As far as I know, when the user/programmer community is split over the usability of a feature, what's better than setting an option to achieve "consensus" in the free software world (especially since it is technically possible)? AFAIK the consensus so far is that we generally want wider tabs, but we don't want them to span the whole width of the window because this has usability disadvantages (e.g. requires a lot of mouse movement to close multiple tabs in a row).
