One other problem doesn't seem to be mentioned here: the old behavior opened
the link in the background and DID NOT CHANGE FOCUS.  Now, no matter how it's
done, if a link is opened, focus immediately changes to browser.

I suppose there may be an argument for immediately changing focus, but this is
a regression from many years of no focus change.

Yes.

It may be important to note that the headers are correct if I display the
message by hitting enter to open a message window.  It's only the preview pane
that displays incorrectly.

Both wayland and x11.

Interestingly, it looks like a plain text mail message that contains text that
looks like an http link and is made clickable by kmail does open a new tab
(without having to right click and select Open URL).  But that still changes
focus to the browser, which is a regression.  Links contained in html messages
seem to be the ones that do not click.

HTTP links in the preview panel no longer open a new tab in my browser. 
Furthermore, if I right click a link in the preview window, I can click open
URL.  This immediately changes focus to my browser with the link in a new tab.

The previous behavior was to open the link in a new tab in the BACKGROUND
without changing focus.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1.  Navigate to a mail message that contains a hyperlink.
2.  Click the link.
3. 

OBSERVED RESULT
Nothing happens.

EXPECTED RESULT
Link should be loaded in the background in a new tab in browser already running
in session.

I suspect this bug is related to using an external editor instead of the
built-in kmail composer.  I have been configured to use vim to compose mail
messages in kmail for years.  I notice that when I close the editor, the
composer window is not updated with my edits.  If I  around to the
composer window again, it now shows the editor session I just closed.

I tested this and confirmed that specifying an external editor introduces this
bug.

OK, I just checked again and the same problem is still there.

Start a new mail message; tab into Subject; type.  Typing is not echoed in the
Subject field.  It is present and is displayed when you tab out of Subject or
click somewhere else.

And now I see that Configure -> Kmail -> Identities -> Advanced is the place to
set the folder.  My settings lost this when I deleted and recreated my Gmail
account.

I can confirm the bug on Fedora f34 with kmail2 5.16.2 (20.12.2) and kf5
5.83.0-1.fc34.x86_64.

I reproduce the bug by switching to Calendar and then back to Mail in the
left-hand side icons in the kontact application.

The only way to restore the message pane is to completely quit (+q) and
restart.

SUMMARY
Define mbox account in /var/spool/mail/username and see error message when
restarting Settings -> Kmail -> Accounts -> Receiving.

Message is briefly visible in the Configure - Kontact dialog box from Settings
-> Kmail -> Accounts -> Receiving.  I have seen "No file specified." and
something like "Cannot read /var/spool/mail/garry".  It's hard to be accurate
because the error message only flashes on the screen briefly.  (That, in itself
is a bug that should be fixed.)

Add a sym link in home directory to /var/spool/mail/username and define mbox
resource using that file and now no error message, but...

kmail doesn't show all messages in mail box.

Kmail will not delete any messages in mail box.

Kmail won't show message has been read in the message list pane.


STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. 
$ mail garry  # Any local user on this machine.
Subject: Test

(The line that says "EOT" was produced by typing CTRL-D after enter key to

As far as I know, this simple mail format has been broken in kmail for at least
10 years.  Perhaps won't fix?  Withdraw option altogether?

My work-around is to use the /usr/bin/mail command.  I believe that program was
originally released in UNIX and later in Linux well before 2000.  POSIX
standardized it as /usr/bin/mailx in 1997.  I am unaware of any bugs in that
program.  Perhaps it could serve as an example how to process a mbox resource?

I would be happy to assist in any way I can.

SUMMARY
Message threading is broken when using a clone of Standard Mailing List
Aggregation.

Threading is flawless all the time when using Standard Mailing List
Aggregation.  Clone the aggregation and now new messages sometimes do not end
up threaded correctly and look like a new thread altogether.

All attributes are identical to shipped Standard Mailing List Aggregation.

As an aside, creating a brand new Aggregation with identical attributes also
results in broken threading.  It seems the only way to get flawless threading
is to use the built-in Standard Mailing List Aggregation.


STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Clone Standard Mailing List Aggregation
2. Select Clone for aggregation
3. 

OBSERVED RESULT
Some messages do not appear in their correct threads and end up being thread
leaders instead.


EXPECTED RESULT
Threading works as with the Standard Mailing List Aggregation.  (Since the
clone is identical in every respect that can be known from the UI.)

There used to be an option to display messages without HTML trying to be
helpful.  I wonder if that option could be restored.  It would also fix the

You might check that innodb_large_prefix was deprecated in MySQL 5.7.7 and is
now removed from MySQL as of 8.0.0.

(My version happens to be 10.3.12-MariaDB on Fedora 30.)

I tried your patch on my mysql.conf file and got a fatal error on start-up
because of this.

If you do a

ps -ef|grep mysql

command, you will see the --socket= parameter that you need to use when you
issue the mysql command.  If you simply do

mysql --socket=/tmp/akonadi-blah-blah

then, at the mysql prompt, do

use akonadi

you will be all set to alter the table as mentioned above.

It's disappointing that the developers have not seen fit to even acknowledge
this bug report.  At least you managed to find it.

I was unable to configure an Exchange calendar via the davmail proxy because
the item ID was longer than the column length for the pimitemtable.remoteid
column (255).

The error resulted in log messages like this:

  Error text: "Data too long for column 'remoteId' at row 1 QMYSQL3: Unable

I turned on general_log in mysql to catch the error.

The fix was:

alter table pimitemtable modify column remoteId varchar(1024);

(I imagine that 1024 is larger than what is strictly needed, but it costs
nothing to specify it.)

The message preview window used to scroll a page at a time by entering
a space character.  Once the bottom of the message was reached,
another space charater caused the selection of the next unread
message.

This behavior has been defined since forever.

Now, the only time the next unread message is selected is if the
current message doesn't overflow the preview window.

Also, the scroll a page at a time is broken.  If the message is more
than twice the vertical size of the preview window, the third space
character causes a scroll backwards!

may have fixed it.  Two systems are now *not* complaining about "Cannot open". 
One uses gmail and the other uses davmail for Exchange.

Threading frequently fails with newer messages not placed under the original
thread.

Here's how I perceive this problem:

Right click on Subject header in Message list and select Aggregation ->
Configure

Select Standard Mailing List

Click Groups & Threading

Select Perfect or Perfect and by References

Click OK

Now Message List is threaded correctly.

Wait for new messages to arrive.

Threading is now broken (sometimes).

Repeat steps above to restore correct threading.

I see this problem at work using an Exchange server proxied through an IMAP
proxy (davmail) and at home using Gmail directly.

I can confirm this bug.  I believe it showed up when I first installed KDE 4 in
Fedora.  It persists to this day.  I'm on kmail 4.14.2.

Occasionally focus is changed to another (seemingly random) message
spontaneously.  It seems to happen when the IMAP (Gmail) server is refreshing. 
I believe that focus always lands on an already-read message.

This is very irritating since I now need to find the message I was reading
before to resume.

This bug is fairly old, probably since KDE 4 originally shipped in Fedora.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Read mail
2. Wait for refresh
3. Repeat

It doesn't always happen on a refresh.  I have no idea what the triggering
conditions are.  :-(

Actual Results:  
Message list focus jumps to another message.

Expected Results:  
Leave focus on the message I'm reading until I change it.

Maybe automatic expiration (moving message to local folder) is also triggering
event, but not sure.  I have many folders in Gmail set to expire message older
than a few months by moving them to a local folder.  For example, my foo folder
messages migrate over time to my foo-old local folder.

Well, the behavior was fine for me for years.

My work flow is now broken (http://xkcd.com/1172/).

Open a new message window (ctrl-N); type in recipient(s); tab to
subject and type in subject; tab to message area and tab.  Now focus
is in the editor.  Edit message.

The behavior you requested and got is fine for replying to a message
since you want to start editing the reply immediately.  But it's wrong
to immediately open the editor and have it steal focus when starting a
new message.

I wish this "fix" never happened.

Selecting Message -> New Message results in the composition window and
immediately starts the external editor.  This is different from all previous
releases.  I used to have to place the cursor into the edit area and hit any
key to launch my editor.

Furthermore, the edit buffer I get omits my signature.  I have to type it in by
hand.

If I save and exit my editor and then press a key in the composer area again,
the full edit buffer, including my signature is loaded in my editor.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.  Configure an external editor for the composer
2.  Either reply to a message or create a new message
3.
Actual Results:  
Composer window is displayed and the external editor is started immediately. 
The editor's buffer does not contain the signature that appears in the composer
window.

Expected Results:  
The composer window is started and the focus is in the headers.  I can complete
the subject and headers and then move to the edit area and hit a key to start
the external editor.  The external editor will contain my signature.

Platform Version 4.10.3

Updating has improved things.

$ kmail --version

Messages stay read in all folders except the inbox.

The inbox folder often shows more unread messages than are actually unread. 
The index display most of the time does not show the additional messages as
unread -- only the count is wrong in the folder tree view.  Very occasionally
an old message will show as unread in the index but now it will display and
become read if I click on it or visit it with Go->Next Unread Message.

Much improved.  This bug should be closed.

(Another irritating thing -- spontaneously jumping to another message when new
messages have been retrieved -- is now fixed.)

My setup is gmail POP3 and filters to sort messages into various directories.

I attached the error log from a typical case.  I do Go->Next Unread Message and
that lands on a message marked unread that has been read.  I just waited at
that point until my POP account was polled.  At that point, the message list
selection jumped spontaneously to the last message in the current folder.

After starting kontact (kmail), and after my gmail messages have been
retrieved, and after my filters have been applied and new messages have been
moved to their appropriate folders, some folders show unread messages that
never display in the preview window and cannot be opened.  These message have,
in fact, been read already.  If more than one of these happens to be in some
folder, the Go->Next Unread Message function loops over all of these and never
moves to the next folder.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Start kontact.

Repeatedly do Go->Next Unread Message

Actual Results:  
Eventually I hit one of these "unread" messages that I have actually read
before.

Expected Results:  
Message that has been read stays read unless I explicitly mark it as unread.

Oops.

I forgot to set the test account to Loop in All Folders.  After doing that,
Go->Next Unread Message works correctly.

So, I must have something "wrong" with my settings(?).

I suppose you can close this and I'll try to find out what's causing it on my
account.

I just created a new account on this machine.  I configured kmail to receive
mail in /var/spool/mail and defined two filters to move inbound messages to two
different folders, depending on text in the message body.  I then sent three
messages to the test account so that one would end up in the inbox and the
other two would end up in two different folders.

When I did Go->Next Unread Message while on the one message in the inbox,
nothing happened.

I will attach the kmailrc file for the test account.

I see what happened now.

When you asked about the E-mail address, I noticed that the Folder->Mailing
List Management dialog did not specify the E-mail address.  I clicked the
Detect Automatically button and now it shows an E-mail address.  This fixed it.

The original problem seems to be that I somehow lost the folder properties
after the last update.

I'm sorry I didn't recognize this.  Please consider this closed.

(There may be a problem with the last update I received that blows away the
folder (mailing list) properties.  But I don't think I can reproduce that and
it's probably a packaging issue and not a KDE bug.)

Not so.

The folder contains a mailing list.  Folder->Mailing List Management says
Folder holds a mailing list, Detect Automatically.

The Ctrl-Shift-N action opened the composer window appropriately before recent
updates.

Kmail launches external editor when control key is depressed.  I finished
editing my message and saved and closed my editor.  The compose window now has
my edits.  I want to send the message, so I attempt to hit Ctrl-Enter to send,
but the control key alone launches another editor process.  I have to click the
send button to avoid another editor process after exiting the editor.

This bug is not fixed for me.  Perhaps I have a version different from the
version you tested against.

I strace-d my kontact process and I can confirm that the E-mail program opens
the editor file before fork()ing the editor and then reads the contents of that
file to place in the composer screen.  Since the editor renames the file it was
passed and then creates a new file with the original name in which to write its
changes, the E-mail program simply reads the original contents without the
changes that the editor made.

I am using gvim as my external editor (and calling it with the -f option to
force it to run in the foreground without fork()ing).  I don't think this is
new behaviour for gvim -- it has always rename()ed the original file then
open()ed the original file name, creating a new file, to write its changes.

The fix is to assume that an external editor will create a new version of the
file and open it *after* the child process exits.  Kmail in KDE 3.5 did not
have this bug.

Here's my version information:

It's even worse than that.

For many years, I have configured vim to not create backup files.  The (g)vim
program creates a new file and renames it to the original as soon as I tell it
to write my changes.

Since kmail now opens the original (and unlinks it), and waits for the external
process to exit, it ends up reading the original file without my saved changes.

This behaviour is new since KDE 4.something.

I have an older system I use at work:

$ rpm -q kdepim
kdepim-3.5.9-6.fc7

This version does not have the bug.  Apparently, the older version uses the
name (not the inode) to obtain the updated buffer after the external program
exits.

There is no work-around that seems possible here.

After logging out of KDE desktop, the akonadiserver process remains.  This
results in multiple "leaked" copies of akonadiserver, mysqld, and
akonadi_control running in subsequent sessions.

I am running the current KDE 4.2 beta installed from the kde-testing fedora
repository.

My work-around was to add

#!/bin/sh
akonadictl stop

to ~/.kde/shutdown/

I can confirm this exact behavior since installing Fedora 10.  The bug
continues with KDE 4.2 beta kmail, too.
