hi , I got this error , and after googling arrive here , 
My solution was system settings - akonadi configuration - akanodi server
configuration - restart mysql (akonodi server)

Appart from the lock failure I consistently get the follwing error as well:

KMail encountered a fatal error and will terminate now.
The error was:
Failed to fetch the resource collection.
