[Discover] [Bug 447245] Auto updates do not work
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=447245 --- Comment #16 from John --- I've been thinking about this... I think Plasma is misleading users if they set update settings to Apply System Updates: Immediately And it only does so "after 15 minutes of idle" (which may never occur!). When set to "Immediately" it should indeed apply them "Immediately" and not after XX Minutes of Idle. Having it "delayed" misleads the user. So either the idle time is removed or, ideally, a solution like Elias said: allowing user to set it manually (to, e.g.: 0min, 15min, 30 min) - where the 15min could be the default value... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[valgrind] [Bug 381326] recognize re-convergent fanout before complaining about Uninitialized
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=381326 --- Comment #11 from John Reiser --- This comment is to confirm that the bug still exists today 2024-06-24, 7 years after original filing. Actually there are two bugs: 1) In the True branch after a test for Equality (==) then the Defined bits propagate in both directions. Some bits which previously were Uninit may become dynamically Defined because they are equal to a Defined bit in the other operand. Thus dynamic Equality is NOT necessarily a Read-Only operation with respect to the Defined bits for each operand. (Of course if all input bits in both operands are Defined then there is no issue, and no accounting bits change.) 2) When control-flow paths converge at run time, then the Defined bits after the Join become equal to the AND of the corresponding Defined bits for each variable along any path that enters the Join. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[valgrind] [Bug 487862] memcheck does not believe that bytes on new pages are Defined by brk() system call
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487862 --- Comment #8 from John Reiser --- (In reply to Mark Wielaard from comment #6) > BTW it seems this whole discussion is duplicated in the comments of > memcheck/mc_main.c mc_post_clo_init () >// - The current inaccuracy has caused maybe one complaint in seven > years(?) >// - Relying on the zeroed-ness of whole brk'd pages is pretty grotty... I >// doubt most programmers know the above information. >// So I'm not terribly unhappy with marking it as undefined. --njn. > > Which was written in 2009. So maybe times have changed since then. But I > don't really remember any false positive report about this. What has changed is very large apps such as qemu-user-* which depend on dozens of "random" libraries, and the system builders/maintainers/administrators who tired of their own version of "dll hell" due to dependency tracking, and the users (including "systematic" users with scripts) who got tired of multi-second initialization of all those shared libraries; all gained new appreciation for -static builds of ET_EXEC (no shared libraries at all!) which initialize in a flash and have robust configuration (none!) for end users. Disk space is cheap for many such users; time is not. qemu-user has grown into a predictable evolution which avoids nearly all "security" incidents which otherwise might argue for using shared libraries. But then "corner case" users of qemu-user-* (etc), the users who just might find a bug or two, discover that memcheck is much less useful. Gdb and debuginfo have no trouble identifying malloc/free/sbrk+sys_brk etc., but memcheck does not recognize them. Re-building the app from source (and avoiding -static+ET_EXEC) takes hours of time and almost 10 GB of disk space, uses 4 different build systems (make, cmake, meson, ninja) and two runtime support systems (Go-lang and C-lang). Being highly motivated for the particular case of qemu-mips*-static, I have developed binary patches that zero the new region of {_dl_early_allocate, malloc} + {expanding sbrk/sys_brk}. [valgrind] [Bug 487862] memcheck does not believe that bytes on new pages are Defined by brk() system call
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487862 --- Comment #5 from John Reiser --- (In reply to Mark Wielaard from comment #4) > So it seems reasonable for memcheck to assume the area exposed by brk() is > undefined. That assumption is incorrect for new pages on Linux, and there are applications that rely on the actual behavior, which is that on new pages all bytes are zero. For instance: qemu relies on this to hold data that tracks threads. > But if the pages already existed and brk() just gives them back those > aren't guaranteed to be all-zero but can contain whatever was there before. On Linux this is only partially true. If __cur_brk (the top of the sys_brk() region) varies within the same page, then the bytes retain their values. If __cur_brk decreases enough so that one or more whole pages are not contained in the allocated address space, then those pages are removed from the address space, and a subsequent sys_brk() which increases __cur_brk to include such addresses does assign new pages, and they are guaranteed to be zero. If an increasing sys_brk() would overlap with a different VMA (Linux-internal Virtual Memory Area) that already is assigned for some other purpose, then that sys_brk() fails and returns an error value. So for any successful sys_brk(), then new pages are guaranteed to be zero. Memcheck certainly knows which pages are new, and should mark then as Defined. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[valgrind] [Bug 487862] memcheck does not believe that bytes on new pages are Defined by brk() system call
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=487862 --- Comment #2 from John Reiser --- (In reply to Paul Floyd from comment #1) > brk() is fairly old, removed from posix accordingly to the Linux manpage. > Increasingly I see it getting removed from platforms. In this case "old" means good, well-documented, well-debugged, reliable. Please name explicitly some platforms which are removing brk(), and their typical usage environments. The brk() system call has been present in most *nix-like systems since 1970, which is more than 50 years. brk() is present in Linux today, and Linux has a strong policy and implementation record for backwards compatibility of system calls; brk() will not disappear from Linux anytime soon. brk() is particularly useful during process startup when a call to malloc() might not yet be supported;. A programming language runtime can use brk() via an inline system call. See _dl_early_allocate() in glibc, for example. brk() and sbrk() enable an easy implementation of mark() and release() for Pascal run-time support. brk() is quite handy for use by other in-process emulators, which must deal with arbitrary mmap() anyway. For instance, qemu relies on brk() and sbrk(). brk() is multi-thread safe and async-signal safe without requiring any user-mode locks. It can be used safely in a signal handler. Thread managers may rely on brk() regardless of the implementation of malloc(). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Build the attached short assembly-language program brk-test.S for x86_64. The program finds the next page boundary at or above "the .brk", then uses system call brk() to append 345 bytes to "the .brk". Linux must add one entire page, and guarantees that the page is all-zero. 2. Run under valgrind(memcheck) and note the complaint about Uninit value. 3. Comment-out the "jmp no_clear" instruction, re-build and re-run. 4. Note that the complaint disapears. 5. [kdeconnect] [Bug 474252] [feature][privacy] temporarily suspend outgoing communication to paired devices
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474252 John Veness changed: What|Removed |Added CC||john@pelago.org.uk --- Comment #2 from John Veness --- I've also wanted this functionality, and I would add it would be good to be able to temporarily stop outgoing communication from Android to desktop too. For example, my son was temporarily using my laptop to do some homework, but I didn't want him to see notifications that were happening on my phone. I force-quitted the Android app, but a proper method to pause communications would be useful. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
[Spectacle] [Bug 485988] [Feature request] Escape while selecting region doesn't quit, but brings up main window
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485988 --- Comment #2 from John --- Wow, thank you for a very thoughtful answer. It seems that I can do what I wanted using the -rb flags. I had followed the entry in the .desktop file for RectangularRegionScreenShot, which is just -r (which now I look closer actually does seem to instantly dismiss from the Plasma shortcut, but not from the command line!) So I don't think it's absolutely necessary to change it, since there is indeed a combination of arguments which results in an instant-dismiss on Escape. Though perhaps if the shortcut via the desktop file and the command line did the same thing, it would be slightly more intiutive (or is is it that when launching from the desktop file, the "open the GUI on cancel" is what is supposed to happen and doesn't?) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[Spectacle] [Bug 485988] New: [Feature request] Escape while selecting region doesn't quit, but brings up main window
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485988 Bug ID: 485988 Summary: [Feature request] Escape while selecting region doesn't quit, but brings up main window Classification: Applications Product: Spectacle Version: 24.02.2 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: REPORTED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: General Assignee: noaha...@gmail.com Reporter: john.j.be...@gmail.com CC: k...@david-redondo.de Target Milestone: --- SUMMARY There is an option to "Quit after manual Save or Copy". However, if you cancel with Escape, it doesn't exit - you get the main window. This is (very slightly) annoying when you go to take a screenshot and find you need to adjust the window a little first, as you have to double-escape to get out. There is already a way to take the whole screen (Enter), so there seems no need for Escape to do the same. I think it makes sense that this setting follows the "Quit after manual Save or Copy" (i.e. "Quit after manual Save, Copy or Cancel". But if there's a use case for getting Spectacle appearing after Escape that I'm not sensitive to, it could be a separate config item? STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Configure: "Close on manual save copy" 2. Press "PrintSc" (or whatever trigger shortcut) 3. Optionally draw a rectangle. 4. Change your mind about whether you want a screenshot 5. Press Esc. OBSERVED RESULT See the Spectacle window pop up EXPECTED RESULT Dismiss Spectacle to adjust the window in question and try again. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=460437 --- Comment #6 from John --- (In reply to Nate Graham from comment #5) > We have three practical options for how to do this, if we want to do it: > 2. Expose Kicker/Kickoff favorites to Overview > - Pros: those favorites are global in scope, matching the scope of Overview > - Cons: would require making Activities a dependency; see Bug 449919. > Possibly stuff from Plasma's Kicker model would also need to be broken out > into a non-Plasma library so that Overview would use it without formally > depending on Plasma > I think option #2 would be best if we want to do this. #1 seems undesirable > and #3 seems both undesirable and infeasible. I personally think #2 would be great, specially if, once at it, Bug 449919 would be included as well (if indeed the plan is keeping activities). >From a user perspective, the Overview could be a go-to to access and manage anything desktop-tasks-related. It would also be a nice way to expose the user more to Activities (yeah, i don't think they're exposed enough!) However, beside all the possible technical challenge this may represent, there is also the risk of putting "too much noise" in the overview effect (not so much from the launchers, but activities should be well thought on how they will be presented - i remember i've seen some nice mockups that don't take much space/noise). ... all this should be optional (naturally) ... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[frameworks-bluez-qt] [Bug 480653] Updating to support LE Audio and Auracast
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480653 --- Comment #1 from John Schulz --- Hello, Quick update; I've got a pair of LE Audio earbuds to see how KDE currently handles it. Overall, it's pretty easy thanks to the great work of BlueZ and PipeWire under the hood. Playback was hit or miss but Nix only has BlueZ 5.72 and it seems that most of the present issue are fixed in 5.73. That being said, there is still ways that we can enhance the experience. First being the discovery of BLEA devices. I think a check mark button should be added into the discover menus in BlueDevil. This would add PACS to the discovery filter which ensures only BLEA devices show up. This will be crucial since many devices will have both LE and Classic audio for the next few years and they don't always distinguish in their names. Currently, I know that I am connecting via LE Audio because I set BlueZ to only LE Bluetooth. This is not ideal for legacy devices wand should be avoided. I have other ideas for improvements but let's start with this one. If you have any objections or concerns, please raise them. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=476884 --- Comment #5 from John --- I did pacman -Syyuu, cleaned cache in ~ and the upgrade to KDE6 started the hell for me and the thumbnails and photos. Maybe my Dolphin from KDE 6 does not see some .so ? I have no idea. Since all worked in KDE5. [gwenview] [Bug 483566] Gwenview Cannot Display WEBP Images That Are Wide Gamut (P3)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483566 --- Comment #3 from John --- Created attachment 167523 --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=167523=edit All Types of Photos for Testing Dolphin Thumbnailing ang Gwenview Thumbs and Displaying ALL IN ONE: jpg, jxl, webp, png wide gamut, png16bit and avif from this 16bit png - all in one zip to test thumbnails and displaying. Logo must be visabe on the red. No logo=fail. No thumbnail in Dolphin=fail. No thumbnail in Gwenview=fail. Thumbail has no logo (only red)=fail. I also add 16bit "normal" PNG, because Dolphin fails to display thumbnail for 16 bit PNG (8-bit is OK). All necesarry libraries are installed on my part. I also add one "normal" avif file made from this png, beacuse Dolphin cannot display thumb for this avif either. (please note that Gwenview can display both "normal" avif and "normal" PNG thumbnails without problem, but Dolphin fails). Now you have all files for testing thumbnails and displaying. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[kate] [Bug 483650] Kate Does NOT Respect/Ignores The Language Set Langueage for Text
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483650 --- Comment #3 from John --- (In reply to Christoph Cullmann from comment #2) > Needs more feedback. Not a Polish language when you have uppper-upper quotes. Polish is "lower-upper". There's no such thing as "upper-upper" quotes. Setting evererything E V E R Y T H I N G in Kate makes no diffreence. Still no Polish quotes. This means no Polish is set, but its on Eglish despite me being able to type the following: zażółć żółtą jaźń. "This qotatation is wrong". Setting evertyhing OK in Kate and it still in English. It shows PL everywhere i set it up, but for example in LibreOffice Writer when I chose PL , I got proper quotations, Polish ones not English ones. THE SAME FONT. This concludes that Kate DOES NOT respect the settings. It just mean I can type the so called diacritical signs/letters: żźćół but that's it. I need full language support so it means we don't have " at the beginning of quotations. This upper quote is a thte bottom in PL (just like in LibreOffice) and the last is " the upper one (just like in English). This is an easy way to recognize if the the software obeys the language set. LO obeys. Kate does not. It kind of makes me feel discriminated. You wouldn't do it for a FR or DE. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
