Hi Graham,

When you wrote:

That was definitely not the intention, even though
I can see how the result was perceived that way anyway.

...I hope your perception was _more_ than just that; there's not any
question whatsoever that important and perhaps a dominant feedback was
suppressed.

"For the record", I don't care that much and I'm not complaining. I'm
speaking up because I'm with Ilya on this, and likely many other voices,
if I did care I'd be damned annoyed, perhaps even upset, and, most
importantly, because I think there's always room for improvement and this
can be a "learning opportunity" to do things better in the future.

That said, the best version I saw, in my subjective opinion, wasn't even
on the list of choices: The one that looks a LOT like the current design
but inverted with the numeral 6 character serving the logical spot of the
current > character (shape), just backwards: It's instantly recognizable
and shows off the new version. Plus, in my view, it has artistic merit and
can't be any worse than the current design for its multiple uses
/ purposes.

I think there's time for a "new poll!"

With best regards,
Richard

To add some positivity I think Plasma 6.0 release is a great time for a
logo refresh and this is a good way to do it. It would be normal to
discuss this with the Plasma team ahead of time but we're still 2.5 months
ahead of 6.0 release so we have time yet, Plasma meetings are on Monday EU
afternoons in the #plasma channel, do come along to discuss.

Re: Plasma 6 new logo poll

2023-12-06 Thread Christian
Hi all,

as someone who did participate in the poll and would like to keep the current
version as the most favoured option: I just took the lack of "keep current"
option as a "if we are going to change, which would would you like best", so I
gave my vote to the option which is my second choice, after "keep current".
I think that brands are way too quick these days with throwing something built
up and recognizable over board, but iff we really have to change, then this one
is the one I think would be the best.

Only after Ilya's mail I do indeed see that people could interpret the result
as a "people want change", which will put pressure on. If e.g. 20 more people
felt like me and would choose their second best favourite, this might look
like there are 20 more people who support change, and fewer who want to keep
what we have currently.

Therefore I suggest we take this poll with a grain of salt.

Kind regards,

Christian

Re: Plasma 6 new logo poll

2023-12-06 Thread Nate Graham

Hi Ilya,

This is mostly my fault as the poll did indeed have a "keep the current
logo" option in the beginning, but I recommended removing it after
seeing the poll live on discuss.kde.org. The reason for that
recommendation was because the results of the poll are themselves a set
of options for the Plasma devs to consider, and they (we) always have
the option of not taking any of them. So from that perspective a "keep
the current logo" option would be redundant and have the potential to
reduce the number of options available for the Plasma devs to consider.

However I also see how the lack of a "keep the current logo" option
makes people who don't want any chance and who aren't or don't see
themselves as Plasma devs feel silenced. That was definitely not the
intention, even though I can see how the result was perceived that way
anyway.

And to reiterate, there was never intended to be any pressure on Plasma
devs to choose a new logo. As I understand it, the ideal behind the poll
was to pick the three most popular options and weigh them against the
current logo.

Not voting at all is not a solution because it is ambiguous: it could be
interpreted as not caring or supporting whichever new logo that poll
ends up "electing". "Non-bindingness" is also not an answer, because the
developers will feel pressured by the community to comply with the poll
results, even though they will be incomplete.

Ilya

Dear Community Members,

We have trimmed down all the proposals from KDE aficionados for the
new Plasma
logo taken from here:

to 6 (you know: as in Plasma _6_) and made a poll to determine the
all time
favourite.

If you would like to vote on the poll, please go here:

https://discuss.kde.org/t/plasma-6-logo-final-selection-and-poll/8001

The three most voted options will be passed on to the Plasma
developers for
their consideration. Please note that this poll is **NON-BINDING** and
changing the logo will depend on the willingness of the Plasma devs.
They will
have the final say.

Either way, the change, if it happens, is unlikely to occur in time
for Plasma
6.0, as the project is currently in Feature Freeze. This means that
only
corrections, bug squashing, and minor tweaking is going on. Nothing
new may be
added at this stage. So if the devs do decide to change the logo,
this won’t
happen until at least Plasma 6.1.

This poll will finish and be closed in one week.

May the best design win!

Cheers

Paul
