I've seen this with intel, modesetting and AMDGPU (running on either card.)

Generally, I can recover by switching to a console (Alt+F2) and then back,
though monitor 2 almost always loses its settings (wallpaper and so on.)

This is a show stopper.  I switched to lxqt until this is fixed.

LXQT doesn't show this.  FWIW.

One other data point: I swapped to LXQT using kwin as the window manager. 
Everything was fine there, so this does not seem to be kwin related.

I'm seeing this same behavior with plasma 5.8 beta.  A black screen on one
monitor, and the only fix is to restart plasma.
