Now on Kubuntu 16.04 and still no improvement, the bug prevails:

If I click on a larger folder, the following is logged by Akonadi - each line
taking close to one second to appear (Remember: the Dovecot IMAP server runs on
localhost in my case and the system uses a Samsung 840 EVO SSD), and
"Receiving" is done twice, as you can see above, before kMail actually
finishes:

Version|4.13|GIT (master)

I bumped the "version" to "GIT Master" hoping to increase visibility of this
bug. I'm currently at Akonadi 15.08.3 and kMail 5.0.3, but could not select
those versions from the drop down list...

In KDE 4.13 and below, the IMAP sync performance was always great!

The first appeared in KDE 4.14, has been around ever since and even seems to
get worse rather than better.

Any news on this issue?

Create an email account, add 10k of mails -> akonadi/kmail stop working.

To me, this is a major issue. Any web client can handle this many emails.
Thunderbird works fine on the same account while kmail doesn't.
