It suits as expected as a combination with delay, in order to allow a right-click operation previous to defining the desired frame. It seems to me, it couldn't be a better alternative on X11. Let's keep present report close if it suits you as well, despite the solution doesn't answer the original requirement, which was to grab it automatically. You set a 2-second delay, open the context menu, and then it will be captured using whatever capture mode you're using. "Window under cursor" is ideal for this.
