[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313274] [NEW] After upgrading to 14.04, nvidia-settings crashes with BadValue X Window System error

2014-04-27 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 14.04 the screen resolution is not as I want and
changing with nvidia-settings is not possible, because the program
crashes when applying new settings.

michael@quad:~$ nvidia-settings

ERROR: Error querying target relations

The program 'nvidia-settings' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 738 error_code 2 request_code 158 minor_code 25)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
michael@quad:~$

The crash occurs when using the Apply button.

ProblemType: Bug

Package: nvidia-settings 331.20-0ubuntu8

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 759725] Re: The kernel is no longer readable by non-root users

2014-04-27 Thread Thiago Martins
Since the vmlinuz-X.WY.Z-X-generic can be easily downloaded from the
Internet, this by design change makes Ubuntu less useful.

Ubuntu needs to make IT things (Linux) better for humans, not worse...
:-/

This is also afecting OpenStack... Reference:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1311987] Re: deploy-ironic ramdisks do not boot: Failed to execute /init (error -28)

2014-04-27 Thread Adam Gandelman
This turns out to be a kernel issue, either upstream or in Ubuntu.
Bisected to the following, which was released in 3.12.

commit 16203a7a9422315bc929461503e3a046459ea5ff
Author: Rob Landley r...@landley.net
Date: Wed Sep 11 14:26:12 2013 -0700

initmpfs: make rootfs use tmpfs when CONFIG_TMPFS enabled

Conditionally call the appropriate fs_init function and fill_super
functions. Add a use once guard to shmem_init() to simply succeed on a
second call.

(Note that IS_ENABLED() is a compile time constant so dead code
elimination removes unused function calls when CONFIG_TMPFS is disabled.)

I agree this is an edge case for tripleO but not so much for general
Ironic usage, as admins should be free to declare nodes with as little
memory as they want, and DIB produced deploy-ironic ramdisks should be
expected to work.

** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

+ wifi firmware installed was default in Ubuntu 14.04 (mac 64bit OS) and
synaptic shows the bcmwl-kernel-source to be installed. I get intermittent
disconnections from the wifi which is set to g-only. Other wifi router
settings have not been any better. Changing the wifi installation from the
default of Ubuntu 14.04 have not improved things. I tried the
firmware-b43-installer with similar results as above.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1295788] Re: [Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P] Ubuntu 13.10 64bit sometimes freezes on resume from hibernation

2014-04-27 Thread Nyyr
So far it works with no problems (just once it did not power off after
hibernation). So either it is fixed in this kernel version or the
problem was caused by combination with bumblebee and nvidia driver.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend

2014-04-27 Thread Mark Rowan
Removing Jupiter (as in comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1286552/comments/60
) has solved the problem for me. Additionally, suspending is now back to
pre-13.04 speeds on my Thinkpad X220 (i.e. under 2 seconds).

Bug description:
After suspending ubuntu the wifi doesn't work. The solution given here
  (http://askubuntu.com/questions/368671/ubuntu-13-10-wifi-not-re-
connecting-after-suspend) worked for me but when I have updated my
Ubuntu now it won't work. I have tried to test mainline kernel but it
  won't to boot with it.

To reproduce the bug : just suspend the computer and then power it.
There's no wifi network until you restart the computer.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313196] Re: [HP ProBook 450 G1 Notebook PC] Wireless switch not working

2014-04-27 Thread Mauro
Hi Christopher, thanks for your support. I just tried the AMD64 ISO
image of the daily snapshot of 14.04 from the links you provided. The
behaviour is the exact same one of 13.10 (i.e.: button not working, same
message in dmesg, orange led even when WiFi is enabled).

Title:
[HP ProBook 450 G1 Notebook PC] Wireless switch not working

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This system has a button to enable and disable the WLAN interface. This
button has a LED on it: it's white when the WLAN is enabled, orange when it is
not. Pressing this button, however, does not have any effect on both Ubuntu
13.10 and Mint 16 KDE (which is also based on Ubuntu 13.10). When I press this
button, the following output is produced in dmesg:
  [ 1536.228861] atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xf8
on isa0060/serio0).
[ 1536.228872] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e078 keycode' to make it
known.
[ 1536.308669] atkbd serio0: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code
0xf8 on isa0060/serio0).
[ 1536.308680] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e078 keycode' to make it
known.

There's just a minor difference in behavior between Ubuntu and Mint:
while in Mint the led correctly turns white when the WLAN interface is
enabled (and the outcome of rfkill block/unblock is correctly
reflected by the button led color), in Ubuntu this led seems to always
stay orange, even if the WLAN interface is active (and connection is
correctly established). Please note that I only tried to run Ubuntu
from a USB stick (no installation at all, no update performed).

WORKAROUND: I can use rfkill block/unblock to enable/disable the WLAN
  interface.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1307236] Re: NVidia Issues - blurry text after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04

2014-04-27 Thread Michael Mess
I have had the issue, but in my case it seemed to be caused by some broken
package dependencies.
After resolving them and rebooting, the issue was gone.
Probably you should have a look at the package dependencies, if you can't fix
it with the suggestion above.

But in my case the resolution settings are still not like what I want and I
cannot change it:
Now I have a problem with nvidia-settings, that crashes every time when I try
to apply new settings:

NVidia Issues - blurry text after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04

Status in “nvidia-settings” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  I have a System76 Bonoboo with a GeForce GTX 670MX

I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 and after the upgrade finished I logged
in and the text in the windows would get blurry until I refocused on
the window and then get blurry again. I tried various nvidia installs
(nvidia-common, nvidia-prime, etc.) and when I would reboot I would
get the lightdm screen to authenticate but the dash panel would not
  appear after logging in.

  Looking at .xsessions I noticed:

init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning
init: at-spi2-registryd respawning too fast, stopped

  My workaround has been:

  apt-get purge nvidia*
  and then to run NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.49.run

  xrandr shows:

  Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 3280 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384

DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Let me know if any other information would be helpful. I have seen
that there are some nvidia related issues that will hopefully be
worked out. I just wanted to document my experience in case others
  have a similar problem.

  Peace - Anthony

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313300] [NEW] Unable to hibernate HP6530b with fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04

2014-04-27 Thread Kunjesh Kaushik
Public bug reported:

I am able to put my computer to suspend mode (STR) but not to
hibernation mode (STD). I have already allocated enough of swap space on
a separate disk partition. But it is not working.

I have not been able to isolate the problem between suspend and resume,
and so was testing hibernation support as suggested at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelHibernate and
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/power/basic-pm-debugging.txt.
Specifically, I was testing using commands like the following:

| cd /sys/power
| echo shutdown disk
| echo platform pm_test
| echo disk state

So far all the suspend tasks work okay; still no joy!!

== My observations ==

I came across two interesting things in the dmesg output:

1. PCI HotPlug is always reporting existing devices while trying to
resume.

| [ 3098.516294] pciehp :00:1c.5:pcie04: Device :85:00.0 already
exists at :85:00, cannot hot-add
| [ 3098.516300] pciehp :00:1c.1:pcie04: Device :02:00.0 already
exists at :02:00, cannot hot-add
| [ 3098.516304] pciehp :00:1c.5:pcie04: Cannot add device at :85:00
| [ 3098.516307] pciehp :00:1c.1:pcie04: Cannot add device at :02:00

I suspect these devices (which happen to be for the ethernet and the
wifi) are not allowing the suspend to proceed. A little bit of searching
also led me to http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.pci/19876
which indicates that this problem may be a regression.

2. ACPI is also complaining about AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT exception,
although only once, at the boot time.

| [ 16.019199] i915 :00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
| [ 16.019201] i915 :00:02.0: registered panic notifier
| [ 16.024728] usb 3-1: USB disconnect, device number 2
| [ 16.344378] ACPI Exception: AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT, Index (0x5) is
beyond end of object (length 0x5) (20131115/exoparg2-420)
| [ 16.344388] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.GFX0._DOD] (Node 8800b9a622f8), AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT
(20131115/psparse-536)
| [ 16.344399] ACPI Exception: AE_AML_PACKAGE_LIMIT, Evaluating _DOD
(20131115/video-1246)
| [ 16.500280] ACPI: Video Device [GFX0] (multi-head: yes rom: no post: no)
| [ 16.502361] acpi device:04: registered as cooling_device7

This need not be of any consequence; just something I thought would be
interesting.

== Addtional information ==

1. Earlier, I had blacklisted all tpm* modules after I had discovered
that the tpm_tsi module was trying to access the TPM chip. The problem
has existed before as well as after this blacklisting. FYI, the
blacklist information is pasted below:

| # remove all tpm (trusted platform module) drivers
| # location: /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/char/tpm/*
| blacklist tpm_atmel
| blacklist tpm_i2c_atmel
| blacklist tpm_i2c_infineon
| blacklist tpm_i2c_nuvoton
| blacklist tpm_i2c_stm_st33
| blacklist tpm_infineon
| blacklist tpm_nsc
| blacklist xen-tpmfront

2. Here is the output of the relevant commands directly from my
terminal:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1312528] Re: GRUB boot menu does not appear

2014-04-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
JONNALAGADDA Srinivas, as per
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063lc=encc=usdlc=ensw_lang=product=521#N1570
an update to your BIOS is available (F.24). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it
doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313300] Re: [HP Compaq 6530b Notebook PC] Unable to hibernate with Ubuntu 14.04

2014-04-27 Thread Kunjesh Kaushik
Tested with 3.15.0-031500rc2-generic. Details available in below.
Bottomline --- bug still exists; I am unable to hibernate the device,
although suspend still works well.

# booted with no_console_suspend, switched to VT-1

sudo su
cd /sys/power
cat disk pm_test state

lsmod lsmod.output.txt
dmesg dmesg-output.txt

echo devices pm_test
echo platform disk
echo disk state
dmesg dmesg-devices-platform.txt

echo core pm_test
echo platform disk
echo disk state
dmesg dmesg-core-platform.txt

# ^^ the only messages were from pciehp not able to hot-add existing
devices

echo core pm_test
echo reboot disk
echo disk state
dmesg dmesg-core-reboot.txt

# ^^ pciehp still complained; no (machine) reboot happened
# just that the machine took a quick nap and woke up again
# but I guess, that is how the pm_test functionality works

echo none pm_test
echo shutdown disk
echo disk state

# ^^ machine powered down and did not come up after reboot

# logged into desktop after booting up

dmesg dmesg-after-reboot.txt
sudo pm-hibernate

# ^^ failed to resume after reboot yet again

dmesg dmesg-after-pm-hibernate.txt

Title:
USB keyboard unresponsive on fresh install

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Hi,

I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS onto a machine here.
During the installation (which is pre-seeded) and in the BIOS, my
  keyboard works flawlessly.

However, the moment I boot the machine up, I note the keyboard is not
operational. Naturally, I discover this *after* buggering up my
  networking settings.

The offending package is linux-image-3.13.0-24-generic version
  3.13.0-24.46.

At one point I noticed an irq 16: nobody cared error message. Due
to there being no network connectivity, I was unable to capture the
message displayed. The output from `dmesg` (see attachment dmesg.txt)
suggests it does see USB and the keyboard, but plugging the keyboard
into any of the available ports and pressing keys has no effect on the
  console.

The machine is a rack-mounted server, intended to run headless. The
motherboard is an Intel DQ77MK. No peripheral cards are installed.
