[Bug 163998] provide customized reply feature

2012-08-18 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163998

I understand that those are semi-automatic actions, however I will reply for
one out of ~160 "spam" I got, just for the record.

If someone really thinks, that I will waste another few days *again*, for
hunting for bugs, which will sit in bugzilla for another 4-5 years, completely
intact, just to be then bombed in 2017 with 170 mails "Kmail2 is now
unmaintained, check if this is still relevant in Kmail3", she/he is gravelly
mistaken. I could be naive 5 years ago, now I am not.

And btw. what do you need configuration in the first place (in case of KMail)?
Sending and getting mail? Then why not adding little check on those two
actions:

if (program_is_not_configured_yet)
  run_wizard();

?

Such transparent design pays off, because user sees interruptions in his/her
workflow ONLY when it is needed, not "just in case". So the user experience is
much more smooth.

Just to clarify, I am not against possibility of running wizard, I am against
startup wizard. And again if user is so tech-savvy to install an app, and
configure it, she/he is able to click one item in the menu. After all, in case
of KMail, how is user supposed to reply to mail (one item on toolbar or menu)
if she/he cannot do the same for another item?

> Ifaik it will resolve the issue of knowing such values for 80% of
> the home-users.

Could you please tell my where you get those data from?

> Why should someone start Kmail twice without configuring it aka using it?

Because the system was reinstalled. Because it is another user. Because it is
another computer.

> That's why I get a wizard since KDE 4.8 when
> configuring Akonadi as a resource for contacts,

No, that's why many developers do not have clue about usability and
accessibility. The candy-effect pays off better than hard work on usability.

That is why we have all the "are you sure" crap instead of undo, that is why
why we have all the "tips of the day" junk, that is why we have more and more
EULA's.

The fact world is shifting in some direction is not a _proof_ the one is right.

> Every rogramm that needs to be configued before
> use, should have an easy wizard that helps you setting the most important
> values.

AGAIN, they can have wizards, no problem, but no STARTUP wizards.

Use cases (just examples):
* Kmail -- I am evaluating import feature to compare it to Thunderbird, what do
I need full setup at start for?
* Amarok -- I would like to play some audio file, right now, sorry, but I don't
need any setup, album settings, and so on

If you wonder where this lead, observe Windows -- it is great example of your
vision of user-friendliness, you cannot touch app before stating if you want
search button with it, toolbar in FF, location, file association, and so on and
on and on. And when you have to reinstall the system, or something like this,
you get sick, before you even start.

Bottom line is -- usability matters. One of its principle is this -- user is in
control. Software should allow do things, not push the user around.

--- Comment #3 from Maciej Pilichowski 2011-12-21 10:55:08

Let me start by saying, that I consider myself as power user, however I also
help weekend users to run computers, among them -- my Mom.

So first of all, I am a bit suspicious -- your Mom (as I understood it) is not
an expert, but she installs and configures KMail by herself? For me it is the
first contradiction (i.e. I am doubtful). The second contradiction is this --
your Mom (or in general, any weekend user) is supposed to understand all the
stuff with IMAP/POP3, SSL, plain text, and so on, no problem here, but there
_is_ problem with clicking "settings/configure KMail"? Somehow I cannot believe
it.

Wizard is not shown once. It is shown each time for every not-configured KMail.
And I saw it already too many times.

And few remarks of general nature. Good solutions scale up. If startup wizard
is such a good solution we should introduce it everywhere -- Dolphin,
Konqueror, Gwenview, KDE itself, and so on and on. Really?

IMHO -- no. It is counter productive. Ideally, installing and running program
should not require any user interaction -- it means no EULA's, not installation
wizards, no startup wizards. Program should not force user to do anything, it
should let do it. This is significant difference.

Programs should be usable, user-friendly, that's for sure, but they should not
undermine productivity -- if they do, they are more like toys, not tools.

Maybe you should ask first, if you understand it?

I can always prepare a mail which looks like quotation from somebody else, now
what, you block ">" on my keyboard? Please drop that Java attitude.

No, it is a way to automatically add a header and footer for quoted mail in

[Bug 238136] New: adding group: checking the people's name is too strict policy

2010-05-18 Thread Maciej Pilichowski

Summary: adding group: checking the people's name is too strict
policy
   Product: kaddressbook
   Version: unspecified

OS/Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: bluedz...@wp.pl

Version:(using KDE 4.4.2)

It is required to send a mail to enter receiver name or just an e-mail?

The second, right? So why does Kaddressbook check also the name? I know it
maybe looks better but:
a) from technical POV it is not required
b) user does not have to know the name
c) entering the name in many occasions is just waste of time (receiver is a
company, and name is exactly like the email, off...@google.com)

So, the limitation is strictly artificial and it more hurts than helps.

The UI is too obscure or too smart. It is suitable for computer geek but not
for average person. There should be such buttons (explicitly) as "add person"
and "delete person".

For adding there is even no visual equivalent, for delete there is "-" sign
created on-fly, which causes problem when you think how to delete an item (and
there is no "-" sign yet).

So please add those buttons, usability matters.

Because it is report to have one. It is really no point in opening massive
amounts of reports in such scheme:
* please make it configurable -> closed, because of the regression
* please put the feature back -> closed, fixed
* please make it configurable

It will triple the number of reports, quite obvious. Not to mention time wasted

[Bug 151981] smart copy on wrapped, single line select

--- Comment #3 from Maciej Pilichowski 2010-01-13 18:58:31

Single line -- well, it was single line before KMail wrapped it.

About the "risk". Computers are made for doing automatic tasks. When I see task
which is essentially deleting characters one by one, over and over, it is an
automated task. So it should be done by computer, not by human -- we (humans)
should spent time on higher level issues.

And about removing quotation marks -- I am not saying it is trivial, but it is
not rocket science either.

First draft could be -- take the non-alphanumeric common prefix of line of
begin of selection and each other. Remove the prefix in copied content. Un-wrap
lines.

In next iteration of the algorithm it could be enhanced to handle multiple
lines.

[Bug 222240] New: tabs: let the user change the location of tab to any folder

OS/Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: bluedz...@wp.pl

Version:(using KDE 4.3.3)
Installed from:SuSE RPMs

I don't know if it was intended or not, so hard to tell if this is wish/bug,
but in general, from behaviour it is a bug.

Run KMail. Click on outbox. Create new tab. Click on sent-mail. Click on
outbox. You should see outbox in the current tab, but instead KMail switches
tab, and leaves the "current" tab not changed at all -- i.e. (1) tab outbox,
(2, "current") sent-mail.

The correct behaviour would be setting both to outbox, and no switching.
Various of reasons:
a) user wanted current tab to be X folder, if she/he intended to switch tabs,
she/he would do this
b) it confuses the user, switch changes context, if you have multiple tabs, how
do you get back fast and easily to the original tab?
c) this is inconsistent with other KDE apps (Konqueror, Konsole, Kate, ... you
name it)
d) there is nothing wrong in two views of the same content
e) it limits the possibilities, like frozen searches:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149496

So, please just change the folder as user asks, and nothing more.

I know it has a border, but it is fixed. User cannot increase the size of the
screen on demand, thus entire size of the window is also limited. The only way
to make it bigger is to resize the pane (of course this causes the other one is
shrinked, but at least you can see comfortable what you are working on,
currently).

The dynamic panes should be a standard in KDE in such dialogs.

Not really, because someone can implement configuring the color without 3
sections, and on the other hand, somebody can introduce 3 sections without
making them configurable.

Besides, this report is more like JJ, while the other is slightly more
elaborate.

669 here. So it is still too much. Btw. part of the height is spent on useless
subtitle, this issue was discussed on usability ML but it seems the approach is
even worse, because somebody put effort even in animating this stuff.

I also checked all tabs and sections, and none of them requires so much space.
Only two of them are close, but there is still place to put one row of buttons
(i.e. it means there is space that can be saved and make the dialog smaller).

a) what if there is no search pane -- "find next" means "find next", not "show
search pane, focus, and then find next". The difference is important especially
for small screens

b) it is wrong for even with search pane shown because it is counterproductive
(try kate with search pane opened and just imagine what happens when search
pane gets focus each time user hits find next), Konqueror does not have caret
mode yet (right?) but even with forms it would kill usability

[Bug 214697] New: error while opening/reading file -- do not claim any fact about existence of a file

2009-11-15 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214697

Summary: error while opening/reading file -- do not claim any
fact about existence of a file

   Version: unspecified
  Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR

ReportedBy: bluedz...@wp.pl

Version:(using KDE 4.3.3)

Testcase can be found here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214696

For example when KMail cannot open file when adding attachment the error says
"file does not exist". This is bold and inaccurate statement -- the fact KMail
cannot open file, the message should be "file cannot be read/opened (*)" (* one
of those two). I just observed how puzzling current message is for users --
they see the file, so obviously file exists, yet another program (KMail) claims
the file does not exist. It is very confusing and "of course" admin (me) is
called because user cannot sort it out.

And the reasons could be various -- bug in Kmail (as in testcase), -r for
reading (!), and so on.

Torgny, it is in reverse.
a) RFC does not state KMail "should", it shouts "SHOULD", so KMail better has
some _really_ good reason to ignore this
b) in 99% cases KMail violates the fields given in favor of 1% cases
c) and now simple use case -- what is worse:

1) send a public message to single person
2) send a private message to public (the world)

?

Why all KMail users should be put at risk for some lazy admin (I assume your
answer is (2) ).

"In the absence of the "Reply-To:" field,

So KMail as well should use "from".

This is an absurd:
a) instead of KMail doing all dirty work, now all user have to do it, to cover
limitation of KMail
b) in case of broken ML I could write to admin of such ML. But using KMail
would lead to no benefit, since even after fixing problem with ML KMail would
be broken

Keeping broken behaviour didn't work and won't work for any app. KMail now
promote broken ML, because broken, correct -- for KMail it does not matter, it
always works buggy.

And the logic is also flawed.

> If you want to reply to the author, please use the Reply-To-Author action.

Why we don't hear "If you want to reply to broken (only!) ML, please use the
reply-to-ML action"? It make sense -- in case of wrong mail explicit action is
required, but not in case of well formed mail.

Do we really have to follow the path of MSIE? I don't think so.

Please reopen this report -- KMail should behave properly for proper mails, it
cannot be simpler rule.

Please take a look:

plain fg
scheme.foreground( KColorScheme::NormalBackground ).color(), //
*colorbar html bg
scheme.foreground( KColorScheme::NormalText ).color()  //* colorbar

changed colors are marked with "*" after //. Such set maybe is not beautiful,
but safe and useful -- i.e. it always work no matter what scheme is set for
entire KDE.

--- Comment #3 from Maciej Pilichowski 2009-09-25 21:26:39

Martin, the number is not important (*).

The question is what is the more productive and useful way:
a) copy colors from KDE scheme to make a match
b) force user to customize just "few" colors -- from KMail, Akregator, KNode,
who knows from where

ad.a) I know the "important message" does not exists in KDE, but if you copy
the value from negative, or positive, or normal, or anything like that color --
it is a match. If you hardcoded green, it means, user has to change the colors
in KMail (and other apps with hardcoded colors) -- it is unproductive and not
useful at all

Please reopen this report. Thank you.

(*) or it is, but in favor of this report (reopening). Think about 1 million
colors. You still think it is better to customize that much colors to make the
match, or dynamically copy the values from KDE?

When displaying html message Kmail is on mercy of the html content really --
this includes colors and layout. It would be useful to break such dependency
(if required) on fly -- "drop html colors" + "drop html layout". Those switches
could be added to "html message" strip (the label next to the message itself).

This way, if for example due to the colors set, the message is unreadable, user
could quickly remedy the situation.

>From what I see KMail uses for several items hardcoded values (example: unread
message). This means KMail is compatible only with selected KDE color schemes
-- scheme change (in KDE) can lead to getting dark blue text on dark brown
background. Hardly readable.

My suggestion: instead of using hardcoded values for defaults for colors not
covered by KDE global scheme, "link" internally colors
KDE color -> KMail color

Since color scheme is well polished, this means with each change whole KMail
would change dynamically and correctly. For example such links could be
created:
KDE active -> KMail new
KDE link (not visited) -> KMail unread

This guarantees 100% working colors in KMail.

There is no such entry as "apply filter "mark as spam"" (or ham).

There are: apply filter, apply all filters, ActionList: toolbar_filter_action.

I don't use SA but bogofilter (another story if this is really dependant of
used filtering mechanism it should not be).

Currently Kmail handles those two actions as one combo with very confusing

toolbar (just an example)
mark as ham
separator
mark as spam

I copied *rc files and I got:

(*) as far as they can be -- since sending accounts are lost, the related

Unfortunately it is "my eyes only" case.

But! If you could put some info in this error dialog (I already reported this
issue) so I (and all users in such case) could pin-point the message, maybe I
could be able to produce some smaller file to import such that I could send ast
attachment.

Thomas, I understand "I like it" part, but my point is it is usability abuse.
Two-fold: KDE does not work in fall-off mode, second, even at theoretical level
of UI design such thing should not happen, because it leads to fragile UI (i.e.
from user POV).

More reading: infinite space (and apple menu).

IMHO we should aim at consistent, robust UI, not personal preferences. If you
don't agree with me, I think this report should be reopened, and new report for
KDE posted to provide fall-off mode in KDE (so all apps would behave the same
for users who like such mode).

But now, Composer is simply exception. Thank you for reading, I hope you will
reconsider.

/me too agrees, plus ctrl+shift+a could be used for messages (single):
ctrl+a -- selects focused message part, if none, body of the message (w/o
headers)
ctrl+shift+a -- selects entire message (with headers), no matter which part is
focused

So it would be slight backward compatibility break, but since ctrl+a was
annoying for single message before, this break would be useful actually.

@Finex, thanks for CC, but about votes -- I am out of any for such popular

I mean -- any bit (almost).

I see two possibilities:
a) view all headers would really reveal all headers, not only selected ones (it
could be actually a preset what "all" means, for weekend users current "all" is
sufficient, but for more advanced users it would be better to see all-all
headers)

b) or -- ability to switch "view source" of composed mail into edit mode (on
user demand I mean)

Or even both. This way user would be in control without having to look on disk
where the message is stored.

However the best would be removing the need of edit box anywhere -- allowing

PS. Current behaviour has an absurd side-effect, when there are no filters, the
default one is created automatically. User clicks ok, filter is deleted, you go
see filters, it is recreated again. And so on...

[Bug 196352] New: filters: custom filters are deleted on dialog-close because of errors

2009-06-13 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196352

Summary: filters: custom filters are deleted on dialog-close
because of errors
   Product: kmail
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: SuSE RPMs
OS/Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: bluedz...@wp.pl

Version:(using KDE 4.2.90)
Installed from:SuSE RPMs

Some time ago I wrote report about warning user about non valid filters:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137294

In a way it is implemented. Invalid filters are deleted. This is completely
wrong -- when you write a program, would you expect compiler output says:
"Syntax error: your source file has been deleted"

? I think no. So why deleting filter rules because of user omission:
a) warn user, correct
b) mark the filter as invalid (inactive)

ad.b) let the user _correct_ the filter, don't make him/her start entire filter
from scratch

[Bug 192865] New: "waiting for the reply" feature

2009-05-16 Thread Maciej Pilichowski
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192865

Summary: "waiting for the reply" feature
   Product: kmail
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: SuSE RPMs
OS/Version: unspecified
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: bluedz...@wp.pl

Version:(using KDE 4.2.2)
Installed from:SuSE RPMs

This wish go further than simple notification of getting the mail of the
recipient.

I explain how I imagine this feature by example:
I write a mail to a friend and I would like to get an answer for that. Normally
my friend should be able to answer within 3 days. So I set "reminder" for the
reply for 5 days (safety). I send mail, and I can forget about it. If in 5 days
I get the reply, you won't tell a difference comparing to current KMail.
But if I _don't_ KMail would notify me (how, it is another story) that I have
unanswered mail.

Several things could occur:
a) he didn't get my mail
b) I didn't get his
c) he forgot to answer
d) he get it by it landed in spam folder, and so on...

In my case it is usually (c) so it would help me coordinate the discussions.
But of course network traffic reliability here is also an issue.

Possible options:
* list of friends with "sticky" reminders (for this guy set reminder by default
to 2 days)
* the way of notifying user of unanswered mail -- internal mail (my preferred
choice) with important flag, or KDE notify system...

[Bug 192855] add "signature" of used account for any fetched mail

--- Comment #2 from Maciej Pilichowski 2009-05-16 12:33:10

Hmm, I thought of it as rather behaviour for safety reason. It is specialized
true, but all users could benefit from it. And I don't see any penalty except
few more bytes per each mail.

Thank you very much for the explanation -- works like a charm. Actually it
takes creating empty criteria, and unchecking options for stopping filtering.
Just tested, and it adds tag per each account, so thanks once again, Thomas!

This wish is thought as safety in KMail but because of shortcoming of the
servers -- however sooner or later even the best server will crash.

Example of the problem: I am expecting some important mails, I have to accounts
on server X and sever Y. The thing is Y broke this morning and on X I didn't
have the messages (but I don't know it). The Y generates N empty e-mails. So
when I clicked "check mail in" I get several empty emails but since they are
empty I cannot tell if Y broke or X, thus I cannot tell if the mail I am
waiting for is gone or not.

Such thing happened to me this morning, I get 17 identical, empty "emails", no
to, no from, no return path. So the only thing I know that one (?) of the
severs went wrong, but which one? What mail is affected, I cannot tell.

Thus the wish -- add "internal" data, for KMail user, fetching mail from server
X add in header:
Fetched-from: X

So even if server answer only with bare message thanks to KMail I could still
figure out where did it come from.

When you are selecting something program should not break selection. So it
should either select more elements or set boundary for selection. In this case
selecting next element does not make sense.

KDE3 --> QS switchable.

Data loss is always a bug.

Adding confirmation dialog "The filters data are modified. Do you really want
to quit? [ quit ] [ cancel ]" would prevent accidental data loss or not?

not really acceptable.

And nobody said anything about modality.

I meant status bar of the "find messages" (so it scan all folders) dialog. I
cannot tell what about KDE4 because I use it only for testing, so it is empty.
If you are sure this info now is reliable (i.e. shows accurate number of
scanned messages so far), let's close is as worksforme.
