We probably should mark them as unmaintained yes.

Sure my point was that we do need to do something organisational
considering the software will break (or is already broken what with
login). Perhaps mark as unmaintained?

I suspect they're kept indefinitely (as a general rule Phabricator
never deletes anything)

Given that Phabricator has Arcanist for it's pastebin, and there are
other CLI applications for Gitlab, I don't think we need to take any
action here with regards to cutepaste or kpaste.

How long are pastes on phabricator or invent kept? paste has a combobox
to choose, but I did not see it on the other sites.

Hello Ben

Can you create a redirect to the currently supported/recommended paste/snippet
site from paste.kde.org? I'm not asking for the database of old pastes, jut a
redirect to the main landing page for those who may have muscle memory of
typing "paste.kde.org".

There is also kpaste, and none of those have seen commits in 4~5 years
so nixing them should not be a problem.

How does this affect the playground app cutepaste? Or rather: what's
the plan there?

Using arcanist we can easily paste from a terminal via `arc paste`
(assuming you've set up arc to talk to our phab that is). For gitlab
there's a range of snipping cli tools you can find as well.

I would prefer not to, mainly because then it's still something we
need to carry around for eternity.
Pastebins are generally regarded as transient / temporary, so
depending on the settings specified by the users the pastes in
question are likely already gone.

(For the bugs, I just picked one at random from the list -
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353983 - and all four pastes
referred to there are already dead)

Yes, both Phabricator and Gitlab will require login to create pastes/snippets.

Besides having access to maintained code, are the new services also
requiring logins? Seems like this would cut down immensely on the spam,
malware, pirated stuff, illegal porn, etc. that pastebins seem to host.

Shutdown of paste.kde.org

2019-02-02 Thread Ben Cooksley
Hi all,

For some time now Sysadmin has been aware that the application we use
to run paste.kde.org is unmaintained, and therefore represents a
security risk. Additionally, for a long time now we've been forced to
require people to login in order to create pastes there, due to the
severity of the abuse we've experienced.

Because this makes it functionally equivalent to the pastebin
functionality included in both Phabricator
(phabricator.kde.org/paste/) and Gitlab (invent.kde.org/snippets)
we've decided that it would be best if paste.kde.org were to be
discontinued.

We'll be shutting this service down in approximately one weeks time.
Should anyone be using it to store content for long term purposes we'd
advise you to migrate it to either Phabricator, Gitlab or somewhere
more permanent (like a wiki) before the shutdown.

Following the shutdown we will be erasing the database, so any pastes
not saved elsewhere before this time will be lost.

Should anyone have any questions regarding this, please let us know.

Regards,
Ben Cooksley
