[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1541245] [NEW] Missing and loose of ethernet e1000 driver in Ubuntu 14.04

2016-12-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I made a fresh install of 14.04 on a Dell XPS-8900 there is about two or three
month.
The driver was missing, and I have installed manually a driver. It has worked,
but with an ennoying problem.

Each time a new Linux version is updated and then the computer is
reboot, driver is lost and must install again.

As it's not my computer, but the one of a friend which doesn't know
about computers, I had to go and reinstall and reboot the machine. I
have made a script which allows the user to do that, but it's really a
pain ...

Is there a way to avoid such things ?

Thanks
A+

with increasing delays until it fails. At which point a simple
ipconfig -t dhcp -d "ens2f0" works. The console output is slightly
garbled but should give you an idea:

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host. When the ipconfig command is
issued manually, an identical dhcp request and response happens, only this time
it is accepted. It doesn't appear to be that the messages are being sent and
received incorrectly, just silently ignored by ipconfig.

I was seeing this behaviour earlier this year, which I was able to fix
by specifying "ip=dhcp" as a kernel parameter. About a month ago that
was identified as causing us other problems (long story) and we
dropped it, at which point we discovered the original bug was no
  longer an issue.

Putting "ip=dhcp" back on with this kernel no longer fixes the
  problem.

I've compared the two initrds and effectively the only thing that has
changed between the two is the kernel components.

I'm going to try and track back through kernel versions to see if I
can find which version the fix happened in to maybe provide some
additional context. I'll also attach copies of the initrds, packet
  captures etc.

What was the first question?

You advised in

the root cause is resolved in 17.04.

Despite this, could you please advise to my question from

This only started happening when Yakkety went to the 4.8 branch, with 4.7

hardware failure will only stick to one OS and one branch of the kernel for
that OS. (these USB ports don't randomly die on Windows or BSD, I've tested
that in the past couple of days)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Graydon, if the bug is reproducible at any interval, then perhaps a
standard bisect between:
linux-image-4.4.0-53-generic - Fine
linux-image-4.4.0-57-generic - Affected

would be more appropriate to understand which commit introduced the
regression.

Title:
initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Between kernel versions 4.4.0-53 and 4.4.0-57 a bug has been
(re?)introduced that is breaking dhcp booting in the initrd
environment. This is stopping instances that use iscsi storage from
  being able to connect.

  Over serial console it outputs:

IP-Config: no response after 2 secs - giving up
  IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
  IP-Config: ens2f1 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:39 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
IP-Config: no response after 3 secs - giving up

with increasing delays until it fails. At which point a simple
ipconfig -t dhcp -d "ens2f0" works. The console output is slightly
garbled but should give you an idea:

  (initramfs) ipconfig -t dhcp -[ 728.379793] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0:
changing MTU from 1500 to 9000
  d "ens2f0"
  IP-Config: ens2f0 hardware address 90:e2:ba:d1:36:38 mtu 1500 DHCP RARP
  IP-Config: ens2f0 guessed broadcast address 10.0.1.255
  IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254):

   rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath:
   filename : /ipxe.efi

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host.

System hangs during boot with 4.4.0-45-generic if /etc/crypptab

  There are two workarounds:
  1) Comment out line referring the encrypted partition in /etc/crypttab and
/etc/fstab. Mount the partition manually after boot completes
  2) Boot in 4.4.0-42-generic which works as do earlier versions. i.e. the user
provides passphrase at the prompt during boot and the system finishes booting

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Paul Graydon
I should clarify, I know for certain that 4.4.0-51 is stable and
reliable (and doesn't exhibit the bug). As part of our attempt to
verify everything was correct with the installation we had a system run
from Wednesday before Thanksgiving, all the way through to the following
Monday, during which time it had an rc.local triggered reboot (so it had
to be fully booted).

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Paul Graydon
Okay.. this is interesting. It seems like the Ubuntu dev version of
4.10 is actually intermittently failing (?!) I guess the next thing to
do here is keep rebooting on this version of the kernel and see how
often the bug occurs vs doesn't occur, so I can get a feel for a
reasonable number of times to reboot with each test kernel once I
actually start bisecting.

>From the dhcp server side I can't see anything different. The requests
look the same.

Title:
initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Between kernel versions 4.4.0-53 and 4.4.0-57 a bug has been
(re?)introduced that is breaking dhcp booting in the initrd
environment. This is stopping instances that use iscsi storage from
  being able to connect.

  Over serial console it outputs:

IP-Config: no response after 2 secs - giving up

ipconfig -t dhcp -d "ens2f0" works. The console output is slightly
garbled but should give you an idea:

Status in zfs-linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in zfs-linux source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released
Status in zfs-linux package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The zfs utilities scripts shipped with debian and ubuntu such as :

  * arc_summary.py : Provides a summary of the statistics
  * arcstat.py : Print out ZFS ARC Statistics exported via kstat(1)
  * dbufstat.py : Print out statistics for all cached dmu buffers

should be renamed according to Policy 10.4 :
  https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-scripts

"When scripts are installed into a directory in the system PATH, the
script name should not include an extension such as .sh or .pl that
denotes the scripting language currently used to implement it."

Ideally, this should be fixed and upstreamed to Debian (or to zfslinux
  upstream) as well.

  [Test Case]

   * Install zfsutils-linux
   * List files

   $ dpkg -L zfsutils-linux | egrep "arc|dbufstat"
     /usr/sbin/arc_summary.py
     /usr/sbin/arcstat.py
     /usr/sbin/dbufstat.py

  [Regression Potential]

   * none expected, this is a trivial change that simply rename the
scripts to remove the extension (.py) with a simple 'mv' before the
dh_install invocation in order to get this expected result :

  $ dpkg -L zfsutils-linux | egrep -i "arc|dbuf"
    /usr/sbin/arc_summary
    /usr/sbin/arcstat
    /usr/sbin/dbufstat

Yakkety include the renaming as shown above.

Xenial will have a symlink to not break user experience until next release
upgrade:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/xenial/+source/zfs-linux/+bug/1628279/comments/19

So user will be able to use both for instance : arcstat.py or arcstat

  [SRU JUSTIFICATION]

  [Impact]

It has been brought to my attention that Ubuntu kernel 4.4 has a
severe netfilter regression affecting the performance of
"/sbin/iptables" command, especially when adding large number of
policies. My source have documented everything here[2].

Note that the situation can also be reproduce with latest and greatest
  upstream kernel v4.9-rc4.

I was able to reproduce the situation on my side, and a kernel bisect
identified the same offending commit[1] as my source found for this
  bug.

Running the commit right before the offending one have proven to have
  expected performance :

  # commit [71ae0dff] <== Offending commit
  real 0m33.314s
  user 0m1.520s
  sys 0m26.192s

  # commit [d7b59742] <== Right before offending commit
  real 0m5.952s
  user 0m0.124s
  sys 0m0.220s

  [Test Case]

  * Reproducer #1
  $ iptables -F
  $ time (./list-addrs 3000 | xargs -n1 iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -s)

  * Reproducer #2
  $ iptables -F
  $ time for f in `seq 1 3000` ; do iptables -A FORWARD ; done

"list-addrs" script can be found here[3]

  [Regression Potential]

   * none expected, the patches have been proven to work on mainline
kernel, and was reviewed by a few netfilters maintainer + tested by
  myself.

  [Other Info]

  * "iptables-restore" doesn't suffer of that netfilter regression, and
I'm also aware that "iptables-restore" is the favourite approach since
it is way more efficient than iptables that is executed over and over,
once for each policy one want to set, but since "binary
arp/ip/ip6tables" takes vastly longer to perform with that commit, I
think this need to be address anyway.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1592201] Re: Webcam does not work on Surface Pro 4

2016-12-27 Thread Ben
Someone on Debian has apparently found some drivers for the camera
hardware from Android- it is to be seen as of yet, however, if these
drivers work. Heres a link to their work on the MSSP4:
https://github.com/jimdigriz/debian-mssp4

If anyone could walk me through the steps of compiling them, I could
probably test them out- I'm currently on Arch with kernel 4.10, though I
can set up a dualboot with Ubuntu if needed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1649905] Re: On boot excessive number of kworker threads are running

2016-12-27 Thread Doug Smythies
I tested kernel 4.10-rc1, and the issue is solved with it.

I'm not sure how to test the yakkety proposed kernel, because the
instructions seems to be for a desktop computer, and this issue shows up
much much more clearly on my server computers.

On boot excessive number of kworker threads are running

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Status in linux source package in Yakkety:

Bug description:
  [SRU REQUEST, Yakkety]

Ubuntu Yakkety 4.8 kernels have an excessive amount of kworker threads
running, this is especially noticeable on boot, one can easily have >
1000 kworker threads on a 4 CPU box.

  Bisected this down to:

  commit 81ae6d03952c1bfb96e1a716809bd65e7cd14360
  Author: Vladimir Davydov
  Date: Thu May 19 17:10:34 2016 -0700

  mm/slub.c: replace kick_all_cpus_sync() with synchronize_sched() in
  kmem_cache_shrink()

  [FIX]

The synchronize_sched calls seem to create all these excessive kworker
threads. This is fixed with upstream commit:

  commit 89e364db71fb5e7fc8d93228152abfa67daf35fa
  Author: Vladimir Davydov
  Date: Mon Dec 12 16:41:32 2016 -0800

slub: move synchronize_sched out of slab_mutex on shrink

synchronize_sched() is a heavy operation and calling it per each cache
owned by a memory cgroup being destroyed may take quite some time. What
is worse, it's currently called under the slab_mutex, stalling all works
  doing cache creation/destruction.

Actually, there isn't much point in calling synchronize_sched() for each
cache - it's enough to call it just once - after setting cpu_partial for
all caches and before shrinking them. This way, we can also move it out
of the slab_mutex, which we have to hold for iterating over the slab
  cache list.

  [TEST CASE]

Without the fix, boot a Yakkety and count the number of kthreads:

ps -ef | grep kworker | wc -l
  1034

With the fix, boot count the number kthreads and it will be
  dramatically less:

ps -ef | grep kworker | wc -l
  32

Since this touches the slub allocator and cgroups too, I have
regression tested this against the kernel-team autotest regression
tests to sanity check this fix. All seems OK.

Note: this only affects kernels from 4.7-rc1 through to 4.8

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Graydon, to advise, I have updated the article to move the
mainline-build-one section out of the way, as it has been distracting
here, and for other folks. Feel free to ignore it, as it is for those
who build kernels all the time (i.e. N/A here). Also, I don't maintain
it, so I won't be able to advise on using it.

Title:
initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

  IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254):
   addres[ 728.980448] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: detected SFP+: 3

   gateway: 10.0.1.1 [ 729.148410] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: NIC Link is Up

dns0 : 169.254.169.254 dns1 : 0.0.0.0
   rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath:
   filename : /ipxe.efi

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host.

Title:
initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

  IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254):
   addres[ 728.980448] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: detected SFP+: 3
  s: 10.0.1.56broadcast: 10.0.1.255 netmask: 255.255.255.0
   gateway: 10.0.1.1 [ 729.148410] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: NIC Link is Up
10 Gbps, Flow Control: RX/TX
dns0 : 169.254.169.254 dns1 : 0.0.0.0
   rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath:
   filename : /ipxe.efi

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Paul Graydon
Ahh, I see where the kteam tools stuff is supposed to come from.

It's not clear if I'm supposed to go down that route and use the
mainline-build-one script or not when trying to build the kernel in this
case. If I use the mainline-build-one tool:

$ mainline-build-one afd2ff9b7e1b367172f18ba7f693dfb62bdcb2dc xenial
*** BUILDING: commit:afd2ff9b7e1b367172f18ba7f693dfb62bdcb2dc series:xenial

fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

and the repository exists.
error: pathspec 'xenial/master' did not match any file(s) known to git.
error: Cannot delete the branch 'BUILD.040400' which you are currently on.
fatal: A branch named 'BUILD.040400' already exists.

The only way this tool works with that syntax is to switch to the master
branch, and run it from there. I'm not sure how that's supposed to work with
git bisect, given bisect is setting your checked out position.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1652348] Re: initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

2016-12-27 Thread Paul Graydon
I'll get started on it. This might take a while to do.

A couple of quick observations:

1) we haven't validated that mainline 4.4.0 actually works. I only know
certain Ubuntu versions of the 4.4.0 kernel work. Given how much seems
to be changing between Ubuntu releases of it, that seems a risky
assumption to make. I'll start by proving that first.

2) On the wiki you linked to: "To do this, you can use the mainline-
build-one script which can be found at ~kteam-tools/malinline-build
/maineline-build-one ." A proper link would be useful. Where is
~kteam-tools?

Title:
initrd dhcp fails / ignores valid response

  IP-Config: ens2f0 complete (dhcp from 169.254.169.254):
   addres[ 728.980448] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: detected SFP+: 3
  s: 10.0.1.56broadcast: 10.0.1.255 netmask: 255.255.255.0
   gateway: 10.0.1.1 [ 729.148410] ixgbe :13:00.0 ens2f0: NIC Link is Up
10 Gbps, Flow Control: RX/TX
dns0 : 169.254.169.254 dns1 : 0.0.0.0
   rootserver: 169.254.169.254 rootpath:
   filename : /ipxe.efi

tcpdumps show that dhcp requests are being received from the host, and
responses sent, but not accepted by the host.
