when you start Knights, the chessboard will be created straight away, but it
can't be used. You've to click on "new" to set up a new game before you can use

The documentation could (and should) be adapted.

I would still prefer the solution with "Ignore Date" being used. It is safer
which was the intention of the https://phabricator.kde.org/D26887 and requires
only one click more by the user. But I leave the decision to Toni (see

Hi, I'm having issues with some software slowing down my laptop/PC. Can you
help me figure out how to fix it? I've noticed that my device is lagging and
not performing as it should. I suspect it's due to some of the programs I've
installed. What steps can I take to identify and resolve the problem? Any tips
on optimizing my system's performance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Same issue, in:
Arch/Manjaro 6.6.40-1
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.3.0
kdeconnect.app: 24.05.2
kdeconnect.daemon: 24.05.2

Fixed by running: killall kdeconnectd
mv ~/.config/kdeconnect ~/.config/kdeconnect.bak
and re-running kdeconnect-app

Seems something might have borked the configuration file this most prior update
I did? From KDE Plasma 6.0.3 to 6.0.5?
Either way, it's working flawlessly now.

Can it be related to having a vertical panel? The graphic* linked in the other
bug also seems to have the triangle the other way round than what my problem
is, but maybe here it already flipped. It would be cool if there is any way to
visualize the triangle.
I'm not even sure how I would construct the triangle when moving from the
preview to the taskbar as the taskbar items are no children of the previews and
the amazon solution seems to work by assuming a hierarchy.

OK so more about that with a kernel update and other updates (Qt 6.7.2, kernel
6.8.0-39-generic): I'm no longer getting the corruption - instead I'm getting
the monitors not coming out of sleep. Switching to a different TTY and waiting
for the monitors to wake up and show the terminal does fix it, but I have to
wait for the monitors to show the terminal. This is probably a separate issue
so I'll file it as such, but I can no longer reproduce the corruption.

I should probably clarify though: after switching to the X session, the Wayland
session does work (at least until the dock goes to sleep), so it's something in
initialisation.

Likewise, the Wayland session works fine after plugging in my Steam Deck.

I assume that this is a duplicate of 488238.

Krusader has two concepts of selection:
* cursor (dotted border) selection - always exactly one item - can be changed
with arrow up/down keys
* blue selection - multi selection - can be changed with SHIFT+arrow up/down
keys

I assume this concept suits most users because it has always been like that,
most twin panel file managers have the same concept and not many users complain
about it.

To clarify the specific case:

If "Asymmetric" is activated and "Ignore Date" is activated
and source and target have a file with the same path
then
actual behavior is that synchronizer requests no default action for this file
but expected behavior is that default action is file overwrite from source to
target

The default action in this case was intentionally changed to avoid unwanted
overwriting of files (in case target and source are mixed up), see
https://phabricator.kde.org/D26887 .

It is still possible to have the desired action by selecting all "!=" files and
select "Copy from right to left" in the right-click context menu (but might not
be feasible if there are a lot of files).

I think that the new behavior is very confusing - I could not understand it
before looking into the code and finding the change request.

And I suggest to change it again: (only) if "Asymmetric" and "Ignore Date" is
activated, the default action should be "Copy from right to left" again.

Other opinions?

All actions in the context menu (e.g. "Lock Toolbar Positions") lead to crash.

However, I could fix it in Krusader by replacing
>setXMLFile("krusaderui.rc");
>createGUI(...);
with
>setupGUI(Default, "krusaderui.rc");
and I noticed that setupGUI() must be called with the "ToolBar" flag, otherwise
the very same bug occurs again.

In keditbookmarks
>void KXmlGuiWindow::createGUI(const QString& xmlfile)
is used and I assume that replacing it by
> setupGUI(Defaults, ...)
would fix it here as well.

Because the docs say that the "ToolBar" flag is not mandatory (and that
createGUI() could also be used) I'm moving this to KXMLGui.

[kde] [Bug 490126] New: Keyboards are working in BIOS but not in startup

2024-07-11 Thread Alex
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490126

Bug ID: 490126
Summary: Keyboards are working in BIOS but not in startup
Classification: I don't know
   Product: kde
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Other
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: fewotij...@carspure.com
  Target Milestone: ---

My keyboards are functioning correctly in BIOS, but they stop working during
startup. I can navigate the BIOS settings without any issues, so the hardware
seems fine. However, once the operating system starts loading, the keyboards
become unresponsive. I've tried different USB ports and keyboards, but the
problem persists. It seems to be a software issue or driver problem that is
preventing the keyboards from working during startup.

>EXPECTED RESULT
>Left panel should become active and results shown there.

The expected behaviour is not 100% clear. The current behaviour can be
considered a feature: With one tree view it possible to change directories in
both panels.

We could change it, so that always the panel of the same side as the tree view
is activated and shows the new directory. But then maybe somebody else will
complain about this "unexpected" behaviour.
It would also use a modifier key (e.g. CTRL) while clicking on the directory to
decide which panel is used (default: always same side; with CTRL: always other
side).

Any other opinions or ideas?

2024-07-08 Thread Alex Lowe
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=489945

Bug ID: 489945
Summary: Wayland compositor (sometimes) outputs corrupted video
signal to one of two external monitors
Classification: Plasma
   Product: kwin
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: unspecified
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
***

SUMMARY
When using kwin_wayland and plugging in a USB4 docking station with two UHD
monitors, the video to one of the monitors is often corrupted. Switching to an
x11 display and then back fixes this corruption. (Works fine with Thunderbolt
hardware.)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Boot up and login to kwin_wayland without a docking station attached
2. Detach power from docking station, reattach power. (This is important, as it
seems to change some mode in the docking station - this could indicate that the
bug is in the docking station software - see Additional Information below)
3. Attach a docking station with two 3840x2160 resolution monitors in
DisplayPort mode

OBSERVED RESULT
Corrupted video signal to the monitor designated on the "second" DisplayPort
port

EXPECTED RESULT
Normal video

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE neon 6.0
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.4.0
Qt Version: 6.7.0
Kernel Version: 6.8.0-36-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
Memory: 60.6 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon Graphics
Manufacturer: Framework
Product Name: Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040Series)
System Version: A7
Docking Station: Anker 568 USB Docking Station, product number A8399
(https://www.anker.com/products/a8399?variant=42385578393750)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Workaround: Start an X11 session (even as simply as using Plasma's "switch
user" button) with the dock plugged in

The docking station in question contains a VIA Labs USB4 hub. I've tested the
following hardware combinations:

AMD Framework laptop:
 - Works with X11 or after an X11 session
 - Produces a corrupted signal when the first plugin after the dock goes to
sleep or is powered on.
Intel Framework laptop (12th generation):
 - Works properly with kwin_wayland
 - Works properly with X11
Macbook (M1) running macOS:
  - Works as expected, with known Apple silicon mac limitation of the external
display rendering the same image (but not corrupted)
Steam Deck:
  - Works as expected in desktop mode (which uses X11)

I recognise that this bug may well be somewhere other than kwin_wayland.
However, there appears to be something being done in x11 that works around this
problem until the dock goes to sleep, so I'm hopeful that not only can
kwin_wayland implement this workaround, but that also the expertise here can
help point me to the proper place to file any other relevant bug reports.

[plasmashell] [Bug 489892] New: Icons only Taskbar window previews are too sensitive when the cursor leaves them

2024-07-07 Thread Alex
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=489892

Bug ID: 489892
Summary: Icons only Taskbar window previews are too sensitive
when the cursor leaves them
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.27.5
  Platform: Debian stable
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
Component: Task Manager and Icons-Only Task Manager
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: a...@laxu.de
CC: qydwhotm...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY

When using the icons only taskbar with grouped windows, the previews are very
sensitive about the cursor leaving them for a moment either not being over any
part of the taskbar or previews or touching other icons. I think it would
improve the UX if the delay for switching to the previews of other programs
would be higher.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Hover an icon on the icons-only-taskbar until the previews of the grouped
windows appear.
2. Move with the cursor through the previews, accidentally leave the previews
and touch another icon in the taskbar.
3. The previews are almost instantly hidden and you need to move the cursor
back to the icon of the program you wanted to switch to, wait for the previews
to appear, and then carefully select the right window without the cursor
leaving the previews even for a split second.

I don't know about Total Commander but in Double Commander the behavior is the
same as in Krusader - it only looks different.

Maybe having CTRL+Up/Down could change the (blue) selection to the current
(dotted) cursor selection, so that only one item is (blue) selected. That
would be a valid improvement in my opinion.

Note that the inbuild archive compress/extract functionality

Hello,

I am experiencing this bug regularly too, it looks the same as in recording. It
seems to be happening after some time, I don't change my screen orientation at
all and plasmashell hasn't crashed for me. It might be related to changing the
workspaces/desktops with three-finger-touch gesture, but it might as well not
be related. I have also had it happen after waking my laptop from sleep. I
usually have multiple instances of Okular open.

I can recover normal behavior by zooming in or out with the two-finger-touch
gesture, but over means of zooming don't seem to work.

[krusader] [Bug 486731] Krusader is unable to create thumbnails for pdf and other document/book formats and video formats appear as a static image instead of creating a preview for them

2024-06-18 Thread Alex Bikadorov
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486731

Update: The root cause is that the thumbnailers like ffmpegthumbs shipped in
the distributions are KF6 based and are not compatible with KF5. The best
solution is to port Krusader to KF6 which is currently WIP (see
https://invent.kde.org/utilities/krusader/-/issues/28 ).

So, the bug is valid - there is a defect and cannot be directly be solved by
users. But Krusader needs to be ported to KF6 to fix this.

You're right; for some reason I made this overly complex when I tried to type

A workaround is better than nothing.

Can you reproduce or should I add a screenshot how it looks here?
I have on the tab bar with Plastique theme:
- 1-3 px lightgrey border above inactive tabs and the active tab is connected
to the top border of the other tabs
- Inactive tabs have a gradient with two light greys, the active tab has one
solid lightgrey
- The active tab is slightly higher overlapping the area below

While this is visible when looking at the tab bar directly, it is hard to
intuitively notice when looking at the terminal contents.

SUMMARY
Can't use keyboard to easily select emoji to copy anymore

Prior version of emojier (5.x unsure of my exact version prior to system update
), the initial cursor started in the search bar and tab allowed switching to
the resulting emoji for selection. Right now, I have to

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. press the emojier shortcut (command + .)
2. (notice the cursor isn't assuming search anymore)
3. press Tab twice to get to search and press enter to open search bar
4. type any emoji of your choosing and try to tab into the emoji display area
to select one

OBSERVED RESULT
can't easily use keyboard to select emoji

EXPECTED RESULT
emojier window should remember last used sidebar item selected, and if search,
cursor shouldn't be in the sidebar, but in the search box for easy input. Tab
should allow cursor to move to emoji selector area.

[kwin] [Bug 486432] Wayland: Screen-wide Repaint Triggered by Any Application Change

2024-05-15 Thread Alex Fiestas
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486432

I did some extra testing

This is reproducible with Plasma 6.0.4, stable from distro packages
It is reproducible with just one screen (built-in eDP)

Testcase: Open konsole, place it close to 0,0 and just write a letter. The
expected
damage should be somewhere close to 0x0 and narrow.

Without knowing what I'm doing I've added a few qDebugs in
Compositor::prePaintPass

This might be perfectly normal behavior, just writing it down in case it is of
any help
- The incoming QRegion is always null
- It always obtains the correct  QRegion from layer->delegate()->prePaint();

I added another qDebug in paintPass, damages were ok as well.
I added another in SceneDelegate::paint, here the QRegion finally changes
>From QRegion(4,44 1066x21)
To QRegion(1809,44 1066x21)
which looks about right as well.

I haven't dug deeper, perhaps this is just the paint effect being silly or me
not understanding the paint effect correctly.

[kwin] [Bug 486432] Wayland: Screen-wide Repaint Triggered by Any Application Change

2024-05-04 Thread Alex Fiestas
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486432

Additional info:
I tried to bisect it and went as far as 0c8b3251e5818, beyond that point KWin
either did not compile or did not run.

With that commit I still could reproduce the full repaint in either screen with
any app.

It can be reproduced with any app, not just konsole.

I'm not an expert but as far as I know one of the most important architectural
changes in wayland was that Apps can only operate on local coordinates which
should make it impossible for konsole (or any other app) to send damage events
that include the entire screen.

   Version: master
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

Output of org.kde.KWin.supportInformation

SUMMARY
I believe that it is unnecessary to repaint the entire screen when updating an
application's display. If this is incorrect, I apologize for the added noise.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Enable paint effect
2. Launch konsole
3. type something

OBSERVED RESULT
After every character is drawn, a full display refresh can be observed in the
paint effect

EXPECTED RESULT
Only the konsole modified line should be repainted.

I have not extensively tested behavior, but I think **at least** a message is
required on login if the existing profile cannot be loaded (deleted by user for
example). Just because we copy it to the local destination, does not mean it
won't become unavailable (I had a btrfs meltdown last year for the /home which
is on a separate drive).

[KScreen] [Bug 485555] New: Color profile field becomes unresponsive when previous profile is not accessible

2024-04-14 Thread Gurenko Alex
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48

Bug ID: 48
Summary: Color profile field becomes unresponsive when previous
profile is not accessible
Classification: Plasma
   Product: KScreen
   Version: 6.0.3
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: common
  Assignee: kscreen-bugs-n...@kde.org
  Reporter: agure...@protonmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

A spin off from the https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483700 as an open
issue

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Apply profile from non-local location (nas for example)
2. Remove access to the profile
3. Open Display configuration and check the field

OBSERVED RESULT

Previous profile is not mentioned and not possible to select a new profile as
the whole window becomes unresponsive

EXPECTED RESULT

I believe some message should be shown that the profile is unavailable and it's
removed (actually that should be done when it's attempted to load (on login?)
).

[kde] [Bug 485549] New: Plasma crash and firefox rendering issue on monitor ARC reconnect

2024-04-14 Thread Alex Baldwin
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485549

Bug ID: 485549
Summary: Plasma crash and firefox rendering issue on monitor
ARC reconnect
Classification: I don't know
   Product: kde
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Debian stable
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Keywords: drkonqi
  Severity: crash
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: alexbaldwin2...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

Application: plasmashell (5.27.5)

Qt Version: 5.15.8
Frameworks Version: 5.103.0
Operating System: Linux 6.1.0-13-amd64 x86_64
Windowing System: Wayland
Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)
DrKonqi: 5.27.5 [CoredumpBackend]

-- Information about the crash:
I am using Debian 12 PC as a media center hooked up to my TV directly via HDMI
and audio recievier via HDMI ARC through the TV.

The reciever automatically switches off after about five minutes of no audio
input, and whenever it does, the TV renegotiates the HDMI connection with the
PC. This causes a visual flash combined with the following ill effects: Firefox
will become unresponsive, with only the top left quarter of the window contents
visible, although the entire window decorations are rendered. Attempting to
interact with this Firefox window will result in Firefox hanging.

Turning the audio reciever back on does not fix the issue with Firefox, and it
remains broken until restarting the application. If Firefox is restarted before
the audio reciever is turned back on, this also results in the window becoming
unresponsive. If a video happens to be playing during this time, the
application will hang and the audio is garbled.

Other potentially useful information:
CPU: Intel i5-7500 (4) @ 3.800GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX480
TV: LG 75UR80006LJ (4K60Hz)
Audio Reciever: Sony STRDH790 (in 5.1 input stream configutation)

The crash can be reproduced sometimes.
