[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1349740] Re: acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC failed (AE_ERROR); disabling ASPM

2015-10-09 Thread Colin Ian King
So, just to add some more clarification, this is not a kernel bug, but a
"feature" in your BIOS firmware and hence can't be fixed. The above
notes do explain how to workaround this, but beware that it may not be a
viable fix for your machine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1349740] Re: acpi PNP0A08:00: _OSC failed (AE_ERROR); disabling ASPM

2015-10-09 Thread Colin Ian King
This error message occurs when the kernel runs the root PCI bridge _OSC
control method in your firmware and the execution fails, perhaps due to
a bug in the firmware or perhaps it does not exist. The kernel hence
cannot determine the features supported or capabilities provided by the
device (as specified by your firmware) and hence has to disable PCIe
ASPM (Active State Power Management).

The downside of Active State Power Management not being enabled is that
the machine is less power efficient, however, one can force this on with
the kernel boot parameter "pcie_aspm=force" however, forcing this on may
cause system lockups.

Bug description:
  Problem Description

perf probe does not work properly on ppc64le

  ---uname output---
  Linux ubuntu1504 3.19.0-22-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 16 17:15:17 UTC
2015 ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux

  Machine Type = POWER

  Steps to Reproduce

'perf probe do_fork' adds the probe, but is not able to capture events on
'perf record -e probe:do_fork -a'. This is because ppc64le ABIv2 uses local
entry points at an offset from the global entry point where the probe is
currently being placed.

These issues have been fixed upstream with the below patch series:
  - http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1941352

  == Comment: #1 - Naveen N. Rao  - 2015-07-01
07:03:19 ==
I have backported the patches relevant for ppc64le and I am attaching them
here. These fixes are needed for 15.04, 14.04.03 and 15.10 (depending on the
kernel it gets based on). For reference, upstream commits in -tip for reference:
  - d4c537e6bf860c12262cb936eef663180d7a3d45: perf probe: Ignore tail calls to
probed functions
  - 3099c026002e97b8c173d9d0bbdfc39257d14402: perf probe: Improve detection of
file/function name in the probe pattern
  - 7b6ff0bdbf4f7f429c2116cca92a6d171217449e: perf probe ppc64le: Fixup
function entry if using kallsyms lookup
  - d5c2e2c17ae1d630ddbceb53a264f24cc99703a4: perf probe ppc64le: Prefer symbol

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503640] Re: Asus Laptop X450JB Can't enable Wifi

2015-10-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andy Librian, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from
the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for
testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions
are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1503568] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffebe000000000

2015-10-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jack Byles, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
As per http://www.asus.com/Tower-PCs/Essentio_CM1630/HelpDesk_Download/
an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available
(0801). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the
information above is provided, then please mark this report Status
Confirmed. Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1500751] Re: Cryptsetup Keyboard not working on Xubuntu 3.19.0-30

2015-10-09 Thread Fredrik Jonson
I've tested linux-image-3.19.0-29-generic version
3.19.0-29.31~lp1500751Commit0ed67cf1 and it has the bug too.

Title:
Cryptsetup Keyboard not working on Xubuntu 3.19.0-30

Status in cryptsetup package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
I am running Xubuntu 15.04 and just upgraded to the latest kernel (3.19.0-30).
After upgrading the boot time is longer (what is negligible) but the more
severe error is, that I cannot enter my passphrase when I see the crypt dialog.
I just see the dialog to enter my passphrase, but when I try to enter it,
nothing appears in the textfield. I tried with the builtin laptop keyboard but
also with an external USB keyboard.

I thought about supplying more information, but things like the syslog
are not helping apparently (I was not able to boot until the syslog
would capture information...). If you need anything I can provide, I
  gladly help.

  [Test case]
  1. On an affected system boot into kernel 3.19.0-30

  [Solution]
The "solution" for now is booting the older Kernel 3.19.0-28 (which isn't a
real solution).

PS.: Bugs like the following are either not applicable or the solution is not
working for me:

Bug description:
During every boot sequence, SMART commands are sent to this SSD,
causing a minute long hang, until a kernel error message appears,
telling me that some SMART command failed. Since SSDs are not the

When I tried to disable SMART for this disk, I got the following error

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1263257] [NEW] "Disks" formatted mounted disk ext4->NTFS without unmount, resulting in kernel panic

2015-10-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

gnome-disk-utility "Disks", version 3.6.1-1ubuntu1

System in question:
   uname -a = 'Linux scorpio 3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17

Attempted to format partition in question (/dev/sdc2, /dev/sdb2 before
reboot) from ext4 to NTFS, failed to unmount partition beforehand.
Admittably a failure in proper user policy; but a frontend graphical
program like "Disks" should know better than to have actually tried to
preform said operation without doing an unmount first. Result was a
partition which read 16EB (exabyte) ext3/ext4 in caja shell properties
window. Attempt to unmount via caja shell resulted in kernel panic :(

Clearly this is a very serious issue; anybody working on disk partioning
could potentially make this mistake. Terminal format utilites would
actually complain about mounted partitions-- the fact the "Disks" was
able to format an in-use, mounted partition is very worrying.

  Tried to ignore "#include linux/netfilter.h" in src/ip/Intercept.cc:99
to no avail as build fails later on due to missing "SO_ORIGINAL_DST"
in Intercept.cc. Removing arpa and netinet header inclusions also lead
to eventual build failures due to missing symbols.

So far I have found no way to have squid linking solely to either the
kernel or libc without disabling netfilter altogether.
