well, I see this (mails not readable in disconnected imap account when server
is not available) here in kmail from kde 4.13 .
not in each case, however, as it seems that recently added emails are still
visible/readable, while older ones are not.

[kmail2] [Bug 334170] New: IMAP accounts are always switched online at startup

2014-05-01 Thread Jonathan Marten
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334170

Bug ID: 334170
Summary: IMAP accounts are always switched online at startup
Classification: Unclassified
   Product: kmail2
   Version: Git (master)
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: j...@keelhaul.me.uk

An IMAP or POP account in KMail has the option (under Retrieval Options),
"Switch offline on KMail shutdown". This works, and is useful for those cases
where the user may not want to retrieve mails all the time.

However, there is no corresponding option to choose whether the account is made
online at KMail startup - this always happens. This may not be what the user
wants - e.g. they may not want the additional network traffic, or may not want
to synchronise a disconnected account automatically.

Suggest that there should be an additional option "Switch online on Kmail
startup" (with the default being true) to cover cases like these.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Configure Kmail with an IMAP account
2. Set its Retrieval Options: Include in manual mail check OFF, Switch offline
on KMail shutdown ON, Check mail on startup OFF.
3. Exit KMail
4. Start akonadiconsole and confirm that the resource is offline.
5. Start KMail again. The resource will go online immediately.

Actual Results:
Resource goes online when KMail starts up.

Expected Results:
Have not requested it do do that.

[kmail2] [Bug 334173] New: Receiving Accounts: untidy layout, unusual Retrieval Options control

2014-05-01 Thread Jonathan Marten
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334173

Bug ID: 334173
Summary: Receiving Accounts: untidy layout, unusual Retrieval
Options control
Classification: Unclassified
   Product: kmail2
   Version: Git (master)
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: config dialog
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: j...@keelhaul.me.uk

See attached screen shot. Although everything in this dialogue works as
expected, the layout has some anomalies:

- The "Retrieval Options" button for each resource is not centered properly and
has no top or right margin.

- This being a dropdown button which brings up a checkable list of options is
not a familiar control and needs two clicks to change a single option (2 clicks
per option if more than one needs to be changed).

- The "Customize accounts order" button below is so wide that at first glance
it is not recognisable as a pushbutton, due to the big blank areas to left and
right. It's not clear what this button does, either - there is no tool tip,
whats this or dialogue help.

Suggestions to improve the appearance and operation are:

- Remove the Retrieval Options from the scrolling list and have it as a
dialogue accessed from a new button on the right (between "Modify" and
"Remove"). This is a more familiar way of interaction and has the advantage
that as many options as needed can be changed in a single operation.
- Right align (with appropriate margins) the "Customize accounts order" button,
and give it a tool tip and/or whats this.

Reproducible: Always

[kmail2] [Bug 334175] New: Local Folders are not set to online at KMail startup

2014-05-01 Thread Jonathan Marten
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334175

Bug ID: 334175
Summary: Local Folders are not set to online at KMail startup
Classification: Unclassified
   Product: kmail2
   Version: Git (master)
  Platform: Compiled Sources
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: misc
  Assignee: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
  Reporter: j...@keelhaul.me.uk

I have disabled the Plasma desktop calendar integration, so that Akonadi server
does not get started at login time. Therefore it is automatically started when
KMail is started.

The server is started as expected, but in KMail the Local Folders are shown as
"(Offline)" and will not display or fetch any mail. To get them online it is
necessary to do an explict "Update Folder" of the inbox or any other folder (a
manual or scheduled mail check will not work) and confirm in the resulting
dialogue.

akonadiconsole confirms that the resource is not set online at KMail startup.

This problem only seems to happen if it is KMail that triggers the automatic
startup of the server. If another Akonadi-using application (e.g.
akonadiconsole or kaddressbook) is started first, the resource stays offline at
that point but correctly goes online when KMail starts up.

Existing KMail and starting it again (so that the Akonadi server is still
running) correctly starts with the resource online.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Ensure that no Akonadi applications or the Akonadi server are running.
2. Start KMail

Actual Results:
3. Observe that "Local Folders" are shown as offline, and that the message
list appears but no message bodies can be shown.

Expected Results:
"Local Folders" should be set to online

The retrieval options for "Local Folders" are set to: Include in manual mail
check ON, Check mail on startup OFF.

Since I switched to 4.13, search is apparently handled by baloo. I removed
baloo because of high CPU usage and because I regard it a security risk
(deleted mail may remain in the index). Since then the quick search bar returns
no results. In earlier versions you could search in the headers without any
desktop search installed. Please return this behavior if baloo is not
available.

no it's wrong it returned result from subject directly.
And it works as it in 4.13.
Kmail works with baloo so if you remove it too bad for you.

I don't understand; what is wrong? I think it searched in the subject/sender
directly (without an index); that's what I was refering to.

> And it works as it in 4.13.

Do you mean the "direct" search should work? It doesn't work for me, even if I
select Subject below the search bar.

> Kmail works with baloo so if you remove it too bad for you.

Well, that's when I'm switching mail clients I guess. Showing security
liabilities and CPU hogs down users' throats is not a good strategy, and I'm
not the only one telling you that.

Also, even full text search shouldn't really require indexing. I just grepped
through 100 MB of text (that's about 1 e-mails without the attachments) and
it took half a second.

When moving/symlinking .local/share/akonadi, akonadi (and specifically kmail)

This is very nasty and should be fixed urgently!
