This issue with the crash is still happening with the most recent update. 
please fix asap.  this has been a problem for months even years possibly

As a workaround: Configure KMail... -> Accounts -> Receiving -> 
-> Modify... -> Advanced -> Authentication -> PLAIN (instead of Gmail)
No more big frustration :)
