Things don't stop working from one day to another without a reason. Perhaps you
installed updates distributed by your distribution? And do you see any error
messages? The report leaves some bits to our imagination sofar, unfortunately.

[Bug 164108] New: KMail does not check email

--- You are receiving this mail because: ---

Summary: KMail does not check email
   Product: kmail
   Version: 1.9.9
  Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs kde org
ReportedBy: egxoun8uya67izy jetable org

Version: 1.9.9 (using 3.5.9, Kubuntu (hardy) 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7.1)
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS:Linux (i686) release 2.6.24-19-generic

Well, I've been using Kontact/KMail since Ubuntu 6.06 and it has worked fine so
far. However since today the disconnected IMAP does not work anymore. No email
are being fetched anymore. I deleted all config files, recreated new
accounts in the account setup it even finds correct server settings but
in the main view I press the check mail button and just about a second later I
get the message returned that no new mail has arrived, however nothing was
really checked, I have a couple of email accounts like that and none works.

For testing reasons I did setup imap on thunderbird and there it works all fine.

The only thing I have chaned is switching from 2.6.24-16-generic to
2.6.24-19-generic kernel (Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron)

Not all mails are affected. It seems the affected mails, have some bad UTF-8
encoding or at least my amavisd-new scanner added such a warning in all
affected mails. I attach an e-mail sent by this bugzilla system concerning this
bug, which is affected by this problem :-)

It seems other mail clients are a bit more flexible in ignoring/fixing the
encoding error, while KMail only succeeds in interpreting it correctly when the
mail is either selected or unselected.

Will,

Look for events or to-dos with binary attachments.

I bet that's the problem.

We rely on a 3rd party library for the low-level calendar API and there are
known bugs with binary attachments.

SVN commit 820430 by tnyblom:

BUG: 126064

Moved the "Check what server supports" button to below the options.
Reordered the "Account Name", "Host", ... fields.

Now the pop/imap dialogs look more like the SMTP one and have a more
natural order (atleast I think so)
