Re:Report issue similar to or same as BUG 234132

2018-12-19 Thread Jeremy
After reading the bug report again more carefully, I went back and
reinstalled the originally updated ports from my poudriere repo with KF5
5.53, QT5 5.12 Plasma 5.12 xserver 1.20.3 and mesa 18.3.1, and disabled the
integrated Intel HD 4600 graphics and switched back to my discrete nvidia
card. While using the x11/nvidia-driver, KDE is working normally again with
no issues with flickering or rendering.

Report issue similar to or same as BUG 234132

2018-12-19 Thread Jeremy
I would like to report an issue similar to BUG 234132. I was running
FreeBSD stable 12 build r341835. My install included xserver 1.20 and mesa
18.3.1, with the drm-kmod for FreeBSD 12 (based on Linux KPI 4.16), using
Haswell HD 4600 integrated video. I am also using the Intel driver, not
modesetting. I was using Plasma 5.12.7, KF5 5.52 and QT5 5.11. Everything
in Plasma was working fine, all of the KDE apps ran correctly and I had no
issues.

When I upgraded to KF5 5.53 and QT5 5.12, I ran into very similar issues to
what was reported from BUG 234132. There were rendering and screen
flickering issues. My KDE desktop was virtually unusable from those issues.
So first I uninstalled and reinstalled all of my apps from my poudriere
repo and cleared the .cache folders in my accounts that I log into. The
issue remained. I then downgraded my versions of xserver back to 1.18 and
mesa back to 18.1.9 (essentially using the current ports tree) with a clean
repo from poudriere. With Plasma versions 5.12.7, KF5 5.53 and QT5 5.12,
the issues remained unchanged.

I then reverted the updates for QT5 5.12 and KF5 5.53 back to QT5 5.11 and
KF5 5.52, and cleaned out the .cache folders again, and rebuilt with a
clean poudriere repo and the issue is gone. So I am essentially using the
ports tree from right before the QT5 5.12 and KF5 5.53 commits were made.
Everything is running normally and all of the KDE programs are running
fine. I'm sorry for the lengthily post. I hope this can shed a little more
light on the issue.

[Bug 230070] devel/cmake: check_library_exists fails to find libX11/XOpenIM

2018-12-19 Thread bugzilla-noreply

--- Comment #3 from Adriaan de Groot ---
This is a misunderstanding what CheckLibraryExists does. It takes **one**
LOCATION and checks for the given function in that location. You can pass it a
list, but in CMake's internals -- see CheckLibraryExists.cmake -- it then gets
passed on to try_compile as a string; this loses all the list-ness of LOCATION.

You can see this for yourself by running cmake --debug-trycompile and then
grepping through the resulting CMakeFiles/ directory.

The correct way (well, **one** working way) to look for XOpenIM is to *first*
find the library, then check for the function:

```
find_library(_x11forreal X11 HINTS ${X11_LIB_SEARCH_PATH})
if (_x11forreal)
  check_library_exists(${_x11forreal} XOpenIM "" XIM2_FOUND)
  if(${XIM2_FOUND})
MESSAGE("YES XOpenIM is found (2)")
  else()
MESSAGE("NO XOpenIM is NOT found (2)")
  endif()
endif()
```

This just leaves out the LOCATION and uses the direct path to the library.

Note, also, that X11_LIB_SEARCH_PATH is an internal variable, not documented,
that contains the list of places FindX11.cmake is going to look: it's not a
computed value. So another way to do this is to use the X11 library variable
that **is** documented:

```
check_library_exists(${X11_X11_LIB} XOpenIM "" XIM_FOUND)
```

I'll grant you that the documentation of check_library_exists could be a lot
better.

[Bug 234132] x11/kde5: System settings crashes, minimise window artifacts

Hi Adrian/others,

#1

<<<
Does the flashing / tearing problem also exist if you run Plasma 5 desktop as a
different ...
>>>

I doubt that. For about a day, the flashing/tearing was not visible/apparent
enough, and the System settings applet too worked well. It was only after a day
of use that window restoration from panel became a spectacle. When I thought
this might be something related to Desktop Effects, I tried turning DE off. But
then the System Settings applet went bonkers too.

#2

I shall be running K5 again only after setting up the debug environment - I
have never launched a debug environment like this before. So I shall need clear
instruction.

a)
Should I reinstall FreeBSD ? The current installation was without kernel-dbg
distribution.

b)
On a clean box, I put 'WITH_DEBUG=yes' in /etc/make.conf and then build xorg
and kde5. Is that what I should do to get the backtrace setup ready ?

CAICOS is R5 230 (My OEM is Sapphire Radeon). Actually it comes as a nasty
solution to me that I could ship out the Radeon card and put in an NVidia card.
A not-so-ingenuous solution, but a solution none the less that I will keep in
the back of my mind.

Thanks.

1) Does the flashing / tearing problem also exist if you run Plasma 5 desktop
as a different user, with the default theme, layout, settings, .. ? (Create a
new user, then log in with a Plasma session from SDDM)

2) For backtraces, you might get away with starting systemsettings in gdb in a
terminal window, e.g. in konsole run "gdb $(which systemsettings5)". If it
crashes, enter command "bt" or "bt all" and copy-paste the stack trace into an
attachment. To rebuild with debug, you'll want to set it in make.conf and then
rebuild all that's necessary: I'd suggest qt5\* (except for qt5-webengine,
since that's not going to work with debugging enabled), kf5\*, and plasma5\* .

What's a CAICOS? I have some random AMD card lying around here -- looks like an
R7 360 to me. I could try swapping some stuff around, but if your hardware is
something way off then there's not much point.

Date: Wed Dec 19 14:53:54 UTC 2018
New revision: 487800
URL: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/ports/487800

Log:
  Add OPTIONS to misc/kdeutils.

  Like, say, graphics/kdegraphics, this is a metaport where all the dependency
  ports may be considered optional. Add options to allow selecting all the
  bits. By default, select all of them. Bump PORTREVISION because the PHB
  says that changes applying to non-default options also count -- although
  that seems a bit sketchy here.

Hi Tobias/Kubilay,

Since I shall be running the debug version, I assume you want me to build the
kde5 port, and not install the kde5 package.

Is that right ?

Is it enough for me to set WITH_DEBUG=yes in /etc/make.conf and then build the
kde5 port ?

Thanks.
