I don't think this is very similar: in my case the application just hangs, it
does not crash or produce any error messages. Also the debug log doesn't show
any errors.
I have googled and came up empty-handed, really. That's why I chose to reply to
this post.

I have now shut down the AV and started Digikam as administrator to avoid and
issues with access rights, but it's still the same: the process just hangs
there in the task manager, no GUI displayed.

I have around 30,000 items on a SMB share, mostly JPEGs and a few AVI and MP4
videos.
Thanks for the hint with the anti-virus, I will check that out.

I have the same issue in 5.0.0. and 5.1.0 on Windows 10. After a while of
normal use, Digikam will not start anymore. After removal and reinstallation it
will work again.
