[Bug 261612] should tell me that the server address is not an SMTP server

2012-04-14 Thread Alexander van Loon
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261612

--- Comment #2 from Alexander van Loon ---
To be honest I don't know, but I suspected that if a mail client sends some
requests to an SMTP server, for example credentials to log in, the SMTP server
should answer that request according to the SMTP protocol. If that is not the
case, doesn't that lead to the conclusion that either the address is invalid,
the server at that address is not an SMTP server, or that the SMTP server at
that address is temporarily down.

If it's not possible to determine that it's not an SMTP server, maybe the error
message could be made more helpful: 'The server could not be contacted at this
address, verify if the address is correct or try again later' or something like
that.

[Bug 288605] New: Mail Dispatcher Agent went offline for unknown reason

2011-12-09 Thread Alexander van Loon
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=288605

Summary: Mail Dispatcher Agent went offline for unknown reason
   Product: Akonadi
   Version: 4.7
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: Mail Dispatcher Agent
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl
CC: vkra...@kde.org

Version: 4.7 (using KDE 4.7.3)
OS:Linux

With Akonadi 1.6.2 and KMail 4.7.3 KMail I experienced this twice now two days
ago and today. I don't remember changing anything with package updates or in
configuration regarding Akonadi or KMail. What happened is that when I sent an
e-mail in KMail it wasn't sent, but it was just placed in the Outbox, doing
nothing there.

After a Google query I found this –
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129839 – advice. I opened the
Akonadi console, noticed the Mail Dispatcher Agent being offline for some
reason. Toggling it back to online fixed it immediately, the e-mail was sent.
My conclusion is that the MDA went offline by itself for some reason I can't
fathom. Not sure if I can reproduce this, but if there are logs of some kind
I'd be happy to provide them.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
No idea as I said, but maybe someone who does have an idea might find this
bugreport and realize more people are affected.

Expected Results:
The MDA should never go offline in such a sneaky manner without the user being
aware of it, KMail gave me no error message at all and I had no idea what was
wrong.

Since the 4.7.2 version of Kontact arrived through Kubuntu's updates (version

Thank you very much for fixing this Laurent. I have two questions, 'Use smart
quoting' is an option which is not enabled by default, yet the option seems to
enable what is default behavior for every e-mail client I know of? And what is
the reason for not having this option enabled by default? And what do you mean

Thank you for your reply Torgny, but I don't understand. You seem to be
referring only to the last two attachments. Can you take a look at the first
four attachments were the quote sign is not replaced, but completely missing
for some lines (which also have incorrect line breaks)? Those first four
e-mails were certainly not HTML e-mails.

I wonder if I'm the only one seeing this behaviour? Because I'm still
encountering it even to this day with the latest KMail updates in Kubuntu
Oneiric. Or might there be something wrong in my installation and is it
possible that formatting my hard drive and doing a new install might solve it?
Because I've been upgrading all the way since the early betas of KMail 2?

[Bug 278685] New: should indicate that message is marked with icon instead of green text

OS:Linux

Currently in Kontact 4.6 if a message is marked as important or as an action
item, thetext of the subject, sender and date in the message list are made
green. Other e-mail clients use icons – such as the exclamation mark is used
for important messages by Evolution – to distinguish mails marked as such in
the message list. The problem with the green text is that the text becomes
white, just like the black text of normal messages, when they are selected. So
if I select a normal mail and a mail marked as important, it's impossible to
see the difference unless deselected. That's why I think KMail should use icons
to distinguish mails marked as important or action item from normal mails.

[Bug 262782] sent mail reports sender address different from sender address in inbox

--- Comment #4 from Alexander van Loon

Thank you for your advice Alex. I assume this fixes it, but I think this is a
serious flaw in the design of KMail. So far I had only one identity, now I need
to make a second identity for the @students.uu.nl GMail account and set the
custom transport. And then this setting for the custom transport is hidden in
the Advanced tab.

I don't remember ever having an issue like this with other e-mail clients.
AFAIK Evolution never had this strange separation between accounts and
identities like KMail has, and the server settings for sending e-mail are
'linked' to the settings for receiving e-mail in the same account in other
e-mail clients AFAIK. What KMail does is very confusing.

Using Kontact version 4.6 rc1 here. Please see bug #274966. If you are a BCC
addressee of an e-mail you will see not see any recipient mentioned in the
'To:' field of that e-mail. Not seeing any recipient mentioned in that field is
very strange for users, because obviously the user received that e-mail.
Leaving it blank only confuses the user, I thought it was a bug in KMail (which
it is, even though it is not unintended behaviour).

The headers of such e-mails apparently list 'undisclosed-recipients' as the
addressees. I suggest that KMail also mentions this in the GUI, showing
'Undisclosed recipients' in the 'To:' field instead of leaving it blank.

I'm using KMail 4.6 rc 1. When I sent an e-mail to a specific address, the
e-mail did not list a receiving address when I viewed it in the Sent Mail

When I filed this bug is was certain that not a single message in those months
was flagged. At least, the message list doesn't indicate this (by the way, even
if I do mark a message as important, nothing changes in the interface, no red
exclamtion mark icon for example is displayed in front of the message subject).
To be totally sure I tried flagging the messages as important and action items,
and then de-flagging them. This fixed the problem, now these specific months
are no longer permanently expanded. However, I filed another bug for the
message list not indicating that messages are flagged as important or action
items, bug #273902.

OS:Linux

Using KMail 4.6 beta 5 here. When I mark any random a message as important or
action item in the message list of one of my IMAP accounts, the message list
gives no indication whatsoever that the message was just marked. The icon in
front of the subject of the message just remains the same icon indicating that
the message is read. Other e-mail clients change the icon to a message with an
exclamation mark to indicate that it was marked as important.

Reproducible: Always

[Bug 273714] New: message list of e-mails has certain months/weeks expanded unnecessarily

2011-05-20 Thread Alexander van Loon
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273714

Summary: message list of e-mails has certain months/weeks
expanded unnecessarily
   Product: kmail2
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: message list
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl

Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.2)
OS:Linux

I'm using KMail 4.6 beta 5. I've been testing the beta's daily for months, and
for all this time I've seen that the message list on my accounts is at certain
places expanded unnecessarily by default. For example, on my IMAP account #1
(all of my account are IMAP) the month October 2010 is expanded, even if there
are no messages there which are unread or flagged as important or whatever.

I can shrink the month October 2010, but if I open another folder and then
change back to IMAP account #1's inbox again, the month October 2010 is
expanded again. In the inbox of IMAP account #2 KMail always does it with the
months January 2011 and December 2010. The same applies there, in those months
there are no unread messages or whatever.

Only these three specific folders are affected in the inboxes of those two
specific accounts, #1 and #2. Account #1 also has some subfolders, but they are
not affected at all. Only the inboxes of #1 and #2, but the inbox of IMAP
account #3 is not affected.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Don't know.

Expected Results:
Only expand months/weeks in the past if they have unread (and possibly also
marked) messages.

[Bug 261559] KMail stopped recognizing KWallet for password for specific SMTP server

2011-05-20 Thread Alexander van Loon
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261559

--- Comment #9 from Alexander van Loon
2011-05-20 11:41:53 ---
When I created a new account this problem turned up again, but with a twist.
When I entered the password for the SMTP server of the new account KMail
complained that it could not use KWallet for the password, and offered that it
would store the password itself. Then, when I opened Kontact again the next day
or so, KWallet somehow was available to KMail again and it offered to migrate
the stored password to KWallet. I did so and then everything was fine.
Unfortunately I can't give screenshots or exact messages describing what
happened, it happened a few days ago and I didn't document what happened
exactly. This happened with KMail 4.6 beta 5 on KDE 4.6.2.

I can still reproduce it. I use KDE version 4.6.2 and KDE PIM 4.6 beta 5
(updated Kubuntu 11.04 with the Kubuntu Experimental repository). I sent a
message from a.vanl...@students.uu.nl to a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl, in the
sent-mail folder it says incorrectly that it was send from
a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl to a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl and in the inbox
of that account it says correctly the message was sent from

[Bug 266358] Akonadi agent crashes when sending e-mail and on KDE login

2011-02-15 Thread Alexander van Loon

--- Comment #1 from Alexander van Loon

I have some more information to add. Even after logging out and in again after
seeing the crash today, Akonadi Agent keeps crashing and restarting the
application results in another crash, so it’s nagging me with three of those
crash information dialogs until it shuts up. Also it seems I cannot send
e-mails anymore. If I open the message stuck in my outbox (the e-mail I tried
to send at the first time the crash hit me) Kontact gives me a progress dialog
telling me ‘Please wait while the message is transferred’ for a long time,
until it stops and nothing happens. So it seems the bug is reproducible for me
every time now.

I would appreciate to hear if there is any quick fix or workaround for this
bug?

-- Information about the crash:
- What I was doing when the application crashed:

I’ve been using the beta version (4.6 beta 4) of KDE PIM for some months now,
but yesterday was the first time I ever encountered this issue. I simply had
Kontact opened for quite some time, idling, and then I tried to send an e-mail.
This triggered the crash of Akonadi Agent. After restarting or logging in again
Kontact finally did send the e-mail, so I thought everything was fine, If I
remember correctly. Then I logged in to KDE today, and right after the login,
without me doing anything (didn’t start Kontact yet) the crash message telling
me that Akonadi Agent failed occurs again.

Bug #253150 was suggested as a duplicate of my issue, but the backtrace and the
cause of the crash were quite different, so I filed this new bug report.

The crash can be reproduced some of the time.

[Bug 262683] KResource Migration Tool reports address book migration every time I log in to KDE

--- Comment #2 from Alexander van Loon

I noticed that going to System Settings → Personal Information → KDE Resources
will also trigger the ‘KResource Migration Tool’ dialog.

Also, I think that this bug should be filed to Akonadi instead of KDE PIM.
Because I’m apparently not allowed to change the product and component, I’ll
ask the Akonadi developers.

This bug – https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=591483 – is about this
issue as well, and after some more searching it turns out that this bug report
is a duplicate of bug #252536 on KDE’s Bugzilla, but that’s not filed for
Akonadi either.

Today after I logged in as usual I opened Kontact, but to my surprise it it
didn't show any content in the message list, it had a blank message list and
also if I remember correctly a blank list of the directory structure of the
IMAP account. I waited for ten seconds or so for everything to show up, but
nothing happened. I decided to close Kontact with the intention to start it
again, but it crashed. This has never happened before to me in the two months
I’ve been using the Kontact 4.6 beta's, normally it would open fine and my
message list and everything would be visible in two or three seconds.

--- Comment #8 from Alexander van Loon

I was wondering if there is a workaround available for this bug which I could
use while the the issue is not yet fixed? This bug is quite annoying because
many e-mails I send get messed up because of absent quote signs.

Also, I have discovered that in some situations the quote sign ‘>’ is replaced
by the characters ‘>’ which is illustrated in the following screenshot I’m
going to add. I’ll also add the message which triggers the bug if I reply to it
with KMail. I’m not sure if this is a different bug which is related to
encoding or something, but I suspect that this issue is caused by this bug as
well.

have this bug.

I have the same problem, using KMail/Kontact 4.4.6 and KDE SC 4.5.1 on Kubuntu
10.10. My mom had no idea how she could see the images, I had to tell her to
double click messages to open them in a window so the image does download. This
is an annoying bug for novice users and it occurs often, while I imagine it’s
not difficult to fix. Hopefully the KMail developers could give some priority
to solving this bug?

I used ‘Save As...’ in KMail to save the message. When I read your comment I
went on to investigate why the headers were apparently missing, as I noticed it
too when I opened the mbox file with Kate.

It turns out that I have discovered another bug, which I just filed as bug

[Bug 263434] New: saves messages differently depending on method used to choose ‘Save As...’

  Platform: Ubuntu Packages

Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.95)
OS:Linux

I’m on KMail 4.6 beta 3. I wanted to save a message with the headers included.
I decided to do so by double clicking a message in the message list so that it
would open in a new window. Then, using the menu of the new window, I chose
‘File ➝ Save As...’ to save the message as an mbox file. When I opened the
resulting mbox file with Kate I noticed there were no headers included.

Then I tried merely selecting the message in the message list and then chose
‘File ➝ Save As...’ to save the message, using Kontat menu. If I save this
message with this method, it did include the headers.

Of course, I don’t think it’s intended behavior that these two methods to save
the a message save it differently. Both should save the message with headers
included.

Reproducible: Didn't try

majority of e-mails KMail forgets again that they have attachments when KMail
is closed and started again (or after a reboot, not sure), meaning the message
doesn't have the paper clip icon anymore. This is somehow not the case for all
e-mails, for a minority it does remember that they have attachments.

OS:Linux

I think HTML should be allowed by default, including loading external
references from the Internet. KMail (4.6 beta 3) here is the only e-mail client
I know of which is so paranoid to disable HTML by default, Evolution doesn't do
it and never gave me trouble in this regard.

The following happened yesterday. I received a newsletter, which I thought was
plain text because it looked okay (no HTML tags everywhere) and because I
didn't get a warning that KMail wasn't showing the HTML (the warning in the box
with the red lines). I didn't like the newsletter, but I didn't notice a link
to unsubscribe from it. I complained with the customer service, who told me
that there is a link in the message. I looked at the source and noticed the
link and the fact that was an HTML message and not plain text.

Enabling the options 'Prefer HTML to plain text' and 'Allow messages to load
external references from the Internet' in Settings > Configure KMail... >
Security fixed this and made KMail display the newsletter correctly.

But I didn't file this bug report for an incidental HTML message for which
KMail doesn't give it's usual warning that it isn't displaying it correctly.
Even if the user does get the warning and sees a messages littered with HTML
tags it's too intimidating. I'm not alarmed because I know about HTML and the
reasons why it should not be allowed for security considerations, but my mother
who is also using KMail does not. She was confused when she saw this happen and
had to ask me for help, she doesn't know anything about HTML (and she doesn't
read the explanations in the configuration dialog).

Let's face it, HTML messages are very common, all other e-mail client I know of
display them by default, novice users are confused when KMail isn't displaying
HTML even if it can be enabled to do so. And how serious is the security
threat? Those who worry about security can always disable HTML, but for the
sake of sane defaults, please enable these options by default.

I just verified and smtp.gmail.com (I figured out I that smtp.gmail.com was the

different story) was indeed configured as the special transport.

But somehow KMail must have set that by itself, I'm quite certain I never

While I have not watched the folder structure carefully to see if KMail forgets
it after shutting down, I have a similar issue with the message list. I know my
issue is specifically with the message list and not directory structure of the
mail servers the reporter is talking about, but because it seems related I
thought it best to mention it in this bug report too. If it's not related I'd
be happy to file a different bug.

My issue with the message list forgetting things is as follows. If I go the
Inbox of one of my IMAP accounts and expand some threads of messages, and
collapse the display of messages of for example 'Two weeks ago' and 'October',
and then switch to for example the 'Drafts' directory of that IMAP account and
then switch back to the Inbox again, the threads are collapsed again and 'Two
weeks ago' and 'October' are expanded again. In short, KMail forgot what I
changed in how the message list is displayed.

Possibly this is a different issue, but I'd like to mention that KMail insists
on expanding 'Two weeks ago' and 'October' for no good reason. 'October'
doesn't have any unread messages. And 'November', 'September' and 'August' and
other messages are always collapsed.

displays the threads as collapsed instead of expanded, only the first message

I think it would be better if threads were expanded by default, so that I can
see all my messages. There was a moment when I thought that I had lost some

I'm using KMail 4.6 beta 3 and until just a moment ago I had problems with
sending e-mail over my GMail account. KMail would fail to send e-mail through
the GMail SMTP server, giving me a pop up with an error message containing text
like 'E-mail sending failed: failed to transport message. Socket operation
timed out' I also noticed that auto detecting settings for the SMTP server took
a very long time.

First I took a look at bug #261333 and concluded that KMail was not to blame.
Then I verified if my settings were correct and noticed that I had entered
smtp.google.com instead of smtp.gmail.com. Silly mistake, but once corrected
KMail worked fine with GMail. I assume this also explains why the autodetection
took so long, because I had the wrong server.

I think KMail itself could improve on this part by communicating clearly that
it couldn't find an SMTP server at the wrong address, the autodetect function
could have also warned me that it couldn't find an SMTP server there instead of
failing silently and doing nothing. An error message like 'Socket operation
timed out' isn't going to be understood by users.

KMail2 configuration files (AvL)

Today I installed a fresh Kubuntu 10.10 and upgraded immediately to Kontact 4.6
beta 3. After that upgrade I used Kontact for the first time and specified my
filters. My filters operate on the Inbox of an IMAP account. I have three
filters which filter on the List-Id header and the X-Bugzilla-URL header and
move the relevant messages to different subdirectories of the Inbox of that
IMAP-account. In the 'Advanced' section of the 'Configure Filters...' dialog
I've set the options for all three filters to apply them to incoming messages
and to only apply filters to the specific IMAP-account which is receiving those
messages (I have another IMAP-account as well which doesn't need filtering).
Like the other commenter, manually applying the filter works fine, but KMail
doesn't do it automatically on incoming messages. So beta 3 doesn't fix it for
me either.

Summary: KMail stopped recognizing KWallet for password for
specific SMTP server
   Product: kmail2
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Ubuntu Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: config dialog
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: a.vanl...@alexandervanloon.nl

Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.90)
OS:Linux

KMail gives the following error message if I try to enter a password for an
SMTP server:

KWallet is not available. It is strongly recommended to use KWallet for
managing your passwords.
However, the password can be stored in the configuration file instead. The
password is stored in an obfuscated format, but should not be considered secure
from decryption efforts if access to the configuration file is obtained.
Do you want to store the password for server 'smtp.gmail.com' in the
configuration file?

It then offers the options 'Store Password' and 'Do Not Store Password'.
However, KWallet seems to be fine so the error message is unjustified. I
apparently worked around the problem by simply sending an e-mail through the
specific SMTP server. Then KMail asks for the password on it's own initiative,
and then the password also appears in the settings. Without any further
complaints that KWallet is unavailable. This also means that I can no longer
reproduce the bug.

This is on KDE SC 4.6 RC1 with KDE PIM 4.6 beta 3.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Not sure how it started to happen. For the first e-mail account I added KWallet
stored the passwords fine, now that I have added a second one it starts
complaining when I need it to remember the passwords for the SMTP server. The
password for the IMAP server is remembered correctly.

I just found this bug after encountering this problem as well. I installed
Kubuntu 10.10 today and immediately upgraded to KDE PIM beta 3 through
Kubuntu's repositories. So I only started using KMail/Kontact for the first
time after having upgraded to 4.6 beta 3.

At first nothing seemed to be wrong and KMail would quote messages fine when I
would hit the reply button, but then I encountered the charset bug which is
described in bug #251658, see my comments there too. I used the workaround
(removing the empty 'pref-charsets' entry in $HOME/.kde/share/config/kmail2rc
in the [Composer] section) to fix that bug, but after doing that I noticed that
all standard templates were suddenly blanked as well. Possibly there is a
connection between these somehow?

Because by default the behaviour was fine and the templates were suddenly
blanked later on, my problem would indeed be more related to bug #184307
mentioned here in the comments, but that bug is for the old KMail.

Last sentence got eaten somehow, I wanted to say:

so I didn't use any earlier beta. Unfortunately I haven't
been able to reproduce it so far.

I also encountered this bug when I got the message 'No charsets were available
for encoding'. However, it did not crash KMail if I remember correctly, all it
did was refuse to save the e-mail as a Draft, KMail didn't stop working.
Following the instruction to remove the 'pref-charsets' entry in
$HOME/.kde/share/config/kmail2rc in the [Composer] section and starting Kontact
again fixed it for me.

However, this is on Kontact 4.6 beta 3. This is very fresh because I installed
Kubuntu 10.10 today and immediately used Kubuntu's repositories to upgrade to
KDE PIM 4.6 beta 3, so I didn
