[valgrind] [Bug 476331] New: clean up generated/distributed filter scripts

2023-10-30 Thread Mark Wielaard
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=476331

Bug ID: 476331
Summary: clean up generated/distributed filter scripts
Classification: Developer tools
   Product: valgrind
   Version: 3.22 GIT
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: jsew...@acm.org
  Reporter: m...@klomp.org
  Target Milestone: ---

https://sourceforge.net/p/valgrind/mailman/message/49958270/

There are a couple of filter scripts generated for configure.ac but also
included in the dist tar ball.

drd/tests/filter_error_count
drd/tests/filter_error_summary
drd/tests/filter_stderr
lter_stderr_and_thread_no_and_offset
drd/tests/filter_thread_no
drd/tests/filter_xml_and_thread_no
gdbserver_tests/filter_gdb
filter_memcheck_monitor
gdbserver_tests/filter_stderr
gdbserver_tests/filter_vgdb
helgrind/tests/filter_stderr
memcheck/tests/filter_dw4
memcheck/tests/filter_overlaperror
memcheck/tests/filter_stderr
memcheck/tests/x86/filter_pushfpopf
tests/filter_discards
tests/filter_stderr_basic

All those filter scripts generated by configure.ac by AC_CONFIG_FILES from the
.in files should not be in dist_noinst_SCRIPTS but in noinst_SCRIPTS.

When doing this also update the tests/check_headers_and_includes script which
is run at the end of make regtest and will check the scripts are listed
correctly in the Makefile.am files:

$ make post-regtest-checks
...checking makefile consistency
memcheck/tests/Makefile.am:1: error: filter_dw4 is missing in
dist_noinst_SCRIPTS

[kwin] [Bug 452118] On X11/Wayland, all windows moved to be mostly offscreen after disconnecting external monitor

Yours is almost exactly my problem too. Nate's prior advice helped me with
windows moving around for a while at least by clearing out the mountain of
different display geometry "profiles" that accumulate as kde gyrates during
display changes, which in my case is exacerbated by my thunderbolt dock
weirdness. My windows were moving about and moving to the 1px width same as
you mentioned with every geometry hotplug change, also moving off my 50"
display to a 15" laptop 4k display, which became infuriating to find and resize
_each_ window when it happened.

Clearing the geometry profiles in kde as mentioned helped, where I found 40+
profiles had accumulated. My hypothesis is KDE reels every time there is a
change, and creates a profile for _every_ iteration it sees. The problem with
my TB dock is it'll periodically glitch, reset my displays, and everything
starts bouncing around for a minute or so until it settles. It's an oddity
only someone with a TB dock would see, plus like you with the nvidia gpu it
makes things even more interesting. I think ultimately it is driving KDE
insane in doing so, or at least with so many profiles to choose from, it ends
up saving geometry to each, better or worse, and it becomes a role of a dice
which it lands on.

I've been using Wayland now for some time, and it's even worse than xorg in
using the TB docks as every hotplug, the displays all land on different port
ID's each time, and with 4x displays (3x on the tb dock) doing that, it becomes
a problem for KDE to manage. Literally every glitch changes my displays from
(dp-4, dp-5.1, dp-1, dp-5) to (dp-4, dp-5, dp-3, dp-1) and then variably from
there. With xorg it would do it occasionally too, but far less prone, and far
more deterministic. Wayland is far more variable meaning I have 5 different
latte-dock profiles for each display tuple that occurs I have to manually
switch between every time my displays rearrange themselves by port-id.

This probably needs fixed at the thunderbolt/gpu driver levels that the
displayport ports so randomly jumble like that. Certainly anyone else using a
usb/thunderbolt adapter devices like that would have similar issues with
multiple displays. I've tried with multiple TB docs, they both do the same
things.

Nate also said this should improve with newer handling to not create the static
profiles anymore, so hopefully that helps.

These corner cases are all hard to describe, and I'm sure harder for folks to
emulate with fairly exotic hardware, but hopefully these reports help the devs
understand the nature of the problems to consider when writing these features
if they don't have a like hardware configuration to experiment with themselves.

(In reply to Michael Butash from comment #35)

I experienced 1px windows after buying USB 3.1 docking station (one HDMI port
connected to external display). Once it starts to resize lets say Libre Office
windows it continues also with other setups without docking station.

I also noticed that Plasma often freezes when I click on the icon of group of
1px windows on the task bar. This could be connected with our problem. The
strange think is that I can not move anything in opened windows during that
freeze (few seconds) but the mouse cursor moves normally.

Can confirm, it's a bit choppy when scrolled with a touchpad really fast. I
very much doubt this is a Plasma 6 regression though as the delegates were only
just recently ported to be lighter weight than they were in Plasma 5.

Nate Graham changed:

Ok, this is a bit unfortunate. What's going on is that the icons aren't being
re-colored because the re-coloring logic happens in plasma-integration, which
presumably you're not using because you're not on Plasma. In this situation the
expected way to get the icons to look correct is to switch to the "Breeze Dark"
icon theme, which has the icons hardcoded to a light color, rather than
requiring that they be re-colored.

However that would only make sense if you were using a dark theme everywhere.
If you are, you can safely use the Breeze Dark icon theme.

If not, then you can install plasma-integration and then the recoloration will
work. However that might pull in a lot of other things... it depends on how
your distro packaged things.

I wonder if there's anything we can do to improve this situation. Maybe hide
the color scheme menu when we detect the app is running with a QPT that isn't
plasma-integration. Or maybe we can work towards moving the recoloration code
into kiconloader so you don't need plasma-integration.

randomly fail on various arches/distros.

I now also got it to fail on x86_64 (RHEL8). I am on a bad wifi network at the
moment, which might impact this. I suspect there really is a datarace in at
least some versions of glibc when dns lookups are retried.

Talked with some other contributors regarding this. Our practical options are
within Elisa are:

1. Within the app, detect when the user has chosen a dark color scheme via the
in-app color chooser menu, and if you're using the Breeze icon theme,
automatically substitute Breeze Dark. If you're using a 3rd-party icon theme
where we can't know if there's a dark version available, then screw it, you're
on your own. Downside: still represents a broken promise when using 3rd-party
icon themes.

2. Hide the color chooser menu when not using plasma-integration as the QPT.
Downside: hides a feature that we advertise and that can sometimes work
properly in some contexts.

Longer term, our options for Qt changes outside of Elisa are:

1. Upstream KDE's icon recoloration feature to Qt, so that it's active by
default when using a KDE app without plasma-integration installed

2. More broadly, create different infrastructure for "KDE app integration" and
"Qt app integration when run on Plasma" because they're undesirably connected
right now
