I have observed that if I add -m (muted), it runs fine. Perhaps this will provide a hint to where the problem is. The freeze is so bad that my only option is to power down. Raspberry Pi 400. Using original SD (believed to be Raspian NOOBS) ran apt update/upgrade before I tried to get gcompris (and after). One is set to Headphones and the other to Analog Output. Neither has another option under the drop-down menu. The sound widget on the task bar is also set to Analogue.
