It does a core dump and firefox freezes until that finishes. Do you have any .core files in your home directory? Also look at IO activity when firefox freezes next. With regards to PIM, I had KMail refusing to type sometimes, I found `akonadictl restart` or if akonadi isn't running `akonadictl start` fixes the problem.
