[Bug 163998] provide customized reply feature
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163998 --- Comment #3 from Maciej Pilichowski --- I understand that those are semi-automatic actions, however I will reply for one out of ~160 "spam" I got, just for the record. If someone really thinks, that I will waste another few days *again*, for hunting for bugs, which will sit in bugzilla for another 4-5 years, completely intact, just to be then bombed in 2017 with 170 mails "Kmail2 is now unmaintained, check if this is still relevant in Kmail3", she/he is gravelly mistaken. Sending and getting mail? Then why not adding little check on those two actions: if (program_is_not_configured_yet) run_wizard(); ? Such transparent design pays off, because user sees interruptions in his/her workflow ONLY when it is needed, not "just in case". https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163393 --- Comment #5 from Maciej Pilichowski 2011-12-21 19:50:48 --- Just to clarify, I am not against possibility of running wizard, I am against startup wizard. And again if user is so tech-savvy to install an app, and configure it, she/he is able to click one item in the menu. After all, in case of KMail, how is user supposed to reply to mail (one item on toolbar or menu) if she/he cannot do the same for another item? > Ifaik it will resolve the issue of knowing such values for 80% of > the home-users. Could you please tell my where you get those data from? > Why should someone start Kmail twice without configuring it aka using it? Because the system was reinstalled. Because it is another user. Because it is another computer. > That's why I get a wizard since KDE 4.8 when > configuring Akonadi as a resource for contacts, No, that's why many developers do not have clue about usability and accessibility. The candy-effect pays off better than hard work on usability. That is why we have all the "are you sure" crap instead of undo, that is why why we have all the "tips of the day" junk, that is why we have more and more EULA's. The fact world is shifting in some direction is not a _proof_ the one is right. > Every rogramm that needs to be configued before > use, should have an easy wizard that helps you setting the most important > values. AGAIN, they can have wizards, no problem, but no STARTUP wizards. Use cases (just examples): * Kmail -- I am evaluating import feature to compare it to Thunderbird, what do I need full setup at start for? * Amarok -- I would like to play some audio file, right now, sorry, but I don't need any setup, album settings, and so on If you wonder where this lead, observe Windows -- it is great example of your vision of user-friendliness, you cannot touch app before stating if you want search button with it, toolbar in FF, location, file association, and so on and on and on. And when you have to reinstall the system, or something like this, you get sick, before you even start. Bottom line is -- usability matters. One of its principle is this -- user is in control. Software should allow do things, not push the user around. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs
[Bug 163393] first run: allow just run KMail (skip the wizard)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163393 --- Comment #3 from Maciej Pilichowski 2011-12-21 10:55:08 --- Let me start by saying, that I consider myself as power user, however I also help weekend users to run computers, among them -- my Mom. So first of all, I am a bit suspicious -- your Mom (as I understood it) is not an expert, but she installs and configures KMail by herself? For me it is the first contradiction (i.e. I am doubtful). The second contradiction is this -- your Mom (or in general, any weekend user) is supposed to understand all the stuff with IMAP/POP3, SSL, plain text, and so on, no problem here, but there _is_ problem with clicking "settings/configure KMail"? Somehow I cannot believe it. Wizard is not shown once. It is shown each time for every not-configured KMail. And I saw it already too many times. And few remarks of general nature. Good solutions scale up. If startup wizard is such a good solution we should introduce it everywhere -- Dolphin, Konqueror, Gwenview, KDE itself, and so on and on. Really? IMHO -- no. It is counter productive. Ideally, installing and running program should not require any user interaction -- it means no EULA's, not installation wizards, no startup wizards. Program should not force user to do anything, it should let do it. This is significant difference. Programs should be usable, user-friendly, that's for sure, but they should not undermine productivity -- if they do, they are more like toys, not tools. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

The correct behaviour would be setting both to outbox, and no switching. Various of reasons: a) user wanted current tab to be X folder, if she/he intended to switch tabs, she/he would do this b) it confuses the user, switch changes context, if you have multiple tabs, how do you get back fast and easily to the original tab? c) this is inconsistent with other KDE apps (Konqueror, Konsole, Kate, ... you name it) d) there is nothing wrong in two views of the same content e) it limits the possibilities, like frozen searches: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149496 So, please just change the folder as user asks, and nothing more. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54864 --- Comment #9 from Maciej Pilichowski 2009-12-16 17:25:18 --- a) what if there is no search pane -- "find next" means "find next", not "show search pane, focus, and then find next". The difference is important especially for small screens b) it is wrong for even with search pane shown because it is counterproductive (try kate with search pane opened and just imagine what happens when search pane gets focus each time user hits find next), Konqueror does not have caret mode yet (right?) but even with forms it would kill usability -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

This means KMail is compatible only with selected KDE color schemes -- scheme change (in KDE) can lead to getting dark blue text on dark brown background. Hardly readable. My suggestion: instead of using hardcoded values for defaults for colors not covered by KDE global scheme, "link" internally colors KDE color -> KMail color Since color scheme is well polished, this means with each change whole KMail would change dynamically and correctly. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=138773 --- Comment #2 from Maciej Pilichowski 2009-08-23 21:03:47 --- Thomas, I understand "I like it" part, but my point is it is usability abuse. Two-fold: KDE does not work in fall-off mode, second, even at theoretical level of UI design such thing should not happen, because it leads to fragile UI (i.e. from user POV). More reading: infinite space (and apple menu). IMHO we should aim at consistent, robust UI, not personal preferences. If you don't agree with me, I think this report should be reopened, and new report for KDE posted to provide fall-off mode in KDE (so all apps would behave the same for users who like such mode). I explain how I imagine this feature by example: I write a mail to a friend and I would like to get an answer for that. Normally my friend should be able to answer within 3 days. So I set "reminder" for the reply for 5 days (safety). I send mail, and I can forget about it. If in 5 days I get the reply, you won't tell a difference comparing to current KMail. But if I _don't_ KMail would notify me (how, it is another story) that I have unanswered mail. Several things could occur: a) he didn't get my mail b) I didn't get his c) he forgot to answer d) he get it by it landed in spam folder, and so on... In my case it is usually (c) so it would help me coordinate the discussions. But of course network traffic reliability here is also an issue. Possible options: * list of friends with "sticky" reminders (for this guy set reminder by default to 2 days) * the way of notifying user of unanswered mail -- internal mail (my preferred choice) with important flag, or KDE notify system... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

Example of the problem: I am expecting some important mails, I have to accounts on server X and sever Y. The thing is Y broke this morning and on X I didn't have the messages (but I don't know it). The Y generates N empty e-mails. So when I clicked "check mail in" I get several empty emails but since they are empty I cannot tell if Y broke or X, thus I cannot tell if the mail I am waiting for is gone or not. Such thing happened to me this morning, I get 17 identical, empty "emails", no to, no from, no return path. So the only thing I know that one (?) of the severs went wrong, but which one? What mail is affected, I cannot tell. Thus the wish -- add "internal" data, for KMail user, fetching mail from server X add in header: Fetched-from: X So even if server answer only with bare message thanks to KMail I could still figure out where did it come from. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162839 --- Comment #2 from Maciej Pilichowski 2009-04-04 15:37:59 --- I meant status bar of the "find messages" (so it scan all folders) dialog. I cannot tell what about KDE4 because I use it only for testing, so it is empty. If you are sure this info now is reliable (i.e. shows accurate number of scanned messages so far), let's close is as worksforme. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.kde.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Kdepim-bugs mailing list Kdepim-bugs@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kdepim-bugs
