I have some additional debugging information that might be helpful.
In this case, I clicked on a never-opened email which basically hung.
Eventually the debug log showed "request for item 50965 "31165" failed..."
At this point I clicked on a previous email which loaded immediately and the
next email which previously said it was waiting and it opened immediately.
It is as if the notification that the email eventually loaded is lost (or it
timed out waiting for the notification).

Fairly often KMail will take many seconds to complete the operation and in some cases KMail will hang and never recover. Even clicking on a different email does not make it recover, even if it was previously opened. I am also using several filters on incoming email to move emails from various mailing lists into folders. I do not have any problems when using Thunderbird connected to the same server. When it hangs I typically need to restart Akonadi in order to recover. Note that I have a fair number of emails in several IMAP folders. My inbox has about 7300 emails and my largest subfolder has 33,967 emails (8862 unread). Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: Click on various emails until it hangs. Actual Results: KMail will frequently be very slow to open the email and will periodically hang completely and not recover. Expected Results: It should open and read emails in a reasonable amount of time (a second or two at the most). However, they would prefer drop the product for anything else that accomplish their needs, like dropping Fedora 16 for some older distro with kmail 4.4 ! kmail is already embarked since long in rendering HTML inline, so kmail2 has to be efficient in what it has been doing rightly before. I'm no expert of Qt, it seems that Qt 4.8 relies heavily on QtWebkit 2.0 which is quite young and manages itself a network caching mechanism. KDE seems to have an older autonomous http caching API, and these two are perhaps in competitive play. This is just a guess, I don't argue it's the truth. Only expert KDE developpers can resolve this problem in my view, perhaps by better integrating recent changes in the Qt framework. For me, disabling the http cache in konqueror works perfectly : on one host with standard Fedora 16, on another host with Debian squeeze and a self compiled Qt 4.8 and a self compiled KDE 4.8. Here's what I did: * open a folder with 900 mails (~200 MB) * move all contained mails to a different folder on the same IMAP account There was no feedback about an ongoing transfer of mails. After I closed Kontact and opened it up again only 137 mails (13 MB) were in the destination folder. The source folder was empty. I checked the maildir on the mailserver (dovecot) and saw that the IMAP server was in sync with what KMail showed. I can restart KMail immediately after a crash, and load HTML messages (not even outside content, just activating HTML) and it will not crash. I don't use imap. Hence trash is local. I move mails by dragging them with them mouse from the folder contents list (kmail2 sub window in the top right) for sent-mail and dropping them onto one folder in the kmail2 sub window in the lower left. When I do this, a window pops up asking me whether to copy or to move and I click on "move". At this moment I see the number of mails in the sent-mail basket decremented by one and the number of mails in the target folder incremented by one - as expected.
