These graphical glitches are caused by bugs in the NVIDIA proprietary driver for that GPU. It never happened in the X11 session (I use standby regularly and have also switched back to X11 already), just in wayland. While trying to "provoke" the issue (setting PC to standby) I also managed to get no screen at all after waking the PC, not even the mouse was visible. In the second attempt I managed to get the issue I'm talking about, but it seems like not all letters are missing, just most of them, for example "8" and "f" work fine, but most others don't.
