[Bug 295000] New: KMail dataloss: Incoming EMails are destroyed

2012-02-28 Thread thomas gahr
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=295000

Summary: KMail dataloss: Incoming EMails are destroyed
   Product: kmail2
   Version: 4.8
  Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: major
  Priority: NOR
 Component: filtering
AssignedTo: kdepim-bugs@kde.org
ReportedBy: kde-bugzi...@dadommas.de

Version: 4.8 (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS:Linux

I hate to be so unspecific but this one is hard to describe.
From time to time - about twice a week I am spammed with messageboxes from
KMail stating Unknown error - No items found. And I find the inbox of one of
my pop3-accounts containing a list of empty emails - (No Subject), unknown
sender, unknown date - as in: completely shredded. I seeem to have lost about
150 mails this way and this really... sucks...
The only thing I see when opening one of these mails is:

X-CRM114-Version: 20100106-BlameMichelson ( TRE 0.8.0 (BSD) ) MR-646709E3
X-CRM114-CacheID: sfid-20120116_225406_819802_58555055
Message-Id: (sfid-20120116_225406_819802_58555055)
X-CRM114-Status: UNSURE ( 0.00 )
X-CRM114-Notice: Please train this message.

It looks like my spam-filter was handed the email already empty.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to reproduce this, it just happens every now
and then.
Any pointer as to how to debug this would be highly appreciated, I want to be
as helpful as possible to track down this bug.

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

Steps to Reproduce:
None, happens sporadically.
My mails are eaten.

Expected Results:
My mails should not be eaten.

[Bug 295000] KMail dataloss: Incoming EMails are destroyed

2012-02-28 Thread thomas gahr
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=295000

--- Comment #1 from thomas gahr kde-bugzilla dadommas de 2012-02-28 18:41:07
---
Well, I have been able to sorta reproduce the No items found error message,
but the method is quite unorthodox, you have to be fast ;)
The situation: create a folder and move a bunch of mails there. Before doing so
try to put the system under load so the moving will take a little longer - i.e.
akonadi(?) needs to be slow. This way, if you're fast enough, you can issue the
move command a second time while the messages are still in their old folder. In
other words: create two overlapping move actions for the same message(s).
This way I got the No items found error to appear.
No luck on getting emails eaten though.

--- Comment #2 from thomas gahr kde-bugzilla dadommas de 2012-02-28 18:45:40
---
...oh, even better:
Create a filter without conditions and configure it to not be included in
automatic filtering of any sort. Set the action to move into some temporary
folder. Assign a shortcut to it so it can be issued quickly.
Then select some mails and trigger the shortcut twice in a row. This will bring
the No items found error quite reliably.
Hope this helps some dev to maybe narrow this down.

New crash information added by DrKonqi

kontact (4.8.0) on KDE Platform 4.8.00 (4.8.0 using Qt 4.8.0

- What I was doing when the application crashed:
Closed Kontact

- Unusual behavior I noticed:
KMail could not open any mails, showing Retrieving folder contents only

Happens often, restarting Kontact does not change anything.
Restarting Akonadi makes the behaviour go a away. Note: restarting akonadi
takes very long (about 1-2 minutes)

[Bug 281552] Copying messages to mbox copies only headers, no body or attachments

2011-09-28 Thread thomas gahr
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=281552

--- Comment #6 from thomas gahr kde-bugzilla dadommas de 2011-09-28 13:11:40
---
I know this bug is still around messages and alike don't help anyone, but I
noticed something that might help the devs reproduce this: for some reason I am
seeing the body is lost when moving email behaviour excessively on the
qt5-feedback mailinglist I subscribed to [1]. Just in case somebody is already
trying to investigate this.

Maybe this is of interest: I created a simple filter on mailinglist filter
that moves the messages into Local Folders-green-MLs-Qt5 Feedback -
who knows, maybe the folder hierarchy matters...

I currently have a build of KDE's 4.7 branch stuff lying around along with
kdepimlibs and kdepim, as soon as I get around to it I will setup a user and
make kmail2 fetch qt5-feedback from there as well, my plan was trying to
reproduce it in a reliable way and hook into KMCopyCommand, maybe modifying it
to check for consistency of the moved Akonadi::Item[s]. Unless someone here
tells me it's the wrong place to look at to find the cause of the problem, of
course ;)
I'll keep you updated on whether this approach succeeds in prividing new info.

Well, considering that a) akonadiconsole is a developer-tool and b) the bug is
not reproducible nor have I witnessed it since back then, I'll mark this bug as
resolved. I don't think there's a need to spend developer-resources on this,
there are more important things to do imho.

I can confirm this and it is really annoying and alarming - looking in
.local/share/.local-mail.directory/ it seems the bodies of the mail are really
lost, not just not displayed by kmail:

http://fpaste.org/touk/

...bummer

If it matters: this mail was moved from one maildir (pop3 account) to my local
folders, also maildir. The moving was done by a filter.

ok, this is strange... i changed the one imap-account (i'm using 2 pop3
accounts and one imap) to disconnected imap (i.e. deleted the old one and made
a new , disconnected one) and since then the crasg didn't occur once - i've
been applying my filters all around the place like there's no tomorrow - no
crash can be provoked...

New crash information added by DrKonqi

ok, tried again and it is reproducible... attaching the crash dump to show that
it's exactly the same crash.
interesting artifact of the crash: there are a few new messages in the inbox
folder with unknown date, recipient and empty body, but the subjects are those
of formerly existing ones - i.e. some messages were cloned (couldn't make out
any pattern as to which ones were cloned or not)

hope that helps,

thomas
