At the moment we are holding up to 50 image objects in the queue for the face engine, which can be many gigabytes depending on the image size. When I first reported this it had scanned about 20% of my collection and now it's at 80%. I looked at a few of the debug logs when it was first happening and it was not the case that the same images kept cropping up.
