Title:
8086:08b1 (rev 6b) [Dell XPS 13 9333] iwlwifi regularly loses
  connection/becomes unusable on Intel 7260

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My Intel 7260 network card regularly shows very poor performance
and/or loses its connection entirely. On several occasions I have been
unable to reestablish an association with the AP without rebooting.
This occurs even if the laptop is within a few feet of the AP. I did
not have this problem on 12.04 with a quantal backport kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1203565] Re: 045e:009c [H87-PRO] Microsoft Keyboard Elite for Bluetooth dead keys problem

Title:
045e:009c [H87-PRO] Microsoft Keyboard Elite for Bluetooth dead keys
  problem

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
In Precise with 4.60 version of bluez I can pair my keyboard and mouse
  perfectly.

=== The problem is that dead keys of my keyboard (I mean -L or R-
CTRL, ALT, SUPER, -L or R- SHIFT, ALT-GR) doesn't work with my current
motherboard (whether application I opened, console included). It does
work correctly with other motherboards. The new motherboard is an 1150
  Haswell one from Asus.

What I can say is :
1/ When booting, my BIOS recognize perfectly the dead keys of my keyboard,
meaning that the bluetooth dongle or the motherboard is not directly concerned.
2/ When doing a second installation of Ubuntu, same problem.
3/ When trying the option 'keyboard layout' (whatever layout I choose), I
don't see those dead keys flashing, meaning the system doesn't react at all
when pressing them.
4/ By chance, I found another keyboard (same model, same brand), same
problem, meaning the keyboard is not concerned (it works on the older
motherboard, then it was poor chance that the keyboard broked just before
reinstalling).
5/ Tried the setxkbmap command (with sudo or without), nothing's better
6/ Tried the xmodmap command, I see the 0x codes for Left SHIFT, all dead
keys are there (see attachment)
7/ Normal keyboard (no wireless) works perfectly
8/ Put the dongle on an other usb slot doesn't change anything
9/ Command xev doesn't makes changes when pressing dead keys.

For me it's clearly a Ubuntu's system bug, with my motherboard (Asus
  H87-PRO socket 1150).

Arthur Hrast Essenfelder, as this would seem to not be a linux kernel

kernel and the problem was not reproducible), I'm placing into the

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Max Spicer, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 3.13 to
3.16 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed
immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited
analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? Please note,
finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
[Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10. My whole disk is encrypted
with luks and since the upgrade I have found I can no longer unlock my
disk at boot. The enter password screen appears, but typing does not
cause any characters to appear in the password box. However, if I hit
ctrl-alt f7 (not sure of the precise function key) I get a black
screen with a flashing white cursor and I can see the password that I
entered. This would seem to imply that this is not a problem with the
usb drivers, as has been reported in other similar bugs. It's as if
the focus is simply in the wrong place at the time when I need to
enter my password. Entering the password anyway and pressing enter has
  no effect.

By using Grub to select the previous kernel, I can then decrypt my disk and
use the system as normal. The working kernel version is 3.13.0-39-generic. The
problematic kernel is 3.16.0-24-generic.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391013] Re: [Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3] Wireless hardlocked

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Bryan, just to clarify, is this an issue with suspend or hibernate?

As well, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via 3.19-rc1
and advise to the results?

  Description: Ubuntu 14.10
  Release: 14.10

I was using the computer on batteries this morning and I opened the screen to
wake the system so that I could power up a cell phone via the usb port. I
never logged into the desktop, when I was done I unplugged the phone and closed
the computer to put it back to sleep. The next time I opened the computer both
the wireless and the bluetooth were down, the led on the computer for the
wireless is off even though the physical sitch is on. I upgraded to 14.10 from
14.04 this morning hoping it may resolve this problem.

I am aware this is a common problem.

RK, do any of the WORKAROUNDs mentioned in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight let you adjust the
backlight with your keyboard (for now, don't worry about attaching the
debugging information mentioned in the article).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405489] Re: [HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation] Ubuntu 14.10 random freeze and lock up with NVIDIA

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Anonymous Linux User, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. As per
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5428369&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4060
an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (1.30). If
you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does
it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what
happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1189721] Re: Ralink RT3290 doesn't have a bluetooth driver

2014-12-24 Thread Robin
Ravi,

intriguingly, those systems are certified for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, not for
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. My recollection is that the driver from the
manufacturer was specifically directed at 12.04 (or it may have been a
corresponding kernel version). The kernel has changed sufficiently from
12.04 to 14.04 for the driver no longer to be effective, as one
understands it. Had the manufacturer updated the driver, or someone else
taken over maintenance (with or without manufacturer's sponsorship),
then this frustrating problem would not have arisen.

Cheers,

Robin

PS: It wasn't really necessary to quote all the certified machines (36

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1189721] Re: Ralink RT3290 doesn't have a bluetooth driver

2014-12-24 Thread Robin
Ravi,

intriguingly, those systems are certified for Ubuntu *12.04 LTS*, *not*
for Ubuntu *14.04 LTS*.

Cheers,

Robin

PS: It wasn't really necessary to quote all the certified machines (36
in total) in glorious detail!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1166442] Re: Elantech clickpad/touchpad lacks multitouch features.

2014-12-24 Thread Trent Robbins
Fix #137 worked for me when combined with the modification/bugfix in
#161:

Linux patterntop 3.13.0-43-generic #72-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 8 19:35:06 UTC
2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Lenovo Z50-70
aka Lenovo Z50 70

HOWEVER - this broke my right click exactly as described in #161. I
opted to keep the broken right touch pad because the double tap seems to
bring up the right click menu.

After thinking about it, I implemented the fix in the #161 link to the
tar.gz file provided in #137.

This is verified working! Thanks everyone and #161 I hope you either
figured this out or see this.

Newer versions of the Elantech multitouch trackpad are not fully
supported in Linux. These appear in many of the newer Samsung
laptops, for example. elantech.c in the kernel needs to be updated to
support these models (up to v7 perhaps?)

This bug is confirmed to affect a range of samsung laptops running
Ubuntu 12.04 and newer, ArchLinux, Fedora and also affects the current
  (3.9) upstream kernel.

A dkms package was produced in 2011 (see
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/681904/comments/64) which may fix certain older laptops
affected by this issue, but doesn't fix newer models.

  == Original Report ==

  Hello,

So far I've been having a problem with my Elantech multitouch trackpad in
Linux. Basically all i get is right click, left click, and tap to click, along
with basic movement. The problem seems to be rooted in improper detection of
the trackpad, likely b/c its a new revision or whatnot. Of note is that working
elantech trackpads of the past in forums i scouted through show up as "ETPS/2
Elantech Touchpad". Mine just shows up in xinput as "PS/2 Elantech Touchpad". I
think this might be a simple fix in the end, just improper detection, I hope.
For reference, I've tried kernel 3.5 on Ubuntu 12.10 and kernel 3.8.0-17 on
Ubuntu 13.04 thus far, with all combinations of psmouse.

Kernels used: 3.5 signed (Ubuntu 12.10 default), 3.8.0-16, 3.8.0-17 signed
Other tests: Attempted using psmouse-elantech-v6, psmouse-alps, and
psmouse-alps-dst. No improvements so removed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1392016] Re: [Asus UL30VT] Backlight control does not work

2014-12-24 Thread RK
I have now tested the very latest kernel, version 3.19 rc 1 (from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.19-rc1-vivid/), and
backlight control still does not work.

The indicator does pop up and indicates increase and decrease in the
correct way, but the actual backlight level on the laptop screen does
not change.

Furthermore, the function key to turn off the touchpad does not work,
and doesn't even show an indicator bubble.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405074] Re: Low wifi signal level

2014-12-24 Thread n0dwis
Problem solved by build module wl.ko from sources from broadcom site
(http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php). I just manually
replace old module wl.ko to new.

2014-12-24 Thread arty
Christopher, your link redirects now to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds and this page has a lot of
things, so I'm not really certain which kernels to test. Do you mean the
ones from here http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405437] Re: [Dell Precision M4800] iwlwifi regularly loses connection on Intel 7260

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
arty, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from
the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are
irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly
shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.19-rc1

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

Yes, the firmware is the latest version. I cannot rely on its quality
though, i.e. its web-interface now uses an expired HTTPS certificate.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1372143] Re: [Asus X551MA] Brightness+fn hotkeys have no effect

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
danieru, as per
http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X551MA/HelpDesk_Download/ an update
to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (513). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change
anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and
provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405437] Re: [Dell M4800, A11 BIOS]: iwlwifi regularly loses connection on Intel 7260

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
arty, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could
you please advise if the firmware of your router is the latest Version
(1.01.009) as per
http://hilfe.telekom.de/hsp/cms/content/HSP/de/3388/FAQ/theme-293811306/Speedport-W
-723V-Typ-A ?

If not, could you please update it to it, and advise if this changes
anything?

** Description changed:

- My problem seems to be different from #1315221 because it exists in
- 3.16.0-28-generic (Ubuntu 14.10). It is also different from #1405298
- because it happens with the latest BIOS upgrade. dmidecode returns
- version A11 and date 12/03/2014
-
About every 10 minutes my WiFi disconnects and a line like this appears in
syslog:
  Dec 24 11:31:31 work kernel: [ 2721.017478] wlan0: deauthenticated from
10:c6:1f:2c:49:56 (Reason: 7=CLASS3_FRAME_FROM_NONASSOC_STA)

It is accompanied later by such line:
  Dec 24 11:31:46 work NetworkManager[902]: (wlan0): device state
change: activated -> failed (reason 'SSID not found') [100 120 53]

The network disappears from the list and only becomes visible after I
disable and re-enable networking via the network applet.

I don't remember seeing this problem at work where they use Cisco
routers. I see the problem at home with my Speedport 723V Typ A router
(a+b+n mode, WPA2). This may be affected by number of other wifi
networks which are visible here: at least 17 at the moment.

Title:
[Dell M4800, A11 BIOS]: iwlwifi regularly loses connection on Intel
  7260

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
My problem seems to be different from #1315221 because it exists in
3.16.0-28-generic (Ubuntu 14.10). It is also different from #1405298
because it happens with the latest BIOS upgrade. dmidecode returns
  version A11 and date 12/03/2014

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1402331] Re: System will periodically lockup with [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... render ring idle

2014-12-24 Thread chris pollock
It seems that this has been fixed by updating to a newer kernel. It's
been over five days without any issues.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have noticed the lockups periodically since 09/13/2014. I can't
remember what kernel version was in use then possibly kernel
3.13.0-35-generic or -36. It has continued periodically through
versions -39; -40 and now to -43. The last time this has happened was
  today Dec 13 14:40:57 localhost kernel: [154858.820009]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... render
ring idle. At times when it locks up I will have a cursor on a black
screen and will have to press the power button to restart other times
it will lockup whenever I'm in an application such as Firefox or
Evolution. At that time I can usually CTRL>ALT-F1 log in and run 'sudo
reboot' to restart the system. The release information requested is:

  chris@localhost:~$ lsb_release -rd

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The copy_{to,from}_user implementations in the Ubuntu kernel are suboptimal.
Optimized implementations have been submitted upstream and have shown a
significant improvement in network performance.

  [Test Case]
Generate traffic from one node to another using iperf.

  [Regression Risk]
These functions are obviously used heavily throughout the kernel, so a defect
here could have significant impact. This risk is mitigated by using an
implementation heavily based on the linaro string libraries (which are used in
other places already, e.g. glibc), and through active testing of this patch on
real hardware using a trusty-kernel base. The new patch will also undergo
regression testing to ensure the memory corruption issue of the previous patch
does not exist.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1405298] Re: [Dell M4800]: iwlwifi regularly loses connection on Intel 7260

2014-12-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
arty, happy holidays, and I'm glad a BIOS update worked out for you.
It's a common phenomenon here on Launchpad that many folks have all
sorts of wonky hardware problems (myself included), and could have saved
themselves going through the hassle of filing a bug report, or time
consuming testing, before checking to see if a simple BIOS update
addresses their issue.

However, as a BIOS update doesn't fit the criteria of the Fix Released
Status as outlined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status (as a release
from Ubuntu didn't fix this issue) I'll go ahead and mark this Invalid.
However, if the problem returns, please file a new report (not reopen
this one).

Thank you for your understanding, and please feel free to report any
future bugs you may find.

doesn't change all the time. Thank you for the idea, Christopher!
