 5.15.4

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

On 5.24.90, the external monitor always says disabled and changing the display
output in Plasma doesn't do anything.

On 5.24.90, wayland-session.log is empty for me, but on 5.24.5, it shows the
following error when I plug in the monitor on battery –
kwin_wayland_drm: failed to open drm device at "/dev/dri/card0"

[dolphin] [Bug 454434] New: Space gap in Dolphin between Details view mode and the location field

2022-05-26 Thread John
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454434

Bug ID: 454434
   Summary: Space gap in Dolphin between Details view mode and the
location field
   Product: dolphin
   Version: 22.04.1
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: bars: location
  Assignee: dolphin-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: ilikef...@waterisgone.com
CC: kfm-de...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
***
A gap between the details view mode icon and the location bar
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Dolphin
2. Look at the horizontal bar below the title bar that has the navigation
buttons (back, forward) and the 3 view modes (Icons, Compact, Details) and the
location field showing the current directory location

OBSERVED RESULT
Between the 3rd detail mode (the Details one) and location section that starts
with either ">" or "/" there's now a gap (just the background), which was not
there before, at least in the versions of KDE Plasma that I've used in Kubuntu
until Kubuntu 21.10

EXPECTED RESULT
To be no space game and the Details view mode icon to be close to the location
field
Like you can have if you grab the vertical line that separates the left
navigation panel and the right content panel and drag it left until the
location field is right next to the Details view mode icon

If this was changed intentionally to make the texts not be trimmed in the left
navigation panel, maybe it would be better to detach the vertical line
separating the two panels from the location field.
It seems that grabbing it moving it to the right it moves also the location
field to the right increasing that gap

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Linux/KDE Plasma:
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.90
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.95
Qt Version: 5.15.4

2022-05-26 Thread John
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454434

--- Comment #1 from John  ---
Also I see that if I drag that vertical line to the left and make the
navigation panel narrow enough for the item to be trimmed (to show with ... at
the end) hovering over them doesn't display a tooltip with their full name.

[systemsettings] [Bug 452443] Left-handed mode is only applied to currently connected mouse, not all mice

> This also occurs when a USB mouse is disconnected and then reconnected.

I tried to reproduce that and I noticed something interesting. This time I used
my Thinkpad instead of desktop PC. I cannot reproduce this issue at all here.
Moreover I can set up different pointing devices and it respects those settings
even if I swap USB ports (tried with 2 different mice and builtin buttons for
trackpoint). It shows a dropdown where I can choose a device and set it up
separately. There's no such dropdown on my main PC. They have almost exact
software setup (Arch + KDE 5.24.5). I'm curious how the KCM module decide to
show the dropdown or not, but I'm a noob debugging KDE projects, but I've set
up the dev environment and I'm looking forward to mess around. Could somebody
make a hint on which package should I look for to try and understand how it
works? Maybe I'll experiment a little and try to fix. It looks like the problem
might vary depending on hardware.

--- Comment #3 from Felix Ernst  ---
Git commit 58622f431b0d7d347333a4bc7b2f57fe17878f9d by Felix Ernst, on behalf
of Travis Burrows.
Committed on 26/05/2022 at 12:38.
Pushed by felixernst into branch 'master'.

Extend selection rectangle to left edge

This commit changes it so the sizes of selection rectangles and hover
highlights in compact and details view mode is identical for all items.

Before this commit, selection rectangles in lists would have varying
indentation of the left edge of the selection rectangle depending on
the preview image's width-to-height ratio. This would cause a sort of
"ragged edge" in both compact and details list view when multiple items
were selected.

This commit doesn't change anything about icon view mode.

Confirming with yesterday's master branch under Windows 10 21H2. In my case,
moving a layer with the Move Tool makes the canvas re-render itself at every
mouse event. It becomes very laggy.

In my haste I forgot to add that I'm using Fedora 35/X11/KDE 5.24.4. The laptop
is a generic laptop available from a company specializing in Linux hardware in
Germany: Tuxedo Computers.

On Fedora, kded appears to run via systemd user unit, so the "right" way to do
it appears to be :

systemd --user restart plasma-kded
