If anything, it takes even longer, 8-10 seconds in my tests. Shouldn't this be a zero-work op? Nothing needs to be saved or indexed. To replicate: 1. As soon as I log in, I'm greeted with a dialog from KDE wallet with the
following message:
The application '{account-name} of type IMAP E-Mail Server' has requested to
open the wallet 'kdewallet'. Please enter the password for this wallet
below.
Why is it necessary to have Akonadi IMAP server request access to the wallet
the second I log in? And is it really necessary to have it running at all times
even before I started Kontact/KMail?
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Log in.
Actual Results:
The KDE wallet password dialog comes up.
Expected Results:
Wallet password is not requested until the IMAP server needs to be queried from
KMail.

At any rate, it allowed me to access my mail server, where now I cannot with KMail2. The value of this feature is that it would allow KMail to work with those IMAP servers that report the namespace corresponding to the user's home directory, so that KMail does not try to index every single file and folder there. When that happens, nothing I do in the UI (check mail in this folder, refresh folder list) can get KMail back in sync with the actual state of the folder. The only solution is to exit the application, delete the folder's index, and restart KMail. This actually happens with some regularity for the Sent folder on the server. Typically, at the start of the month it is automatically moved to a Sent-mmm- folder, and a clean Sent started in its place. KMail is not running at that time, but the next time it runs it misses this change and still shows the old contents in Sent. It may be too difficult to detect when something like this happens and handle it correctly, although it would be the preferred solution. But as a workaround, can at least there be a UI action that will force-refresh the folder? I don't know if this should be done as part of Check mail in this folder (F5) or if there should be a new action (Shift-F5, similar to how refresh/force-refresh of a page is done in some browsers). But either would be better than expecting the user to deal with bad index files by hand. I have never had that setting on any of my folders and don't know where it possibly came from - theme to 'Classic', using columns 'subject', 'receiver', and 'date'. The most visible symptom of the problem was that after starting up KMail, I would get an error dialog stating that Akonadi is not running. After closing the dialog, the app would close also. I started investigating, and got voluminous, but not very helpful error output when running 'akonadictl start' from the command line. (I'll attach a copy.) Further poking and twiddling with apparmor and other workarounds suggested in various bugs and forums was unsuccessful. Eventually, I stumbled upon mysql.err in ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ with the following contents: 100519 9:49:38 [Note] Plugin 'FEDERATED' is disabled. Deleting it and 'ib_logfile0', and then restarting 'akonadictl' seemed to fix the problem and I now have a working mail reader. I don't know how the log file got corrupted, but the system should be more robust than that. I mean, having a zero-size or corrupted log file does not need to be an unrecoverable error! It's completely reasonable in such a situation to delete it and proceed with startup. The database should still be in a consistent state, and the worst that could happen is that the last few transactions are missing. Or at the very least notify the user what the real problem is. This is what I had to do to fix the problem:
1. Create the account, and in the 'advanced' tab of the account creation dialog
delete all the namespaces that were entered by the 'reload' button and enter my
own ('mail')
2. Exit KMail without expanding the new account in the folder tree
3. Open kderc in the editor and locate the entry for the new account
3. in the account section, delete the lines '1=', '2=', and 'Namespace='
4. change the 'Namespace:mail=' to 'Namespace:mail=/'
5. save kderc and start KMail
6. now only the mail folders appear in the folder list
It looks like the namespace dialog does not produce correct config files.
