That made me reconsider the whole thing, and now I realize taking repeated rectangular screenshots of the same area is a rather more niche usecase than I first imagined. What's the the existing bug white rectangle is. If you preferred the old change, you can go back to it by showing Spectacle's settings window changing the value of "Remember selected area" to either "Never" or "Until Spectacle is closed". I didn't agree with this change, but a bunch of other people did, so I didn't try to veto it. For now I'm closing this bug report since it was an intentional change.
