Glad to hear it. FWIW, KDE4 has been deprecated and unsupported for years.

Nate,

Please excuse: I did not try to use the dolphin search options for a long time.
Today I typed balooctl status: 
running
After that I looked into dolphin and voila, it is working now.
Possibly there was an update by Suse in the meantime. Anyway this is no longer
an issue although I cannot  tell how it has been solved.
