Hope this is helpful, this is the server-side log from my attempt to use KRDC
on a Fedora 40 device to connect to KRDP on another Fedora 40 device - mine
appears to be a graphics issue though, and both are Nvidia devices using the
RPMFusion-provided Nvidia drivers (555 series), so this may be a different
issue? Should I log separately?

2024-07-04 Thread John
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=447245

I've been thinking about this...

I think Plasma is misleading users if they set update settings to

Apply System Updates: Immediately

And it only does so "after 15 minutes of idle" (which may never occur!).

When set to "Immediately" it should indeed apply them "Immediately" and not
after XX Minutes of Idle.
Having it "delayed" misleads the user.

So either the idle time is removed or, ideally, a solution like Elias said:
allowing user to set it manually (to, e.g.: 0min, 15min, 30 min) - where the
15min could be the default value...

SUMMARY
Logging out from KDE/Plasma/Wayland using the desktop mouse right-click and

I have unchecked the 'Logout Screen' option in the system settings.
My '~/.config/ksmserverrc' file shows 'confirmLogout=false'.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. When logged in, right-click on the desktop background and select 'Leave...'
2. The logout confirmation window shows.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
The logout confirmation window appears. Selecting logout from this does log out

and returned to the SDDM login screen (I don't have auto-login upon logout
enabled).

[valgrind] [Bug 381326] recognize re-convergent fanout before complaining about Uninitialized

2024-06-23 Thread John Reiser
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=381326

This comment is to confirm that the bug still exists today 2024-06-24,
7 years after original filing.

Actually there are two bugs:

1) In the True branch after a test for Equality (==) then the Defined bits
propagate
in both directions. Some bits which previously were Uninit may become
dynamically
Defined because they are equal to a Defined bit in the other operand. Thus
dynamic
Equality is NOT necessarily a Read-Only operation with respect to the
Defined bits for each operand. (Of course if all input bits in both operands
are Defined then there is no issue, and no accounting bits change.)

2) When control-flow paths converge at run time, then the Defined bits
after the Join become equal to the AND of the corresponding Defined bits
for each variable along any path that enters the Join.

shows 'No unread notifications'. clicking on some other window (konsole,
firefox etc) then causes the notification window to disappear.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run 'konsole', then I configured konsole (from the 'Settings' tab at the top
of the konsole window) to show popup notifications for 'Bell in Focused
Session'.
2. Use keyboard down-arrow key to go to bottom of konsole, and repeat a couple
of times to get multiple popups.
3. On panel the Notifications icon should have appeared (indicating there are
unread notifications. Close each notification using the 'Close' icon. After the
last one is closed the Notification window remains saying 'No unread
notifications' until the mouse is clicked elsewhere.

OBSERVED RESULT
See summary above.

EXPECTED RESULT
The notification window should automatically disappear as it did under Plasma
5.

What has changed is very large apps such as qemu-user-* which depend on
dozens of "random" libraries, and the system
builders/maintainers/administrators
who tired of their own version of "dll hell" due to dependency tracking,
and the users (including "systematic" users with scripts) who got tired of
multi-second initialization of all those shared libraries; all gained new
appreciation
for -static builds of ET_EXEC (no shared libraries at all!) which initialize
in a flash
and have robust configuration (none!) for end users. Disk space is cheap for
many
such users; time is not. qemu-user has grown into a predictable evolution which
avoids nearly all "security" incidents which otherwise might argue for using
shared libraries.

But then "corner case" users of qemu-user-* (etc), the users who just might
find a bug or two,
discover that memcheck is much less useful. Gdb and debuginfo have no trouble
identifying malloc/free/sbrk+sys_brk etc., but memcheck does not recognize
them.
Re-building the app from source (and avoiding -static+ET_EXEC) takes hours of
time
and almost 10 GB of disk space, uses 4 different build systems (make, cmake,
meson, ninja)
and two runtime support systems (Go-lang and C-lang).

Being highly motivated for the particular case of qemu-mips*-static, I have
developed
binary patches that zero the new region of {_dl_early_allocate, malloc} +
{expanding sbrk/sys_brk}.
This is not as good as proper memcheck accounting, but it suits my purpose
of finding uninit local variables in what would otherwise be a blizzard of
Uninit complaints
caused by memcheck not recognizing when to mark bytes from sys_brk as Defined.

Without the patches, memcheck finds
==375110== ERROR SUMMARY: 9646 errors from 125 contexts (suppressed: 0 from

Memcheck should find some way to avoid relying on SIGRT32, perhaps using
pipefs.

(In reply to Mark Wielaard from comment #4)

> So it seems reasonable for memcheck to assume the area exposed by brk() is
> undefined.

That assumption is incorrect for new pages on Linux, and there are applications
that rely on the actual behavior, which is that on new pages all bytes
are zero. For instance: qemu relies on this to hold data that tracks threads.

> But if the pages already existed and brk() just gives them back those
> aren't guaranteed to be all-zero but can contain whatever was there before.

On Linux this is only partially true. If __cur_brk (the top of the sys_brk()
region) varies within the same page, then the bytes retain their values. If
__cur_brk decreases enough so that one or more whole pages are not contained in
the allocated address space, then those pages are removed from the address
space, and a subsequent sys_brk() which increases __cur_brk to include such
addresses does assign new pages, and they are guaranteed to be zero.
If an increasing sys_brk() would overlap with a different VMA (Linux-internal
Virtual Memory Area) that already is assigned for some other purpose, then that
sys_brk() fails and returns an error value.
So for any successful sys_brk(), then new pages are guaranteed to be zero.
Memcheck certainly knows which pages are new, and should mark then as Defined.

[valgrind] [Bug 487862] memcheck does not believe that bytes on new pages are Defined by brk() system call

2024-06-06 Thread John Reiser
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487862

(In reply to Paul Floyd from comment #1)
> brk() is fairly old, removed from posix accordingly to the Linux manpage.
> Increasingly I see it getting removed from platforms.

In this case "old" means good, well-documented, well-debugged, reliable.
Please name explicitly some platforms which are removing brk(), and their
typical usage environments.

The brk() system call has been present in most *nix-like systems since 1970,
which is more than 50 years. brk() is present in Linux today, and Linux
has a strong policy and implementation record for backwards compatibility
of system calls; brk() will not disappear from Linux anytime soon.

brk() is particularly useful during process startup when a call to malloc()
might not yet be supported;. A programming language runtime can
use brk() via an inline system call. See _dl_early_allocate() in glibc, for
example.

brk() and sbrk() enable an easy implementation of mark() and release()
for Pascal run-time support.

brk() is quite handy for use by other in-process emulators, which must
deal with arbitrary mmap() anyway. For instance, qemu relies on brk() and
sbrk().

brk() is multi-thread safe and async-signal safe without requiring
any user-mode locks. It can be used safely in a signal handler.
Thread managers may rely on brk() regardless of the implementation of malloc().

[KClock] [Bug 487989] New: Stopwatch: Move Reset button to main panel

2024-06-03 Thread John Veness
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487989

Bug ID: 487989
Summary: Stopwatch: Move Reset button to main panel
Classification: Applications
   Product: KClock
   Version: 24.05.0
  Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR

Screenshot of current layout on desktop

SUMMARY
When wishing to reset the stopwatch, the eye naturally looks for a reset button
alongside the current Start/Pause/Resume and Lap buttons. Instead, it's up
there in the top bar, which is momentarily jarring for the user.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run kclock
2. Click on Stopwatch tab
3. Start the stopwatch
4. Wish to reset the stopwatch
5. Look for the Reset button

EXPECTED RESULT
Reset button is close to the Start/Pause/Resume button and Lap button.

OBSERVED RESULT
Reset button is a bit out of the way, up at the top.

Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 620

Product Name: HP ProBook 450 G4

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The other tabs have "Add/New" buttons in the top bar, which makes sense for
those functions. Maybe for symmetry there could be the ability to have multiple
independent stopwatches, and so have a "New stopwatch" button at the top? But I
think it would be fine for there to just be no buttons up there.

Many thanks for reading :)

assembly-language test program for brk() system call

SUMMARY
On Linux, when the brk() system call adds new pages to the address space, then
those pages are guaranteed to be all-zero, but memcheck thinks the bytes are
Undefined.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Build the attached short assembly-language program brk-test.S for x86_64.
The program finds the next page boundary at or above "the .brk",
then uses system call brk() to append 345 bytes to "the .brk".
Linux must add one entire page, and guarantees that the page is all-zero.
2. Run under valgrind(memcheck) and note the complaint about Uninit value.
3. Comment-out the "jmp no_clear" instruction, re-build and re-run.
4. Note that the complaint disapears.
5. Use a debugger to single-step the two programs, examining memory to convince
yourself that the code to zero the added address space on a new page is
effectively a no-op.

OBSERVED RESULT
Step 2:
$ valgrind --track-origins=yes ./brk-test

==5737==  Uninitialised value was created
==5737==at 0x401039: ??? (brk-test.S:38)   ## the third brk() syscall

Step 4: Note no complaint from memcheck
$ valgrind --track-origins=yes ./brk-test
==5768== Using Valgrind-3.23.0 and LibVEX; rerun with -h for copyright info
==5768== Command: ./brk-test

[www.kde.org] [Bug 486451] New: Inqlude link in footer

2024-05-02 Thread John Veness
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=486451

Bug ID: 486451
   Summary: Inqlude link in footer
Classification: Websites
   Product: www.kde.org
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kde-...@kde.org
  Reporter: john@pelago.org.uk
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
There is a link in the footer of most KDE sites to "Inqlude Documentation"
<https://inqlude.org/> but that site seems to redirect to develop.kde.org now.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Visit https://kde.org/
2. Scroll to bottom
3. Click on "Inqlude Documentation"

OBSERVED RESULT
Redirected to https://develop.kde.org/ with no obvious documentation or
anything about Inqlude.

EXPECTED RESULT
Some documentation about Inqlude.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I think Inqlude is a dead project now so the link should probably just be
removed. If in fact it is still alive, the link should go to something specific
about Inqlude, not just to the top-level of develop.kde.org.

"working as expected". Thank you for your time and consideration!

I've also wanted this functionality, and I would add it would be good to be
able to temporarily stop outgoing communication from Android to desktop too.
For example, my son was temporarily using my laptop to do some homework, but I
didn't want him to see notifications that were happening on my phone. I
force-quitted the Android app, but a proper method to pause communications
would be useful.

[Spectacle] [Bug 485988] [Feature request] Escape while selecting region doesn't quit, but brings up main window

2024-04-27 Thread John
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485988

Wow, thank you for a very thoughtful answer.

It seems that I can do what I wanted using the -rb flags. I had followed the
entry in the .desktop file for RectangularRegionScreenShot, which is just -r
(which now I look closer actually does seem to instantly dismiss from the
Plasma shortcut, but not from the command line!)

So I don't think it's absolutely necessary to change it, since there is indeed
a combination of arguments which results in an instant-dismiss on Escape.
Though perhaps if the shortcut via the desktop file and the command line did
the same thing, it would be slightly more intiutive (or is is it that when
launching from the desktop file, the "open the GUI on cancel" is what is
supposed to happen and doesn't?)

SUMMARY

There is an option to "Quit after manual Save or Copy". However, if you cancel
with Escape, it doesn't exit - you get the main window. This is (very slightly)
annoying when you go to take a screenshot and find you need to adjust the
window a little first, as you have to double-escape to get out.

There is already a way to take the whole screen (Enter), so there seems no need
for Escape to do the same.

I think it makes sense that this setting follows the "Quit after manual Save or
Copy" (i.e. "Quit after manual Save, Copy or Cancel". But if there's a use case
for getting Spectacle appearing after Escape that I'm not sensitive to, it
could be a separate config item?

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Configure: "Close on manual save copy"
2. Press "PrintSc" (or whatever trigger shortcut)
3. Optionally draw a rectangle.
4. Change your mind about whether you want a screenshot
5. Press Esc.

OBSERVED RESULT

See the Spectacle window pop up

EXPECTED RESULT

Dismiss Spectacle to adjust the window in question and try again.

I think the original bug report is now fixed, as there is now a "Send

notification is hidden. Automatic clipboard sending for Android >= 10 should
probably be discussed elsewhere.

[plasmashell] [Bug 485378] Incorrect launch feedback for pinned apps in traditional Task Manager

2024-04-12 Thread John Veness
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485378

I've just noticed what should have been obvious to me, which is that the apps
that show the incorrect (icon-only) launch feedback are those that are pinned
to the task manager. So if I unpin Konsole, the incorrect launch feedback
doesn't occur, and if I pin KCalc, the incorrect launch feedback does occur. I
have changed the bug title to match this.

Note that the launch feedback problem occurs however the app is launched,
whether from the Application Launcher or from the pinned icon.

[plasmashell] [Bug 485378] New: Incorrect launch feedback for some apps (e.g. Dolphin, Konsole) in traditional Task Manager

2024-04-11 Thread John Veness
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485378

Bug ID: 485378
Summary: Incorrect launch feedback for some apps (e.g. Dolphin,
Konsole) in traditional Task Manager
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.0.3
  Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
Component: Task Manager and Icons-Only Task Manager
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: john@pelago.org.uk
CC: qydwhotm...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
Since the Plasma 6 upgrade, when using the traditional Task Manager (not
Icons-Only Task Manager), when launching some apps, the launch feedback is just
an icon, not an icon with text beside it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start a Plasma 6 session
2. Ensure using Task Manager (not Icons-Only Task Manager)
3. Launch Dolphin

OBSERVED RESULT
The launch feedback for Dolphin is just the Dolphin icon with the rotation
circle over it.

EXPECTED RESULT
The launch feedback for Dolphin is the Dolphin icon with the rotation circle
over it with the word Dolphin to the right of it.

[kwin] [Bug 460437] Show launchers for favorite applications in Overview effect

2024-04-11 Thread John
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460437

(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #5)
> We have three practical options for how to do this, if we want to do it:

> 2. Expose Kicker/Kickoff favorites to Overview
> - Pros: those favorites are global in scope, matching the scope of Overview
> - Cons: would require making Activities a dependency; see Bug 449919.
> Possibly stuff from Plasma's Kicker model would also need to be broken out

> depending on Plasma

> I think option #2 would be best if we want to do this. #1 seems undesirable
> and #3 seems both undesirable and infeasible.

I personally think #2 would be great, specially if, once at it, Bug 449919
would be included as well (if indeed the plan is keeping activities).

>From a user perspective, the Overview could be a go-to to access and manage
anything desktop-tasks-related.
It would also be a nice way to expose the user more to Activities (yeah, i
don't think they're exposed enough!)

However, beside all the possible technical challenge this may represent, there
is also the risk of putting "too much noise" in the overview effect (not so
much from the launchers, but activities should be well thought on how they will
be presented - i remember i've seen some nice mockups that don't take much
space/noise).

... all this should be optional (naturally) ...

Rather than an overlay like web browsers use (at the bottom of the window), I
think it would be OK to show a tooltip with the link destination when hovering

[plasmashell] [Bug 484871] New: Make it easier to revert to old default wallpaper after a Plasma upgrade

2024-04-01 Thread John Veness
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484871

Bug ID: 484871
Summary: Make it easier to revert to old default wallpaper
after a Plasma upgrade
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.0.3
  Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Image Wallpaper
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: john@pelago.org.uk
CC: notm...@gmail.com, qydwhotm...@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: 1.0

SUMMARY
A recent openSUSE Tumbleweed upgrade changed from Plasma 5.27 to Plasma 6.0.
With that came a new wallpaper, which is fine. However, I couldn't find an easy
way to revert to the previous default wallpaper.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Be running Plasma 5.27
2. Upgrade to Plasma 6.0
3. Notice wallpaper has changed
4. Right-click on Desktop and choose "Configure Desktop and Wallpaper"

OBSERVED RESULT
No entry for the previous wallpaper.

EXPECTED RESULT
An entry for the previous wallpaper.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240329
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
Qt Version: 6.6.3
Kernel Version: 6.8.1-1-default (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 620
Manufacturer: HP
Product Name: HP ProBook 450 G4

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I did eventually find the old wallpaper manually, but it was tricky! I had to
search the KDE Store for "mountain" and eventually found what I think was what
I had before (https://store.kde.org/p/2134894).

Note that I don't mind that the default wallpaper changes with a major Plasma
upgrade. I just think there should be a mechanism in the upgrade to "backup"
(probably the wrong term) the previous wallpaper during an upgrade, so it's
easy to revert to it, using the normal user interface.

For me personally, an HP OfficeJet using the hpaio device type. And that may
very well be true, that Skanpage is interacting more directly with the SANE
backend. FWIW simple-scan doesn't seem to reset in the same way, but might not
be directly interacting with SANE while changing individual preferences in the
same way as Skanpage?

[frameworks-bluez-qt] [Bug 480653] Updating to support LE Audio and Auracast

2024-03-26 Thread John Schulz
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480653

Hello,

Quick update; I've got a pair of LE Audio earbuds to see how KDE currently
handles it. Overall, it's pretty easy thanks to the great work of BlueZ and
PipeWire under the hood. Playback was hit or miss but Nix only has BlueZ 5.72
and it seems that most of the present issue are fixed in 5.73. That being said,
there is still ways that we can enhance the experience. First being the
discovery of BLEA devices. I think a check mark button should be added into the
discover menus in BlueDevil. This would add PACS to the discovery filter which
ensures only BLEA devices show up. This will be crucial since many devices will
have both LE and Classic audio for the next few years and they don't always
distinguish in their names. Currently, I know that I am connecting via LE Audio
because I set BlueZ to only LE Bluetooth. This is not ideal for legacy devices
wand should be avoided. I have other ideas for improvements but let's start
with this one. If you have any objections or concerns, please raise them.

Thanks!

A vertical task bar is a good way to illustrate the change, and changing the
width of that is probably easier as a reproduction method than my "open
multiple windows until you see the problem" method.

Do you know what was the minimum vertical task bar width that would still show
the window titles in Plasma 5?

Possibly related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484283 . I expect if
you make your taskbar wider, the names will appear. It looks to me like Plasma

2024-03-22 Thread John Veness

Bug ID: 484283
Summary: Task Manager threshold to switch to icons-only too
soon in Plasma 6
Classification: Plasma
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 6.0.2
  Platform: openSUSE

Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal

KDE 5 behaviour

SUMMARY
When using Task Manager (not Icons-Only Task Manager) and opening many windows
(with no grouping), the point where it switches from showing the icon and the
window name to just showing the icon is too soon in Plasma 6, compared to
Plasma 5.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
In both Plasma 5 and Plasma 6:
1. Choose Task Manager from the Alternatives popup
2. Open multiple windows
3. Count how many you can open before the window name disappears from the task
manager buttons

OBSERVED RESULT
The number of windows you can open in Plasma 6 before it drops the window name
from the task manager buttons is less than in Plasma 5. (The actual numbers
will depend on screen resolution etc.)

EXPECTED RESULT
The number of windows you can open in Plasma 6 before it drops the window name
from the task manager buttons is the same as in Plasma 5.

ALL IN ONE: jpg, jxl, webp, png wide gamut, png16bit and avif from this 16bit
png - all in one zip to test thumbnails and displaying. Logo must be visabe on
the red. No logo=fail. No thumbnail in Dolphin=fail. No thumbnail in
Gwenview=fail. Thumbail has no logo (only red)=fail. I also add 16bit "normal"
PNG, because Dolphin fails to display thumbnail for 16 bit PNG (8-bit is OK).
All necesarry libraries are installed on my part. I also add one "normal" avif
file made from this png, beacuse Dolphin cannot display thumb for this avif
either. (please note that Gwenview can display both "normal" avif and "normal"
PNG thumbnails without problem, but Dolphin fails). Now you have all files for

evererything E V E R Y T H I N G in Kate makes no diffreence. Still no Polish
quotes. This means no Polish is set, but its on Eglish despite me being able to
type the following: zażółć żółtą jaźń. "This qotatation is wrong". Setting
evertyhing OK in Kate and it still in English. It shows PL everywhere i set it
up, but for example in LibreOffice Writer when I chose PL , I got proper
quotations, Polish ones not English ones. THE SAME FONT. This concludes that
Kate DOES NOT respect the settings. It just mean I can type the so called
diacritical signs/letters:
żźćół but that's it. I need full language support so it means we don't have "
at the beginning of quotations. This upper quote is a thte bottom in PL (just
like in LibreOffice) and the last is " the upper one (just like in English).
This is an easy way to recognize if the the software obeys the language set. LO
obeys. Kate does not. It kind of makes me feel discriminated. You wouldn't do
it for a FR or DE.
