I've used KMail from Debian Wheezy - vKMail 4.4.11 ( https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/kmail ). Interestingly, others reported that the feature was removed in much previous version. It worked for me in 4.4.1 though. Now I'm with Debian Stretch with KMail 5.2.3 . A workaround I currently use is to disable the immediate marking of opened messages as read. IMHO filters to the message list should only be applied "onChange" of the filter button, as it previously was. And guys, thanks for the wonderful software! My guess is that it's just not easy to change. If the filtered view is designed
to reflect the status of the message, it will disappear when it is read. I
don't know the internals, but I think a new status ("read but not really read")
would need to be introduced.

But it's definitely not as pleasant as being able to doing this by simpling filtering on unread. BTW: Behaviour in Akregator (or KMail 1) is to leave that mail visible even though it is now marked as read and the filter says "only unread".
