Re: [Kea-users] How do I install and configure ISC Kea DHCP Server on RHEL 9.0?

2022-11-16 Thread Dan Oachs
RockyLinux 8 is a replacement for Centos8 and you can convert from one to
the other.
RockyLinux 9 is equivalent to RHEL 9.

I have Kea running on RHEL 8 and RockyLinux 8. I assume it would also run
fine on either RHEL 9 or RockyLinux 9. Which is what I would do if I were
installing a new Kea server today.

Ask here: https://forums.rockylinux.org/

I don't recommend upgrading. Just start a new VPS and migrate your
configuration and data to it. Then retire the old ones.

Definitely, I also would go with Rocky or Alma over Stream to replace CentOS
7, but I'm a bit more conservative and would wait till EL 9.1 before jumping
versions :)

I would recommend, if possible, to update straight to Rocky 9, or

Otherwise you'll have to upgrade again in ~18 month, when Rocky 8
(CentOS Stream 8) goes EOL. Kea is available for el9 from EPEL (version

Since RHEL 8, Red Hat offers 5 years of full support and another 5 years
of maintenance support [1]. I'm no expert on the difference, but to my
understanding only high priority issues will be fixed at Red Hat's
discretion during maintenance support. The last minor release of RHEL 8,
which marks the end of full support, is scheduled for May 2024 [2].

As a rule, I upgrade the OS when I upgrade the hardware, because
upgrading between major revisions isn't supported. And generally
requires a lot of finicky tweaking of settings, so I need to get that
done while the old hardware and OS are in service.

Back when Fedora replaced the original Red Hat releases for end user
installation, I discovered I was supposed to upgrade every 6 months. I
discovered RHEL/CentOS had a much longer upgrade cycle matching how long
I went between hardware replacement, so I switched.

For specific applications I'm willing to install a more bleeding-edge
version, and Kea fits into that category, as there don't seem to be
major breaking changes between minor versions, and I'm not doing
anything exotic with my small networks.

Also, the instructions for setting the repo up here say to use yum for
RHEL distros, but RHEL uses dnf since RHEL-8. (There's a courtesy
symlink so one can use the "yum" command but it just invokes dnf.) I
tried to use the manual instructions for dnf for Fedora but they assume
one is using Fedora 29. I edited the resulting
/etc/yum.repos.d/isc-kea-2-3.repo to replace fedora/29 with el/8 and
that made Rocky 8's dnf work and find the 2.3 packages.

I would strongly suggest going with Kea. I have Kea running on RHEL 8.

I would start by installing the cloudsmith repository and then you can use
yum/dnf to install kea:
https://cloudsmith.io/~isc/repos/kea-2-2/setup/#formats-rpm

Once you have kea installed, follow the Kea documentation here:

[Kea-users] How do I install and configure ISC Kea DHCP Server on RHEL 9.0?

2022-11-14 Thread Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo En Ming
Subject: How do I install and configure ISC Kea DHCP Server on RHEL 9.0?

Good day from Singapore,

I understand Kea is a relatively new implementation.

How do I install and configure ISC Kea DHCP Server on RHEL 9.0?

Are there any well written documentation?

Not sure whether to use the classic/legacy ISC DHCP Server or the new ISC
Kea DHCP Server.

Thank you.
