[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310762] Re: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.04 random freeze and lock up
Short update: 1. Removed (with -purge option) nvidia drivers (both nvidia-331 and nvidia-331-updated and nvidia-settings. 2. Rebooted. 3. Reinstalled nvidia-331 and nvidia-settings. 4. Rebooted (oh well). 5. Drivers work, settings work (all options are available). I'm currently working under nvidia (selected in PRIME settings) to test lock ups. Will update info tomorrow. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot of Nvidia X Server Settings" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1310762/+attachment/4101303/+files/screen_2.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310762 Title: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.04 random freeze and lock up Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Just upgraded to 14.04 and started to experience random freezes. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1314368] Re: HP Pavilion dv8t-1200 Freezing in Ubuntu 14.04 (NVIDIA GT216M [GeForce GT 230M]

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313504] Re: Nvidia-173 video driver package comes with incompatible nvidia-settings version
please try to reproduce the error by installing nvidia-settings from the ubuntu repositories and launching nvidia-settings from the terminal (then attach the output) ** Changed in: nvidia-settings (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to nvidia-settings in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1313504 Title: Nvidia-173 video driver package comes with incompatible nvidia- settings version Status in “nvidia-settings” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After activating nvidia-173 video driver present in Ubuntu repositories, Ubuntu installs a different version of 'nvidia-settings' which is incompatible with nvidia-173 video driver. Nvidia-settings for nvidia-173 video driver is supposed to be the same version with the video driver, namely 173.xx.xx version, but instead it is always some other version, either 'nvidia-settings-304' or nvidia-settings-331 version. I managed to find a solution to link nvidia-173 video driver to its original 'nvidia-settings' version after downloading a .deb package which includes 'nvidia-settings' version 173.14.39, the same version with the latest driver for nvidia-173 package in Ubuntu 14.04. Dowload link for the 32bit 'nvidia-settings' version 173.14.39 is here: http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-backports-contrib-i386/nvidia- settings-legacy-173xx_173.14.39-1~bpo70+1_i386.deb.html Dowload link for the 64bit 'nvidia-settings' version 173.14.39 is here: http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-backports-contrib-amd64/nvidia- settings-legacy-173xx_173.14.39-1~bpo70+1_amd64.deb.html To fix the problem, I simply removed the incompatible 'nvidia- settings' version 304 or 331 which also removed the screen-resolution- extra package. And next, I extracted and copied the new nvidia- settings files from the .deb archive to /usr/lib/nvidia-173, and also added a new entry in /usr/share/applications for the new 'nvidia- settings' version 173.14.39: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Exec=/usr/lib/nvidia-173/nvidia-settings Terminal=false Categories=HardwareSettings;System;Settings; Icon=/usr/share/icons/nvidia-settings-legacy-173xx.png Name=NVIDIA X Server Settings Comment=Configure NVIDIA X Server Settings It works as it is supposed to in Ubuntu 14.04 32bit, and it should also work for Ubuntu 13.10 or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit. Never tested this solution for a 64bit release of Ubuntu. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1229591] Re: 8086:0116 [Dell Inspiron 14z (N411z)] Display brightness keys don't generate evdev events after saucy upgrade
Thank you for your reply. I will test kernel 3.15 and revert with news (probably later on today). In the meantime and after reading various reported bugs, I came accross this one: http://www.aristofunnies.gr/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/photo-12.jpeg It regards dell xps13, but refers to the exact same GPU (id 8086:0116). As you will read, the same problem persists especially on kernels after the 3.8, and they way to fix the fn function of the brightness keys in newer kernels is to set from the BIOS the "Load Legacy Option Rom" to "Enabled". Unfortunately even if I have installed the lasted version of BIOS proposed by the DELL manufacturer (i.e. version A06), there is no option for legacy option. I am just throwing ideas. It may help you go towards the right direction for solving the bug. I will revert with news about the 3.15 kernel. In case you have any suggestions, please let me know. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1229591 Title: 8086:0116 [Dell Inspiron 14z (N411z)] Display brightness keys don't generate evdev events after saucy upgrade Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: On raring (and precise) the display brightness keys (fn+f4 and fn+f5) on my Dell Inspiron 14z turned the brightness up and down. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310823] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Ubuntu freezes when lid closed
It was actually not quiet and splash but uncommenting of GRUB_TERMINAL=console in /etc/default/grub allows me to somehow get a working display in xorg (maybe I should create another bug for this to be fixed?). So I also tried 3.15-rc3. It's marked for 'utopic', but I found that it's partially fixes the issue. Opening lid now just results in a display still turned off and keyboard not working, but the system is working and accessible through ssh. ** Tags removed: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.15-rc2 ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.15-rc3 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310823 Title: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Ubuntu freezes when lid closed Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310762] Re: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.04 random freeze and lock up
Dear Christopher, Thank you for pointing out outdated BIOS. I upgraded my BIOS to the latest version. sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date output is: L70 Ver. 01.07 01/10/2014 However, I can not tell more about lock ups because of problems with nvidia-settings - no options are showed when I open Nvidia X Serves Settings ( please see attached screenshot or link here - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4795668/Screen.jpg) It seems like nvidia driver is installed (331, tested) but problem with nvidia settings does not allow me to switch between nvidia/intel and test whether BIOS update helped or not. I didn't have lock ups while working on intel card. Also tried to install prime-indicator package to switch between cards, but it doesn't seem to work with latest updates in ubuntu 14.04 (tried to uninstall/reinstall - didn't help) - application doesn't load. I have the latest Ubuntu 14.04 updates installed (checked just before comment submission). Is there any other information I can provide to help with this issue? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend
Seems solution in #68 solved the problem for me. I installed 14.04 recently and suffered from this problem along with the other (often my Xubuntu failed to suspend/reboot/shutdown at all). So the following steps let me comepletely get rid of these problems: 1. turn off Light Locker 2. uncheck All Settings -> Power Manager -> Extended -> Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate 3. reboot After all it looks to me like all the problems have the same roots related to Light Locker and screwed permissions. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1286552 Title: No wifi after suspend Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After suspending ubuntu the wifi doesn't work. After upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04 my PC started to freeze completely (no response from anything, requires hard reboot) if I'm closing the lid or display turning off due to inactivity timeout. I also had this problem after wake from suspend, but recently got kernel update and looks like it was fixed (no freezes after wake up). I tried fresh install of 14.04 that I'm using right now, but it doesn't help. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313221] Re: modprobe wl crashes with broadcom 4306
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users. ** Changed in: bcmwl (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bcmwl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1313221 Title: modprobe wl crashes with broadcom 4306 Status in “bcmwl” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I was installing Xubuntu 14.04. It said 'Configuring bcmwl-kernel- source (amd64)' and in the details "DKMS: install completed." and it just froze there. To continue installation I had to open up a terminal and execute 'sudo killall -9 modprobe' After getting it installed, I found out that the 'wl' module causes problems with my broadcom 4306 wireless card. I had to add it to the module blacklist. When I load the 'b43' module first (which is the correct module for my card), it loads fine [dmesg-b43-first.txt, 134-136]. Then when I try to load the 'wl' module after that, it seems to fail gracefully [dmesg-b43-first.txt, 203-end]. This seems normal to me. However, when I load the 'wl' module first, I get a stack trace [dmesg-wl-first.txt, 62-end]. I cannot unload it after that as it says it's in use. If I try to load 'b43' after that, modprobe just freezes (which I assume is what happened during installation). The system also freezes during reboot and I need to hard reboot my system. Two issues here it seems: 1. The wrong module is being automatically loaded for my card. It should be 'b43' not 'wl'. 2. More importantly, 'wl' is causing a stack trace and causing the modprobe process to lock up when loading 'b43'. Please let me know if you need any more information and thank you for the assistance. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1313221] Re: modprobe wl crashes with broadcom 4306
Same here! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to bcmwl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1313221 Title: modprobe wl crashes with broadcom 4306 Status in “bcmwl” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I was installing Xubuntu 14.04. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1310823] Re: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Ubuntu freezes when lid closed
Christopher, I just tried 3.15 rc1 and rc2 as well as 3.14.0-997 and looks like these kernels require some xorg upgrade since I got a blank screen as soon as xorg starts (and actually some green line artifacts while booting as well). OS is working, but display just turns off so I wasn't able to test anything. I also tried 3.13.11-031311. This one starts well, but lid opening still results in a complete freeze. Maybe some directions of how to fix 3.15 series? (I had no errors during installation except my wifi card driver wasn't able to compile). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1310823 Title: [Dell Inspiron 1525] Ubuntu freezes when lid closed Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi. Naturally, I discover this *after* buggering up my - networking settings. + keyboard works flawlessly. However, the moment I boot the machine up, I + note the keyboard is not operational. Naturally, I discover this + *after* buggering up my networking settings. The offending package is linux-image-3.13.0-24-generic version 3.13.0-24.46. At one point I noticed an "irq 16: nobody cared" error message. Due to there being no network connectivity, I was unable to capture the message displayed. The output from `dmesg` (see attachment dmesg.txt) suggests it does see USB and the keyboard, but plugging the keyboard into any of the available ports and pressing keys has no effect on the console. The machine is a rack-mounted server, intended to run headless. The motherboard is an Intel DQ77MK. [Kernel-packages] Odp: [Bug 1314263] Re: Backlight control does not work, but there are entries in /sys/class/backlight.
Christopher, I have only tested video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 because it was the first one and it actually worked nearly flawlessly (the only flaw was that I can lower brightness down till it turns off backlight completely). the hotkeys worked and I haven't noticed any lag when changing brightness. If you want I can check other workarounds if it is necessary. Best regards, Krzysztof Dnia Środa, 30 Kwietnia 2014 06:59 Christopher M.
