I use wicd to let it connect to my WiFi with a RTL8188CUS USB dongle. And there's a RTL2838 DVB-T USB stick attached to monitor airplane positions for Flightradar24. After updateing the kernel from 4.8.0-1024, which runs flawlessly, to -1025, there's a kernel panic happening 10-20 seconds after booting up to the login prompt. I thought the -1026 fixed that, but it's still no worky. The trace is scrolling so fast I can't read anything but the last page: [<808c76c8>] (sock_sendmsg) from... Unlike #1655842, also seeing the same oom-killer on multiple servers updated to 4.8.0-34. First upgraded them all 4.8 servers 4.8.0-36, then downgraded a few to 4.4.0-63. I am seeing an even more pronounced change in the memory usage, so I can only assume that 4.4.0-63 is also bugged with the same problem as 4.4.0-59 and 4.8.0-34. Either because #1655842 is not fixed, or it is only fixed for certain kinds of workloads. These are the changes I'm seeing in our memory graphs between 4.4.0-59 and 4.4.0-63/4.8.0-34. The symptoms I'm seeing are: Upgrading 4.4.0-57 -> 4.4.0-59: - /proc/meminfo:Buffers: Up from 9GB to 15GB - /proc/meminfo:Cached: Up from 5GB to 10GB - /proc/meminfo:SReclaimable: Down from 15GB to 5GB - /proc/meminfo:SUnreclaim: Staying at 50MB Upgrading 4.4.0-57 -> 4.4.0-63: - /proc/meminfo:Buffers: Up from 9GB to 26GB - /proc/meminfo:Cached: Down from 5GB to 300MB - /proc/meminfo:SReclaimable: Down from 15GB to 2GB - /proc/meminfo:SUnreclaim: Down from 50MB to 30MB Upgrading 4.4.0-57 -> 4.8.0-34: - /proc/meminfo:Buffers: Up from 9GB to 14GB - /proc/meminfo:Cached: Down from 5GB to 2GB - /proc/meminfo:SReclaimable: Down from 15GB to 14GB - /proc/meminfo:SUnreclaim: Staying at 50MB Setting vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 300 seems to have a positive effect of not causing OOMs. Downgrading to 4.4.0-57 also works. Will also note that I haven't had a definitive OOM in 4.4.0-63. But the shift in memory usage is far too much from what I expect to be normal on these particular servers where I'm experiencing crashes. The created dumpfile may be incomplete. The makedumpfile version on your machine is # makedumpfile -v makedumpfile: version 1.5.5 (released on 18 Dec 2013) I did a #sudo apt-get source makedumpfile and checked for the sources. In the makedumpfile.h , the LATEST_VERSION is set to #define OLDEST_VERSION KERNEL_VERSION(2, 6, 15)/* linux-2.6.15 */ #define LATEST_VERSION KERNEL_VERSION(4, 1, 0)/* linux-4.1.0 */ where as kernel version on the machine is # uname -r 4.2.0-27-generic Hence we see this mismatch and message as "The kernel version is not supported." [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1634449] Re: Black flicker when leaving monitor
This is likely a problem with the power saving mode in the kernel driver i915. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics I have created a file i915.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ contents of i915.conf: options i915 enable_rc6=0 then the problem has disappeared for me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1634449 Title: Black flicker when leaving monitor Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Sometimes, when moving cursor from one monitor to the other, the external monitor turns black and gets back on again. The hardware is Dell Latitude E5470 with Docking Station and monitor connected via DisplayPort (checked both ports and happens on both of them). Everything worked correctly on Ubuntu 16.04, but it happens on Ubuntu 16.10. Kernel 4.8.0-25-generic. The bug isn't related to cursor only, if focus changes by alt+tab it sometimes happens as well. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1553503 This is the same bug as this one, but closed. --- ApportVersion: 2.20.3-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: vessel 5602 F...m pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: vessel 5602 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: Unity DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.10 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=56fab9c8-7226-47b9-91cb-a2c865f81bc0 InstallationDate: Installed on 2016-08-31 (47 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS "Xenial Xerus" - Release amd64 (20160719) MachineType: Dell Inc.
