Same here. Plasma 5.11.5 on ArchLinux. Don't think this is a Spectacle problem,
but is how the image is scaled in the notification plasmoid. Screenshots that
are much wider than tall are the least blurry, and screenshots that are much
taller than wide are the most blurry.

[plasmashell] [Bug 385097] Notification with image: image is blurry when image aspect ratio doesn't match the aspect ratio used in the notification

plasma-workspace patch

I have a patch for plasma-workspace that improves this, but it's still not
perfect because KIO::PreviewJob is being used to create the thumbnail and it
only creates two sizes, 128px or 256px. So, depending on the final image size
required, a smaller image will still be scaled up, blurring it somewhat.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Settings->Window Management->Desktop Effects->Translucency->Configure
Settings
2. On all 5 settings set to approx 80%
3. Apply and use.

OBSERVED RESULT
Transparency 'saved' of multiple closed windows to form a composite desktop
background which is additive to the original background AND will follow to
other virtual desktops. Opening and closing the apps and refreshing screen (F5)
does not repair background. Does not effect operation of apps.

Changing the background image still composites the old open windows on new
background image.

EXPECTED RESULT
When windows are closed no remnant of them should be used. By Remnant Think
after image masked onto the background image.

SUMMARY
I am using KDE6 on Fedora 40. All patches installed as of 8/8/24 1155pm PT.
It is hosted in KVM with LMDE6 host, also patched up to date.
I am using kmail, proton bridge, syncthing, and mozilla firefox
At random times, usually after doing something in kmail, the screen suddenly
freezes.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. use kmail for a while and eventually it hangs
2.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
The screen freezes.
The VM stops responding to ping from the host.
virt manager shows that it is using all of the 16G memory.
After about a minute, the screen goes black and the display loses connection.
Then after about another minute, the screen is displayed again, although
completely frozen.
At this point, it resumes responding to ping and I can login.

EXPECTED RESULT
no hang

> have you forced it to use software rendering?

Nate,
Please clarify what you mean by "software rendering". It that related to the
diagnostic info I submitted or the environment?
It's running in a KVM VM on hosted on LMDE6 with an AMD3800X CPU and 64G of
ram.
I have experimented with allocating 8GB, 12GB and 16GB of ram for the VM to see
if it makes a difference. Every time, it runs out of memory and then crashes.
I can see with 'htop' that it uses all the swap and allocated memory when it
crashes.
All software on both the host machine and VM is up-to-date.
What additional info do you need? I have several more stack traces that are
collected in kde "Crashed Processes Viewer" I can send more of these in text
files and any additional info that you need.
I am sending this message from Firefox in the VM.I am trying to use this
Fedora40kde in VM as my daily driver machine with kmail, firefox, syncthing,
but because I lose documents every time it crashes, I had to go back to use of
the host LMDE machine with thunderbird, firefox, syncthing, and virtmanager
running. My primary use is job hunting because I am a technical PM in high
tech software development, and the market has been very difficult during the
last year.
I am happy to help any way I can.

Memory leak evidence in virt manager

This is a screen shot from kvm virt manager showing that the Fedora40 VM was
consuming all of its memory until i shut it down, which is shown too. It
hadn't crashed, but it will eventually exhaust all of its memory and swap then
crash. In this instance it has 8G memory allocated but the same thing happens
with 12g and 16g. The host has 64G overall.
hoping this helps

Thanks Nate,
It is using the virtio driver from KVM.
3d Accelleration was turned OFF.
I turned it ON and will continue to check for reoccurance.

[plasmashell] [Bug 491472] plasmashell crashes when using software rendering in a VM

2024-08-13 Thread Randy
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=491472

Nate,
Thank you.
I added 3d Acceleration to the virtio driver.
It hasn't crashed yet.
This crashes left some damage that I could not fix, even by reinstalling kmail.
so, ... I created a completely new virtual machine and reinstalled Fedora40
KDE and reconfigured Kmail and Proton Bridge.
I am monitoring for another failure and I'll let you know

Same here. Plasma 5.11.5 on ArchLinux. Don't think this is a Spectacle problem,
but is how the image is scaled in the notification plasmoid. Screenshots that
are much wider than tall are the least blurry, and screenshots that are much
taller than wide are the most blurry.

plasma-workspace patch

I have a patch for plasma-workspace that improves this, but it's still not
perfect because KIO::PreviewJob is being used to create the thumbnail and it
only creates two sizes, 128px or 256px. So, depending on the final image size
required, a smaller image will still be scaled up, blurring it somewhat.

This is something that really annoyed me when I first started using Kate,
though I've gotten used to it. I've submitted a revision on Phabricator
https://phabricator.kde.org/D11685 to implement this. I also added a new config
setting to enable this, as I know not everyone will want to use it. It is
turned off by default. I've been using it for a while now and it has taken me a
while to get used to it. I also have a revision ready for Kate to add this to
the docbook if this revision lands.

New crash information added by DrKonqi

plasma-discover (5.27.7) using Qt 5.15.10

After clicking on the 'Discover' icon, the progam opened and began to
synchronise. But within about 5 second of opening, the program crashed. Then,
without any additional effort from myself, 'Discover' crashed repeatedly.
(About 2 times.)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. apt list --installed | grep "autoconf" "automake" "recutils" "gettext"
"glibc" "GnuTLS" "GNU make" "iptables" "libtool" "libltdl" "libgcrypt"
"libidn2" "libidn" "libmicrohttpd" "libunistring" "libjansson" "libjose"

OBSERVED RESULT
The results will not print to "results.txt"

EXPECTED RESULT
The script should search for the listed packages, and print the output to
results.txt. Afterward, nano" opens results.txt, so that programmers can read
the output from there. I am working on a group of system diagnostic programs
that will be used for personal computer maintenance.

OBSERVED RESULT
All programs wer operating fine, except for what is needed for mining
operations. I have to use the system monitor, to view cpu consumption. While
viewing this information I am able to troubleshoot issuies with the
network hashrate, and actually "understand" why things happen while mining.
Usually a complete reinstall would
work, but in this case I'll let KDE troubleshoot.

EXPECTED RESULT

This is something that really annoyed me when I first started using Kate,
though I've gotten used to it. I've submitted a revision on Phabricator
https://phabricator.kde.org/D11685 to implement this. I also added a new config
setting to enable this, as I know not everyone will want to use it. It is
turned off by default. I've been using it for a while now and it has taken me a
while to get used to it. I also have a revision ready for Kate to add this to
the docbook if this revision lands.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=366704

Bug ID: 366704
Summary: RFE: Add whitespace (blank line[s]) after collapsed
headings.
   Product: kate
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Debian stable
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: folding
  Assignee: kwrite-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: rhkra...@gmail.com

Details: Now that Bug 112888 (folding without end tags) has been fixed, I'm
finally going back and modifying the .xml file I wrote for highlighting and
folding to work without ending markup. I've run in to a new problem /
disappointment--when I fold without ending markup, there is no whitespace
between collapsed headings:

>From "file /rhk/bin/askRhk4a_2016_notes.aml" Sun Jul 31 07:01:07 2016
>From "Files and location" Sun Jul 31 07:08:12 2016
>From "Notes on design and the state diagram" Sun Jul 31 07:08:30 2016
---++ New problem: No whitespace between collapsed headings
---++ Behavior of askRhk04?.xml files with Kate bugfix
---+++ askRhk04.xml with ending markup
---+++ askRhk04.xml without ending markup
---++ Simplifications
>From "Files and location" Sun Jul 31 07:08:12 2016

Especially when I have a long file / outline, it is hard (for me) to
distinguish / read / skim those collapsed headings without blank lines between
them. The following is what I'd like to see.

---+++ askRhk04.xml with ending markup

---+++ askRhk04.xml without ending markup

>From "Files and location" Sun Jul 31 07:08:12 2016

I can imagine a few approaches to a solution
   * a global option (named, perhaps, "Blank line[s] after collapsed heading")
that, when set, put one (or a specified number) of blank lines after a
collapsed heading and before the next heading (collapsed or not).

   * a new parameter that can be added to any context in a kate .xml
highlighting / folding file (named, perhaps, blankLinesAfterCollapsedHeading)
that, when set, put one (or a specified number) of blank lines after the
collapsed heading defined by the given context.

I can imagine that others (and at times, even me) will prefer not to have that
added blank line, so it should be reasonably easy to change from the GUI. (Of
course, if the option is set in each context, I could switch between blank
lines or not by having 2 .xml files and switching between them.)

This is only an issue for folding when there is no ending markup for a folding
section--with ending markup, blank lines after the ending markup are preserved.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I think I've provided enough under information under Details, but, if not,
ask a question.
2.
3.

Actual Results:
See the example in Details without whitespace.

Expected Results:
See the example in Details with whitespace.

When I say ending markup that is synonymous with end tags.

Several comments:

   * I would like to echo the request that this be fixed, and that scrolling
(in all circumstances) be one display line at a time.

   * The problem that I have (and I'm fairly sure is [related to | the same as]
this problem is that when I'm typing in a multi-line dynamically wrapped
paragraph near the bottom of a page, there are points in time when the
insertion point and text jump and are no longer visible. Yes, I can solve the
problem by scrolling so the paragraph is higher on the page (if it is not the
last paragraph of a document), but it is extremely annoying.

   * I agree with others that the behavior while scrolling either using
down (or up) arrow or clicking on the up or down arrow on the scrollbar
works (almost) as desired, so I have trouble understanding why this seems to be
so difficult. The "almost" is to mention one anomaly that I've noticed--see
below.

   * If implementing a fix as alluded to above (making the scroll during
editing the same as the arrow and scrollbar scroll) causes the mouse
scroll speed to become so fast that it is unusable, couldn't a simple (and
easily user adjustable) time delay be added to the mouse scroll function?

   * The one anomaly: In my documents, with dynamic word wrapped turned on, and
with large paragraphs in the document, in a construct like the following, as I
tried scrolling up or down, at times the scroll jumped by 3 lines at a time. I
don't know why, and haven't tried to dig into it. Here's an example:

I presume this would be repeatable for others.

   * I guess voting is no longer allowed for kate bugs?
